I had my Uly in last week at my Buell Dealer for a 10K... it took them 6 hours and I was charged for 6 hours plus parts.

That sure seems like a long time but I have never done it myself.

Any thoughts?

That's in the range that I paid / pay. There seems to be a general consensus that Buell maintenance is cheap. But that is only true if you do your own. If you use a dealer for service, it's expensive.

Yes. Owning a motorcycle has vastly improved my mechanical skills. I can't afford to pay the dealer $180 to change the oil, which is basically what the odd 5k services amount to.

Now I do my own 5k services, and pay the dealer to do the 10k ones. Those actually involve things I'm not (yet) comfortable doing.

I think Buell says 2.5 hours in their book, 6 is vrod time and they take apart the top end. People say the hardest maintenance item on a buell is fork oil because you have to remove the forks but you don't need to do fork oil at 10k, don't know what took them so long besides the fact buells are probably alien to them.

Hmm, as I recall you DO change fork oil every 10K. At least I have, and I follow the Buell maintenance schedule.

Yes fork oil change is required at 10K. I've had 3 10K services done and they were all billed over 6 hours.

Depends on the dealer rate.

6hrs? Maybe with the fork oil? Seems like too much. I'd call a few other shops.

The 10k is about $500 depending on where you go.

500 shamolies would buy plenty of tools, gas, ect. No way I would ever hand over that kinda cash to a dealer for something I could do myself by hook or crook. Fork oil change can't be that bad even if you have to take the forks off. So what?

Thanks for the input guys...

They changed the fork oil, engine oil, primary oil and spark plugs.

Labor rate is $65 hour.

Daves highly recommended this dealer who knows and works on Buells.

Lots more maintenance costs than my Goldwing!

Ouch. I paid less than that for Ducati 6K service, with all the famed expense of Desmodromico valve clearance adjustment (2 valve head). That included an oil change also.
Aside from fork oil change, everything else is so simple on this bike that I cannot see how anyone would spend 6 hours, let alone a professional mechanic.
My bike is '06 at about 9k, so I guess I know who will be doing the 10k service!
Now I just need to figure out if I will buy the stuff for the TPS or not.
Anyone know what a dealer will charge for just a TPS reset?
I guess I'll ask today when I pick up my clutch cable wireform (my first failure on the bike).

Dealer charged me $20 for a TPS reset. About 15 minutes of time.

Well...in Alberta, Canada I was quoted 8 hours @ $100 per for the 10K(mile)service (the CDN$ is now at par with the US$). Plus parts! At these rates I should have kept the Beemer...But the Uly is so much more fun...

To replace the tires is another story - the dealer wants $200 more than the shop down the street for the stock tires - and then wants 3 hours labor to install them. $800 bucks for less than 6K is outrageous.

By the way, the "Alberta Advantage" (read big oil money) has the local dealer upping the list by $1,000 and we all pay it if we want a ride.

I think the expectations that service costs would be less on the Uly are not proving out. If you do not do the work yourself, the costs seem to be fairly high when considering the simple nature of the bike, lack of plastic to remove, etc.

Actually I have been very surprised by the service costs. We had one fellow indicate that they charged him 3 hours service to install the new heated grips while a non-mechanic on this board said it took him less than an hour to do the whole job. Something just doesn't seem to be right. I bought the Uly after owning BMr's for quite a while partially to get away from the expensive services but I don't find the bike to be any less so far. My initial service was about $500.

my 1k service was about 250$. I will do the rest and I think that is where the savings will come in. The only reason i too it in for the 1k was because it was the first one and I was thinking maybe it was better if they see it the first time just in case. I think 250 is crazy for what they did 500 would really be a rip off.

My dealer charges 5 1/2 hours (@$65/hr) labor for the 10,000 mile service. I know this because they called me Thursday to let me know the 30,000 mile service has a fork oil change and that was going to be an extra 3 1/2 hours and they wanted to make sure I was aware of that. You know it's going to be a bad day when the HD dealership calls you to let you know it's going to be expensive. : )

It appears that the rates and times are highly dealer dependent.

When I was at a BRAG event in LaVale, MD a couple years ago, I noticed that the dealers shop rate was $32/hr. LaVale is a small town in the mountains, which probably explains the difference. They took good care of me though when I came in at 4:45 PM with a bad wheel bearing (I left at 7:00 with a fixed bike and a bill of $40.) If your local dealer insists on screwing you, at some point it becomes cheaper to take it someplace else and make a vacation out of it.

Do they require you to buy the tire from them?

My dealer gives free 1K and 5K services with purchase of new Buell or HD. 10K is $450 range at several dealers I've checked. Service manual cost $58...you decide.

Went to my dealer today for quote on 10K service, $700. + Can anyone tell me why the forks need to get oil changed? Closed system,no dirt, no heat,[relative] why would it break down? engine is 5k. trans every 10k? Is this just a way to enrich dealers for inventory- Buell, parts etc. I'm thinking of just doing the fluids and plugs. The rest of the 10k. is just touchy feely stuff, it seems that a general pay attention to your bike stuff is all that is needed. Just read posts on fork seals, and dealer messups on Buell service. Any help !

I picked up my bike today from the 10K service. $350 which included installing an 07 airbox cover and reflashing the ecm.
Anyone who's still got the stock airbox cover on their 06 should not hesitate to change it over to 07 it is a huge improvement.

Do it yourself or find a reputable shop/friend will do it for you. Just keep all receipts and a log of what was done.

Aside from changing fork oil the most difficult maintenance on a Buell is the primary chain adjustment. Adjusting the primary chain is far simpler than adjusting valves.

I can perform most maintenance including tire changes faster than I can ride to the local dealer and back. (about 1 hour round trip) Oil change less than $20. Primary fluid change less than $6.

For me it is not just the cost of service but the time as well. If you can afford the dealers service you can afford the manual and tools to do it yourself!
