I've said it before and now again. Buell was good to me. I'll probably own another Buell. BMW has by far and away been the most responsive and generous manufacturer/dealer when attending to my needs as an owner (even when the dealer knew my bike had been in competition). It's been a great experience. I just got back from 60 miles off road in the sandy hills this morning. What a blast. Cheers.

Absolutely. BMW NA are without a clue about their retail customer. As the present owner of 5 BMW's I type this comment with some experience. I am old enough to know better than to say never again but have passed on any new BMW since 01 and went to Buell.

Rubberdown, you are lucky. But look deeper, it's your dealer, not BMW taking care of you. I worked on BMWs in the past and can speak from the "other side of the counter" BMW is known to drag out warranty claims for months or simply deny them months after the work was completed. After all BMWs don't have flaws, the customers do.
After saying all that, I still like BMW motorcycles. F800GS ADV please.... |

I owned BMW's for over 20 years from air heads to K's to oil heads. My biggest beef was that BMW had known problems and would not recall or admit the issue and instead would frustrate owners with inconsistent warranty treatment. Many owners had ruined vacations and multi-thousand dollar bills to repair the bikes.
That is what intrigues me about this new 800. Limited BMW parts on the bike should make it reliable. |

Mark - I noticed you have "None" listed as your current bike. Did you get rid of the Uly you wrote about last summer? If so, why - just curious 'cuz you seemed happy with it at the time. |

Yeah he is best Pals with our KTM dealer here so they gave him a swinging deal, sworn to secrecy but lets just say the dealer barely got to first on that one. |

I am in your camp. Some of the things that I miss are the folks that ride BMWs are great and not hard to find as every state has at least one rally and the national rally moves around the country. I also miss the aftermarket support. The 800 GS is only now getting to market and there is a rush to support it. |

I have owned several BMW's from K bikes,R bikes and GS's alike and other than stuff you expect to replace or fix after flogging a bike for 50 or 60 thousand miles I have been very happy.
My last GS was almost bullet proof and probably took the worst flogging of any bike I have ever owned.
At 67000 miles I had to do bearings on tranny,did the rear seal at same time.
Other than that pretty regular stuff you would expect.
In 79000 miles it never left me stranded so what the hell else can you expect from a bike.
My K bikes were a little different story, had to keep up on them, lack of service means she shall break.
Even with good service my last K bike let me down a couple of times.
So far I love the Uly, I figure a Uly and a 800GS should be a good combo |

Well I have owned a couple BMW's. The maintenance and repairs are more expensive than any bike on the planet. Final drive seal $600 abs brake service $400 abs module $2000.Dealer base is shrinking not growing. Leaking clutch cylinders, failing abs modules, final drives failing, lean FI problems and more. Warranty issues are ignored (my experience). Repairs=$$$. IMHO the KTM would be the better choice. Far more KTM dealers here in the Midwest. Proven and awsome KTM 950 NO REGRETS!!! Rethy |

Ever change the oil and filters on a 950 Adventure, now that was a nightmare
The new super enduro has it all going on should be a way better more dependable mount.
KTM IMHO has everyone buy the balls right now.
They have a great adventure bike, awesome super motards in several different engine sizes
Dirt Bikes that are second to none
Soon to have the 690 Hard enduro should be another big winner
And the what looks to be an amazing new Super Bike.
All other manufacturers should be talking notes KTM is on a role
That said I still will probably own the 800GS
Someone has to buy them |

I've owned 7 BMW's in the past 15 years and currently bought a new '07 R1200GSA that I love so far. I agree that BMWNA sucks and that BMW's aren't as reliable as in the past. Let's face it, the old BMW's were very basic, like our Uly's, now, with all the electronics, computers, and CANBUS system they're almost impossible to work on. Last summer we went trail riding in Colorado. Four of us had Kawasakis and one on a KTM. Guess which one ended up having the problems? If you think BMW service is expensive, try KTM service. I can still change the oil and adjust the valves very easily on my BMW. But I still enjoy the shit out of my Uly. For one up touring or curve carving the Uly is the best. The BMW 800GS looks sweet but isn't for me. Now the new 450 might be another story. Anyway, can't wait for spring, its snowing here right now and I'm already getting cabin fever.} |

As for the BMW rally culture, yes - that is something sorely lacking in the Buell world. But it is understandable for a marque that has only been around for 20 years, 18 of which have been narrowly focused on sportbikes and racing.
I solved the problem for now by maintaining my BMWMOA membership and just riding my Uly to the rallies ;). |

so anyway, the new 800GS does not appeal to me for the same reason that the 1125 does not appeal to me. Water cooling isn't! |

I'm not much on complicated, hard to work on bikes. Two big wheels, a big air cooled motor, and lots of suspension. That's all I need. Dealer did the first service and I do the rest. |
