My guess is that it will be a long time before we see a water cooled powerplant in what is ostensibly a dual sport motorcycle. Given the changes in 08, my guess is that the 09s will be relatively unchanged.

If the rotax motor is coming to another Buell soon, the logical choice would be the Lightning street fighter.

Put the 1125r motor in the STT for the guys who want more of a motard bike. Leave the Uly alone except for maybe a 19 inch front wheel for better tire choices. I don't need 146hp to go down dirt roads.

If you look at the way Buell had to mount the radiator and ducting on the 1125R you can see that the Rotax setup would be pretty much destroyed by a trail tip over. The placement and mounting of the radiators will pose a real challenge to the staff at Buell. Even a pin hole in the radiator of a FI bike will cause you to stop dead (unless you cook the motor to get home) Most of the real crashes and all of the trail tip overs barely even nick the current model...

Seems like there's allot of talk about 145hp and dirt roads. As a former hare-scramble racer I can state that you don't NEED 103hp to go down a dirt road either. So why all the BS about dirt roads? This bike is about like a Hummer H2; can it go off road? Yes. Will it tear up the trails with real 4X4s? No. It's the same with our bikes. If we took all the riding time spent on all the Ulys built so far I'd bet that less than 1% of all that time was spent on dirt. Of course some will O/R more than others but the vast majority of us hardly ever set a tire on the stuff. We like it because it's a tall, comfortable, good performing bike. Saying that we don't NEED (there's that N word again) 145hp reminds me of when Eric was telling us 06 owners that we didn't NEED any more steering lock on our bikes. It wasn't that we were trying to be Chris Carr out on dirt roads, we just wanted to be able to turn around in a smaller area than an Explorer needs. Yes I may not NEED 145hp, but I do WANT it. I don't NEED my Uly, but I sure do want it. If I had 145hp in my Uly would I use it? Maybe not very often, but getting my fat ass around is no mean feat! Shit man that's why the bike has a throttle not an On/Off switch. Bring on the POWER!!!!!!!!!

The above statement is not endorsed by this site, Buell, HD, the US Government or your Mom.

I would love to see a motor that addresses the heat and fan noise. My bike is really hard to ride much above 80 degrees here in CA. Frame is too hot to touch and even with protective clothing I have to spread my legs to avoid getting burned.

I was hoping that Buell could / would address the problem with this engine but my guess is that they either don't know how or they have done all they can. I've owned air-cooled BMWs, Ducs, and a Guzzi and now appreciate the head cofiguration of those models when it comes to heat management.

For me, I'm not sure the 1125 motor is the right for a Uly type bike. Something lighter and with better gas mileage would be appreciated. I actually am happy with the current HP but realize that mags love to praise the ponies.

I've ridden my Uly in temps from 12° to over 100° F. While it does put out some heat in the hotter weather, it's still tolerable. If you prefer the design of a BMW or Guzzi, then I suggest you sell your Uly and buy one of those bikes. The Uly offers more to me than both of those Marques combined, and I've owned a few of each.
I suggest you HTFU.

Crusty,

My note was specific to the cooling benefits of other motor designs not the bikes themselves. The heat issue is something that comes up with this bike all the time by riders and reviewers. We have board participants adding fans, drilling holes, coating pipes, adding scoops, etc. all trying to deal with the issue. Most of us love the bike design but wish for less heat.

Who is adding a fan to help with cooling? The people drilling holes are doing it to increase air flow to the air box, not to improve cooling. I had my muffler ceramic coated for for appearance reasons, not for heat issues. Yeah, some people are installing right side scoops, but I haven't seen concrete evidence that they have gained anything other than a change in appearance.
As far as the fan noise, I don't find it objectionable at all. In fact, I believe that
LOUD FANS SAVE LIVES

And, Yeah; I'm having a Bad Day.

Goin muddin tonite, its been raining ALL day, it should be thick and chunky. For those of you that dont ride the Uly off road, I guess I will have to try and pull up the ratio with my CityX (which really is NOT an adventure bike or Dual sport) But I will get on with the bendy and dirty with any uly rider that wants to. : D MUDD its whats for dinner.

Buell made a few changes with the '08 bikes that should help with the heat some, and will definately help with fan run time. They improved oil pumping, added a larger oil cooler, and changed the temperatures that control when the fan kicks on & off. I bet it's a big improvement over the earlier models.
