Honda Motor Co. plans to stop producing motorcycles in the United States next year and will transfer production to Japan, the automaker announced Wednesday.
Honda currently makes motorcycles at its plant in Marysville, Ohio, employing 450 workers.
Honda said there will be no layoffs when production ends in spring 2009. The workers will remain with the company, helping produce cars, trucks, engines and parts and filling other jobs at Honda's other operations in west-central Ohio, the company said.
The motorcycle plant opened in 1979 as Honda's first U.S. plant. Last year, it produced about 44,000 Gold Wing touring and VTX cruiser bikes.
Honda said motorcycle production at the Marysville plant and at the Hamamatsu factory in Japan will be consolidated at a new motorcycle plant in Kumamoto, Japan, in 2009. It is part of a global plan to produce certain larger motorcycles, Honda said.
"This move allows us to improve the competitiveness and appeal of our products by applying the latest technologies and production systems at one efficient location," said Akio Hamada, president and CEO of Honda of America.
Honda currently employs about 13,000 workers at five plants in Ohio - two in Marysville and one each in East Liberty, Anna and Russells Point. Besides motorcycles, the employees make the Accord, Civic, Element, CR-V, Acura TL and RDX sport utility vehicle

I'd swear this guy (in the picture) and his friends posted this on zx10r.net about a year ago after the ride.

If I remember correctly, he was faking it using a bottle of water.

Certainly looks like water.

Oh God...that's the quote of the year! LOL!!!

Ain't it the truth.

I've never understood the "haters" either. Ride what you like. I have a couple of friends who won't ride ANYTHING other than a Honda. I happen to find Hondas rather boring and sedate with no "soul", but that's just my opinion. Doesn't make my friends wrong for their choice.

Now that's technology!

Those other two bikes have to have oil changes. The Harley does it automatically. You just add in what it automatically drained out for you!

It's a feature folks! : )

The Harley "oil leaking" thing is about as old as the Japanese bike "20k mile throw-away" thing.

I was on the uly yesterday when a guy on a vulcan pulled up and started talking to me. I thought it was a fat boy at first glance. I asked if he was the guy at the gym on the fat boy, I had just left the gym and saw the fat boy parked behind my uly. He said "I can't pay that much for a bike to be in the shop all the time". I said whatever dude, I have a road king with 65K miles that has never seen the inside of a shop except to get new tires. People should ride what they like and give up the complex.

Not trying to slam HD, but I find extremely amusing that the riders with the biggest, roughest stick shoved firmly up their backsides on the road are the HD riders. Nearly every other flavor and genre of motorcyclist will wave back at me on the Uly(or my Kawi for that matter) except about 40% of the "other American motorcycle" riders. Pretty sad. I hope it's just an anomaly of late. I like to think we two wheeler pilots are different, but alas a large segment are cagers at heart with a display bike to go with the display house, display SUV and the look-at-me lifestyle.

Waving?

All this waving is a pain in the A$$ to be honest.

Who the hell invented this waving sh*t any way?

I have people waving at me across a five lane road, AND on the opposite lanes of freeways...no, no, no! Stop it!!

Now, of late, actually, I only wave if I am waved at first - so I have to be quick as hell on the draw.

Sometimes I even pretend like I'm gonna wave, then pull back, quick like ... god that's funny ('cause he was waiting for me to wave first).

And another thing, do you give them the open hand, the peace sign, the single digit point, the low open hand, like you're petting a dogs back... what??

This waving thing is driving me CRAZY!

Serenity, Now! Serenity, Now!

This waving thing is driving me CRAZY!

The whole lame practice started in the past as a 'No cops ahead' signal. Like you Johnboy I find it a real pain in the ass and chances are if you are gawping at the on-coming rider waiting for his wave and deciding if you should return it you just might not notice the kid about to run out in front of you. Just a thought.
