I've made up my mind on two bags. I like the idea of having a tank bag because of the map thing on it (a Zumo is in the far future though) but the tail bag looks better IMHO. I only want to buy one so which would you choose? I can't seem to make up my mind.

Here is what I'm looking at:

I've never ridden with a tail bag (unless you count a duffel bag bungee'd to the seat), but I live out of my tank bag for most of my riding. Even with the side bags attached, I rarely ride anywhere without my tank bag. The main reason is that I have a few staple items (rag, digital camera, earplugs, map, etc.) that I like having with me within easy reach.

The tail bag has twice the volume of the tank bag so only YOU can figure out the importance of that. It's only $10 more so quite a bargain. I have both a tank and tail bag but hardly ever access either one while on the bike (especially not the tail bag). The tank bag covers the gas cap but you get used to it. The tank bag covers the tank and that's a loss.

I recommend the tail bag!

+1. And I really like my Buell Deluxe Tank Bag.

I've ridden behind a few tank bags over the years, but the Deluxe works great on my Uly. It actually fits which may not be the case with a universal, it's expandable, lots of room, allows me to still see the instruments when unexpanded, and it seems to be durable as I've used it almost daily for 30k+ and 1.5 years.

Only drawback I've found is the rain cover balloons if the tank bag is unexpanded and you can't see the instruments. Solved the problem by folding up the slack at the bottom of the cover and cinching it down then.

I'm partial to tank bags though so my opinion is biased...

I have found that with the height of the Uly and the height of me, having a tall tail bag gets in the way of my big leg swinging over. I'll only use a tail bag if I really need to. Otherwise I use the Cortech Mini tank bag with straps.

The tailbag that I listed is pretty small. It looks about the size of a tankbag.

I have to agree with Andre... With all three bags on, it is difficult for me to swing my leg over. Most of the time, I actually put the kickstand down first, and stand on the left foot peg while swing my right leg over (getting on or off). Blessed with a long torso, but short legs. Cheating yes... but it works. JB

I agree. I never go anywhere except to the car wash without my tank bag. It will take you some getting used to at gas stops though. I have the Buell Deluxe. I have used it so much the main zipper is coming loose from the bag. I am going to have to decide if a new Buell bag or some other brand will replace it. I really like the way the Buell bag fits the bike.

With my tailbag on, I sorta have to jump to get my leg over the bike...

Take a look at www.motopakluggage.com. They make a nice size tail bag that slips on over the backrest. Buell also makes a similar one but it is a bit pricier. Very convenient to simply slip the bag on/off without dealing with bungee hooks and the like.

I find that too. The up side is a tall tail back can provide some back support, and that can really be a wonderful thing.

There is also a very nice tailbag available from Twisted Throttle that was designed to fit a BMW R1100S. It will hold a full face helmet when expanded and works well on the ULY Tail. It is also very water resistant.

I prefer the convenience of a tail bag, it doesn't require removal or mess'n with at fuel stops. If ya ride a lot and tour this can be a pain in the a$$.

Personally, I prefer a tankbag as having a tailbag on the Uly makes getting on and off the bike a challenge for me.

Plus, I think it's just more convenient to have things in front.

I have one of these on my Uly:

...it looks really good and complements the lines of the bike.
