One thing to be aware of for the Garmin 60CSx is that you need to download the street level maps to it. To do that you need to buy the Street Navigator software which comes in the car kit I believe. You will also need a SD card to store the maps on. It takes about 1.5 gig to fit the entire U.S. on I believe. I have a 2 gig card and everything fits. I am still learning how to use the unit, but it has worked pretty well so far.

OK so now I am more confused than when I started.
But reading between the lines it seems as if most everyone likes the 450-550 Zumo's
Off to my local boat yard and see what they are using

If you are really going to the boat yard - they should know about Lowrance GPSs

I have the iway 500c (now discontinued but still available at under $400. 10G of preloaded maps, 10G to download MP3s. HUGE touch screen

CNET ReviewThe bottom line: With its big, colorful touch-screen display, its extremely accurate receiver, and its intuitive user interface, the Lowrance iWay 500c takes its rightful place at the head of its class.

What The Fat man said... except instead of spending $200 or more... go on ebay and buy a Quest 1 for $150. Make sure it has the DVD, the unlock code, the car adapter, and the AC adapter.

All of the listed virtues (aside from touch screen), but also weather proof and it will fit comfortably in a pocket, and run for 10 hours on a battery charge.

screw it!

- i think i'll just wait until spring and re-assess. Perhaps by then there will be a reliable cheap big screen, large capacity, back-road friendly waterproof something or the other available.

For those who REALLY want to know what I am talking about with respect to road preference on the 2610, here is a link to the owner's manual:

www.garmin.com/manuals/StreetPilot2610GPS_OwnersMa nual.pdf

The page with the preference screen is about in the middle of the document in the "Reference" column on the right.

The Zumo will "avoid highways" but I haven't taken the time yet to know what Garmin calls "highways" yet.

Also, with the added flexibility of the 2610 comes complication which may be a bad trade-off for some users.

My question to rest of the Uly crowd is, GPS durability. I am on my 4th GPS unit.

I have the Buellie Garmin Quest 1 which has some limitations but has been adequate for me off-roading in the Rocky Mtns and highway travels. Its re-route live capability adapt nicely to change in venue. I also use it in the car as well with the speaker on the power jack adding less to the distraction in traffic.

My initial one failed in the first week, couldn't see satelites. It was replaced immediately. I have not had a problem since.

If it had blue tooth that would be nice for the bikes. Buell/H-D sell the mounts for Harley and cars so I find its versatility useful plus 10 hours battery life and small size enable use hiking and bicycling.

"Avoidances—select the road types you
want to avoid on your routes. The zūmo
uses these road types only if alternative
routes take you too far out of your way
or if no other roads are available. If you
have a traffic receiver or antenna, you
can also avoid traffic incidents."

This is from the Zumo manual. The options to avoid are Toll Roads and "Highways" whatever they are. I can't copy the material from the 2610 manual for some reason.

I look at these things every so often and haven't decided yet either. The Garmin 60Cx and 60CSx had a $50 rebate good through the end of the year.

CNET has a lot of great information from members this week about portable GPS devices.

A few things to establish why there are such a big cost differences between portable GPS models. Most of us would probably all agree that more or less, all portable GPS devices do the same thing: give you directions.

But it's all about how they deliver those directions and how many added features you tack on that will start incurring more cost on the device. Just like any electronic devices, more features mean more money. And for GPS devices, it's things like larger screen size, traffic alerts, memory-expansion slots, Bluetooth for ease of updating firmware or maps, text-to-speech (the ability for the device to tell you when turn rather than having to read it on the screen) functions, and some even offer MP3 players built right in. The bottom line is that it's all about what you want in a GPS. So without further ado, I give you all a few selected answers to start on.

There is a lot of great information provided, so read through the entire thread to be completely informed. I think that once you've all gone through the CNET members' answers, you will all have a very good idea of what features are important to you to make the right buying decision for you or your loved one - da Buell.

