It's just something I've observed over the last couple of years of surfing the net.

You're out 'on the road' and you pull over for a drink/smoke,where do you put your helmet?
I reckon if you're American,Canadian or Australian you'll hang it on a foot peg,if you're a Brit you'll rest it on the saddle/tank or hang it on a mirror.
These aren't hard n fast rules of course but in general that's where it'll go.

Of course universally some folk put it on the ground, wet or dry with the lining getting dirty which then goes on your bonce(head).
This brings me to wonder why you'd put it on a foot peg and risk getting it covered in sh#t if you'd trodden in some.

I know, the closer it is to the ground, the less damaged it's gonna get if it falls,is it something they teach you at riding school?

Discuss.

The triple tail in the upright position is the best helmet holder for me .. or at least until I got a top case. Just slide the helmet over the top and there was never any fear of it coming off.
Now I put in over the right hand mirror with the bulk of weight sitting on the handlebar grip. I've never and any issues with it falling off or changing the mirror.. as long as I set it on there the right way. If it rains, the helmet will not collect water or other liquids like it would if it where hanging off the helmet holder.
For longer stops where I can't see the bike, I stow it in the top case.

No... For me it's just sheer laziness and like you said.. "closer it is to the ground, the less damaged it's gonna get if it falls;" there is less potential energy stored from that hight.

Plus, North America is cleaner than everywhere else (sarcasm).

If I'm doing a short stop an have no security worries, I turn my bars straight and put my gloves over the instrument cluster and helmet on the airbox cover. With the shield up it will slide forward nicely to where it cannot fall off.

Lately though, when there is no wind I just set it sideways on the up side of the back seat. I have all three bags on all of the time.

My usual placement is in the top box though.

I thoroughly sterilize the patch of ground blessed with my bonnet and set it on the ground.

The dusty bits are considerably more sterile than the funk growing inside the helmet.

Handlebars and mirrors compress the padding in odd places and risk sudden deceleration damage.

The seat WILL prompt the helmet to launch itself onto the ground.

The footpegs just seem an odd place to hang a helmet. Particularly the left side peg.

I guess I could always bring the helmet bag and hang it from the handlebars.

I have a Nolan helmet, and it has a wonderful latching system so it is very easy to latch the strap through the handguard and around the right side grip.

If I'm running without my backpack attached to the triple tail, I just slide it down over the upright tail and it is a safe and secure as anywhere

I used to hang mine on the mirror, until it fell off. Never thought of using a foot peg. Now that I have the Uly with a top box, I'm just keeping it in there.

Lovin' the answers guys, especially the cheeky/amusing ones.

My gloves go on the clocks and the helm goes on the airbox cover as Etennuly said,it's pretty secure there (as in not falling off).

I actually put mine in the helmet lock, and mine wife hangs hers over the sissy seat.

+ 1 on using the helmet lock. I'm rather attached to my lid.

I used to put it over the right mirror, until we had an especially high population of mosquitoes one summer. Now I use the right passenger peg-no one uses that as the wife has her own bike.

Either on the footpeg or over the mirror, unless I accidentally drop it while taking it off then it usually just rests where ever it stopped rolling when I accidentally dropped kicked it while trying to catch it before it hit the ground. I did this once in front of a Wal-Mart, think I ended up accidentally kicking it three or four times while running along trying to catch it, probably went a good 30' or more. The old TV show Laugh-In ain't got nothing on me.

I usually either take it with me or stow it in one of the cases.
I frequently get a chuckle from the skid-lid types who hang it up side down from the handlebars or footpeg. Especially just before it rains...

Like California I have a Nolan and thus I just clip it over the handgrip.

I set mine on the ground beside the bike, unless things are *really* awful, then it hangs from the right side foot peg.

Most of the time I just carry it around with me... it's a Schuberth C1, and thats a lot of coin to leave laying on the bike. Even if I locked it, it would not stop any punk with a knife from taking it to use as a toy or something.

My helmet NEVER leaves me. . . including flights.

A helmets structure is a "single impact" device. I want my bump to be it's first.

Picky . . . yeah, but we each have our quirks.

I set mine down on the ground on the low side next to my rear tire. That way the bike sort of leans over it to protect it from anything. I have a real thin rubber coated metal cable with a lock that I run through the chin bar to lock it to the foot peg if necessary.

Mainly like me - on the mirrors.

Blake,second picture down-your johnson looks kinda dented-lol.
Sorry mate,I didn't quite figure out where you put your helmet when you're not riding-nice yellow fairing above the headlight though!
Seriously,nice pics-diggin' the photographic answers.

DD,you're in NZ aintcha?
Where do they hang theirs?

"Nah - Not very many Australians do the footpeg thing." - My bad, must be an American thing eh?
I've never seen anyone in the UK do it,funny ain't it.

It's the UK Buell Enthusiast Group meeting this coming Sunday,I'll try and remember to take a few pics of 'Helmets at rest on and around motorcycles'lol.

It's spring good 'n' proper now over here and I reckon it's gonna be a pretty good turn-out 'cos people havn't been able to get much leisure riding in so far, there's a good buzz going on the UKBEG website about it-I can't wait.
I'll do a report when I get back from it.

To me putting it on the foot peg seems like the most out of the way location, with the potential for the least damage. However, the points you raised earlier about the hygiene factor do have merit for consideration. The next time I go wandering through a field of shite or ankle deep in Great Dismal Swamp water - I will assuredly recall this thread and join my Anglo brethren in the time honored tradition of placing one's helmet on high.

Long live the Queen!

Since my Firebolt has no locking feature and I'm a very distrusting soul, my helmet goes wherever I do.

I've thought many times about rigging a lock below the passenger pillion, but I'd bring my helmet cover to keep the sun off of it were I to do that...and consequently would probably just carry the damned thing anyway to avoid the hassle of bagging and hanging it!

...if I do end up with an XT this year I'll likely just plop the helmet in the top case. ; )

Darthane,

The XT is GREAT! I used to take my helmet with me EVERYWHERE, but now I just put it in the side bag of the XT (top case is usually full with work crap...) and now people wonder why I walk around with that nice motorcycle jacket but don't have a helmet with me. It has stopped all the questions when I go grocery shopping - 'Are you gonna fit all that on a motorcycle?!?!'

Heh...going grocery shopping on the bike would be a new one. I've made small trips for fresh foods (think veggies and milk), but never more than I could stuff in my Firebolt's tank bag.

I'll never forget going into a local party store on the way home one evening for a couple six-packs and not bothering to take my helmet off. I get up to the counter and begin to take it off so he can ID me and the guy behind it says, "Nah, don't bother...no one else would come in here and buy beer on a motorcycle."

I grocery shop with my Ulysses quite often - the bags can fit a weekend's worth of chow, as well as the results of a trip to the wine and spirits shop. People do give you a weird look, tromping through Whole Foods in full gear (helmet safely locked to the bike). I kind of like it that way.

With bags, I just put the helmet on the pillion. Never had it fall off, even when pushing the bike around.

When the luggage is off, I put the helmet on the upright portion of the top case rack.
