Finally decided to try a Buell. I've currently got a 98 Springer and a 99 ZRX-1100. Never ride the springer so it's going. Looked at a leftover 06 XB12x Uly and an 07 Uly. The 06 is a grand less. Any real difference between the two? Also, is there anything in particular I need to know before buying? I posted this in the Knowledge Vault too but this looks like a better spot for it...

For a grand, I'd say you should get the '07.

I have upgraded my '06 to '07 specs, things like fork springs, inner airbox cover, tires, and seat. None of those upgrades were too expensive or hard to do, but I think any 2nd year vehicle will be better than the 1st year one. Although I am very pleased with my '06 and would buy it again.

After all of that said, if it were my money and not yours, maybe I would go with the '06, like I did, do the upgrades and still end up with cash in my pocket.

Definitely go for the 07. You will end up spending an extra grand for mods/updates anyhow. I have an 07 and love it! 7000 miles, and pretty much 0 issues. Expect for the damn clutch cable wireform retainer! Stupidest marvel of engineering EVER!!! : )

My 06 was really good in stock form. Only added about 250 bucks worth of upgrades that really werent necessary. No big problems either. I would say go for the 06, and spend the extra money on fuel.

Thanks...sounds like neither is a bad move. They are asking 11,495 for the 07 and 10,495 for the 06. I've been reading through some of the other threads and it sounds like the 06 is kinda high.

So can these things actually go off-road? Fire roads, powerline trails, etc...?

$11,495.00 is MSRP for a brand spankin new 2008. You should be able to do way better than that for an 07.

There were no 08's on the floor. Maybe I should try another dealer.

Yeah, they won't order '08's when they don't know how to sell the '06 or '07's. I paid $9700 for my '06 13 months ago...So that should be the general area the '07's might be selling for now. But price is not the only thing to consider...if they are a local dealer...then you need to know how well they will take care of you after the sale. You may need to talk to some of their current Buell customers to know the answer to that question. If they take great care of their Buell customers, then I wouldn't mind not getting the cheapest price in order to develop a good business relationship...but I still wouldn't pay MSRP for an '07!

This dealer is asking $9,500 for their '06 Buells. One in Black and one in Orange.

Thanks. They used to have their Buells out on the main floor but now they've moved them in the back of the dealership past the used bike section. You basically need to be on your way to the service counter in the back of the store to even know they have any. They have the 2 bikes I was looking at a couple of other models. About 7 bikes in all. They do have the 1125 though.

I looked up the ones in your link. Better deal than here but would cost about $500 to NC so that's about a wash. I'll have to make this dealer here a lower offer and see if they go for it. Maybe if I show them some other examples they'll be reasonable.

As for going off-road... I run a drill rig for a blasting outfit. Sometimes I get to ride to work. This bike always surprises me. I take this thing in these quarries where you cant even drive a 4wd pickup, steep hills, loose rock, mud. Its scary considering its an (almost) $11,000 motorcycle, but the answer is yes, it will do dirt roads and a little more. I also run the Dunlops, the rear grips like crazy in dirt.

Awesome. I was hoping it wasn't just another wannabe. I was looking at the new BMW GS800 but I spend 90% of my time on the road and 10% in the dirt. The GS is mostly dirtbike.

Brakes2late - come on over to Carolina Corner Carvers and introduce yourself. We have several Uly owners with C3 and have had success with several local dealers. I would suggest Ray Price, Shelton's in Goldboro & Smithfield.

Brakes2late-

Head over to Ray Price HD/Buell in Raleigh, they have a leftover '06 and '07 on the floor for $8995. Talk to Jordan in sales, he rides and races Buells.

Not looking to pick a fight with Ulynut, but I have a different view on my '06 Uly's dirt worthiness.
It isn't an off-road bike.
Dirt roads, gravel roads, 2-track, etc is all fine, but it is not to go further w/o a strong sense of trying to prove something.
No comparison at all to my real dual sport (2001 KTM 640), but I cannot stand the KTM for more than 1-2 hrs of riding on the road.
Also, the Uly gearing is too tall for anything remotely tight (<25mph).
I have a fried clutch to prove it.

It is a street bike #1 and #2, and an off-pavement bike #3.
Fortunately, it is very good at 1 & 2.

Hard surfaces are OK, but sand is scary, and I would stay away from mud, too.

If you can live with the taller '06 seat (which I like), then the '06 might be a better deal. Just make sure it is up to date on kickstand and BAS sensor rework at the dealer.

Thanks everyone. I have a KLX300R for real off roading so the Uly won't see too much of that. The bikes I'm looking at are at Ray Price. They are the only 2 Uly's they have except for their demo ride bike. I did talk with Jordan. Nice guy.

Brakes2late,
Thats way high for 06-07. I paid $10,800 + tax for my '08. Find a dealer that wants your business.

Found an 06 locally that has the side bags, both shields and both seats plus a cover for $9900. Has about 3,400 miles on it. Warranty valid until May. Gonna take a look at it this week.

If it helps for a price point:
I paid about $8600+tax on my '06 Uly with 1,000 miles on it back in Sept '06 from Ocala H-D.
No bags or extras, but pretty much showroom condition and with 1,000 mile service complete.
It was built June '06, so warranty good until this summer.

Just got a call from Ray Price Harley and they said they had not updated the prices on the tags hanging on the bikes yet. The 06 is $8995 and the 07 is $9995. 2yr warranty. Sounds more like it!

Just want to clarify my previous post. I don't mean to say this thing is a dirt bike. The point I intended to make is this bike is capable of more than dirt roads if you are willing to push it. I used to ride up these same quarry roads on a CB750, and tore that bike up in no time. I haven't fried a clutch (yet) on my Ulysses, in fact the bike is really solid. I don't claim to be an expert rider, just to have more guts than brains.

Now the proud owner of an 06 Uly!!! Test rode one at Ray Price yesterday and couldn't resist. Picking it up tomorrow. Only bitch I have is the seat height and I'm 6' tall! (yes it's the lower seat) It's actually not so much the height but the width. Is there a mod or aftermarket seat available?

Oh yeah, what's the deal with that fan! Almost made me pull over to see what was wrong. I've used these fans on large computers for cooling and they never make that much noise.

It's a hellofa fan ain't it. Its for moving more air across the rear head due to the frame design. There are a few things you can do for heat management.