Just ordered the Garmin 2820 through this url http://www.walletbuddy.com/index.php?tab=offers&gr oup_id=4719&gclid=CK-hoK7ql5ACFQIUPAodkAK87A which activates a 5% coupon and free shipping through overstock.com

Total was $617. I've seen used ones on ebay going for the high 500's. It's a nice motorcycle friendly GPS, and this price is about the best you're gonna get. Coupon is only good until 12/10/07

Financial Spousal Control Unit OK'd the the numbers and Happy Birthday/Xmas to me! Now I'll have to mount my cheapo Mio GPS to her R1150R.

Johnny,

Just be aware of what version maps are loaded and on the CD. If they're not at least v.8, they will have some serious glitches. For example, they may not know one-way streets and route you the wrong way. I got v.7 with my 2610 and that's what it did. The v.8 cleaned it up.

Hey Johnnylunchbox,

I'm pretty ignorant about all of this; why did you go with the Garmin 2820 rather than the Garmin Zumo ??

Thanks

Well, like I said, I'm gonna wait until spring, but just FYI buydig.com is selling Zumo 550 for $625.49.

If I had to buy one today, I'd go with the Zumo. I think for me it is going to come down to screen size - and even though the Zumo screen is not quite as wide as the 2820, it is taller which I think will translate into a larger image on the screen.

EDITED: I reserve the right to change my mind if more $200 refurbed 2610s come back on the market.

I don't believe that 60CSx includes the street level maps that allows you to use the GPS to find an address. I think the description is a bit misleading because I have that GPS and had to also buy City Navigator I believe it was to add that capability. The map included with that GPS only has the major roads such as interstates. That cost was over $100, but I don't remember exactly what it cost.

You guys are right, the 60 and 76 Cx and CSx don't come with detail maps. They have a good base map of all major roads, then you add City Navigator 2008 for street level detail maps ($100 or so street prices). Or you can add topo mapping or marine charts for boating, again at extra cost.

Garmin didn't know how you wanted to use it so it is better it they let you figure it out for yourself. And don't forget, you are getting the world's most versatile and best performing handheld GPS receiver.

But you can navigate, with full autorouting, via all major roads in North America right out of the box. It will get most people within a few miles of where you want to go.

I know a guy that goes to google maps, gets the lat/long position for a street address, enters that on his GPS as a waypoint, and then just fumbles around, making turns that close in on it, until he finds it.

For me, it was worth $100 the first time I used it to coach a non-English speaking Somali cab driver on how to get from Portland International Airport to an obscure address in Kennebunkport. We'd still be in the cab if it was not for the Garmin 76Cx and City Navigator.

Want some obsolete Garmin mapping to play with? Drop me an email to "jacker at midmaine dot com" and include a mailing address. Great stuff if you're the least bit queer for mapping or GPS.

Jack

Karlsbad, I have had a zumo 550 for a couple of months now and don't think I could live without it! Simplicity is the key, if the rain is turning to snow and it is getting dark the last thing you need is a fiddly unit that crashes or is hard to use. You have to look at the mapping software as well, is it easy to use and logical. I just sprinkle waypoints/viapoints along my route and dump it into the Zumo and leave. This way you decide exactly which route you will take and not rely on the "fastest" or "shortest" crap. Excellent coverage and never a hassle finding and navigating to fuel stops, hotels and restaurants along the way. Hell, I even use it to prevent taxi drivers from taking the "scenic" tourist route! It performed well in snowy wet conditions up to 100 deg in the desert all the time being easy to read/use even with gloves. Filled a 2 gig card full of my favorite tunes and manage them easily via the screen. My only minor gripe is the security screw, I would have had something a bit larger you could use with you thumb, set up so it wouldn't back all the way out and get lost. I would never leave the unit on the bike and rely on the screw stopping someone from taking it.
So, so far so good! I would suggest the 550 as you get all the stuff you will mostly just end up buying anyway for less.

johnboy, not really sure why I chose the 2820 over the Zumo. The 2820 seemed a little more rugged, and I already have a cheapy Mio for a portable unit.
