Ya, I know, the question has been asked before, but, this time it is my dime. I have been riding Harley baggers for 25 years. I sold my 05 electra glide last week because, I CAN'T TAKE IT ON DIRT/GRAVEL ROADS. Last year it drove it across canada, through the canadian rockies, to vancouver island and back, and I live in maine. I checked out the bmw's, the suzuki v-stroms, the triumph tigers, and the buell's. The only choice I could see was the Buell. The local dealership is working up prices on a left over 06, and a new 08, putting on the goodies for my trip to alaska this summer. Drummer exhaust, an extra fuel cell, gps, etc. My question is this, is the 08 worth the 3g's extra on the price? Are the upgrades they made on the 08 important enough to justify the added cost? Is the 06 top notch as well as the 08's? I appreciate any and all responses, as the dealer will have the prices ready this week. thanks dennis

not to me it isn't! your brand new 06 will have the full two unlimited mileage warranty not that you will actually need it. My 06 Uly will be two years old in May and I have over 16,000 trouble-free miles on it with no problems at all!

I do like the new XB12XT with the different front fender.

This thread is still active, infact its only a few links down, check it out. Someone asked the same question about the 3g difference. To me, i would say spend it and get the 08, others argue to get the 06 and use the cash difference to farkel more.

My 2 cents: There are lots of significant improvements for the '08 bikes. If it is in your budget to get an '08 and still have money for accessories then get the '08.

I just put a deposited down on an '06. Getting an '08 would have over extended my budget so, for me the '06 was a better choice. Sometimes it comes down to what you can afford. I got a great deal on a great bike so I'm happy.

...get the '06 and then buy one of these:

...and then every time you can't turn a tight enough radius or have to get your TPS re-set (which won't be very often at all) just look at your Rolex and say, "Oh Well".

Great idea on the Rolex, I always wanted one to go with my penny loafers.

That's funny Johnboy. The turning radius on the '06 Uly doesn't seen to be any worse then my old Firebolt. Never had a problem with the turning radius of the bolt. A $40 investment in a cable and free ecmspy software will allow me to reset my TPS.

Or another way to look at the $3k difference; you could fly out to Vegas, get a nice room, gamble a little, eat well, then get a couple of hookers.... all for about 3 grand, or so.

SUMMARY:

Flight 500 (round trip)
Room 500 (2 nights)
Food and gambling 1,000 (2 nights)
Hookers 500 (each X two)

TOTAL: $3,000

'All The Memories' ... Priceless!

*NOTE: FRB comp will leave you with an extra $1,500 - so that will mean 5 hookers instead of just 2.

DISCLAIMER: All Hooker figures based on anecdotal hear-say, ONLY. Hooker prices and availability may vary, based on seasonal variables and conventions in progress - please check local providers (e.g., the concierge at the Bellagio - tell him Johnboy sent you) before booking.

The only tough to add/expensive '08 feature I wish my '06 had is the tighter turning radius, and that only matters in parking lots/garage and when doing u-turns or very tight off-road (which I do not do on a Uly).

I would save my money, unless money is truly not an issue.

You could do the upgrades (minus the engine oil systems and electronics) for well under $1K, if you decided you had to have them.
I am thinking about trying the '07 fork springs (relatively low cost and easy), but will hold off on the tighter turning for now. I did just order a $35 '07 airbox cover, as I am too lazy to modify my '06 to save $35.

Arktictm,

You don't still have the part number for the airbox laying around do you? I need to get one ordered too.

Thanks,

fuel economy is better on 06 then on 08, or at least people claim it is. I have only 800 miles on my 08, but I have filled up 5 or 6 times and each time I am getting right at 40 mpg. This is riding backroads at around 70 MPH. But the low fuel light comes on at 135 miles consistently.

Hadn't heard the gas mileage claim before, this summers trip to Alaska from maine could mean alot of $$ extra on gas if all I can expect is 140-150 miles per tank. Any other comments on this fuel mileage difference between 06's and 08's? Been to Vegas Johnboy, think I hired your sister there............

Groundedmountain,
I own an '06 Uly and have had great experiences with it and on it(except for rear wheel bearings @7800 mi.). I did find an '08 Uly w/1490 mi., all hard bags included at a local BMW dealership for $9,995.00. The '08 has many improvements, but an extra 3g's for new is pretty steep. Look for used '08s. They are around.

Goundedmountain,
I got, consistantly, 53-55 mpg with my '06 Uly until Oregon tree huggers demanded and got the state to allow only fuel with 10% ethanol. Now my mpg is 46-48 on a good day and now fuel is $3.47 for premium. Still better that driving my 12.5 MPG truck : (

Fuel mileage seems to go up after breakin and I suspect that the idle setting and size of wind screen has something to do with it as well. My 06 light comes on mostly around 160 in most riding but highway can be higher.

I can live with anything over 40mpg, that is what my 05 bagger gave me, guess if I was that concerned over gas prices I might as well forget about my cross country trips. I have pretty much decided on a new 08, with my trip to alaska in July, having a warrenty in place would be in order. Monday I go to the dealer and haggle over price. Being an old yankee horse trader helps when talking down the price. I am planning on having a Drummer exhaust work up, any feed back on that? The feed back I have recieved is appreciated, this is a big thing to me, changing from a bagger to a Uly, I want to do it up right, before I had the 05, I rode a 70 Electra glide for 23 years, and I plan on keeping the Uly for many years if it fits.
