08 Uly with 1000 miles. Lean surge 3500 RPM any gear on level or down hill with neutral throttle. Ran three days solid and finally got a check engine light on full time. Comes on two seconds after start up. 02 sensor? Anyone have this problem? Dealer has it now but has no data on 08 check engine light. No code was captured. Buell Tech called. No reply yet.

The surge I'm sure is due to the low class ECU that is used. They have to run it lean to met emissions, and I suspect that to do this the fuel is cut off when the engine is not under load, my R11s BMW used the same type of system. Race ECM would fix this I'm sure, I just put up with it, don't ride on constant throttle is another fix.

Try reseting the TPS with the engine at operating temperature.

I'll bet you have a warranty on that 08'. See what your dealer can do before getting everyone out-o-wack about something that might be easily fixed once the trouble code is investigated by your dealer.

No code was captured- bike IS at dealer- buell tech has been called.

The question seems to be, has anyone else experienced this.

I have a 08 just picked it up last night no trouble so far. I put 68 miles on it last night in the rain.

You guys are starting to scare me with this wheel bearing stuff!! Some of the threads I have read were with like 30 something thousand miles should I be "really worried"?

The wheel bearings are fine. They are just pulling your chain. If there is a problem you have a good warranty.

The wheel bearings, like the drive pins in the 1997 rotors, are fine.

It's when they are improperly installed that trouble comes knockin'.

Sit down, before the first service, with your dealer. Gather the "Essential Tips for Ulysses Ownership" and hand him a copy.

You're going to love the bike.

Just to ease your mind; my Uly has 26K on the clock. The wheel bearings are fine. The belt is fine. The wiring is fine. All I do is gas it up and change the oil every couple of thousand miles. When the tires wear out, I put new ones on.
Take your new Uly and ride the piss out of it. It's a great bike that is a real hoot to ride. And don't waste your time worrying about when something's going to go wrong.

I got my 08 last Sat.It's time for the 1000 maint. Is the 1000 mi. maint. a lot of look at this and charge, or are some of the inspections worthwhile? Obviously oil etc., but $300. for alot of visual seems out there. The bike runs great, does surge a little at lower speeds, but not bad.
starts easy but needs time to warm up or will stumble. I'm getting the GPS for fun but wonder if a non-Buell unit will offer more for less? Harley owners have had issues with updates etc.Love this site!

Depends on what you want the GPS to do Rekrab...

...I've got a Garmin 2730 on mine, and it handles both the nav and music courtesy of XM. The Buell/HD unit - a Garmin Quest 2 wearing the HD name, just does nav (no music).

...there's a Garmin 376c that does nav, music, and weather radar.

It doesnt't exist yet, but I'm going to have to write it.

I'm getting the bug to buy a Ulysses and it occurs to me that MOST the reported maladies are induced.

There is a growing BOK that needs codified.

In a perfect world, we'd get Don Casto in here. He now owns a Uly and has a proven track record for collecting and assembling tribal knowledge in useful fashion.

I'd start at the front wheel and work my way to the back of the bike.

I keep a list of the things (the list is getting smaller) that keep me from buying a Ulysses and the folks at Buell have about brought the items on the list to zero.

For now . . . be aware of the rear bearings and if you see someone tinkering with them, without a torque wrench, you can bet trouble won't be far behind.

By the way, I'd also do a chapter on accessories. One thing that's occurring to me now is that if I buy they bike, I'd got another $5K I'd want to spend . . .

Still. . . cheaper than golf!

If this is the case with the bearings, then please suggest to the folks at the factory to check the settings on their torque wrenches. My rear bearing failed with the original tire still on and no one tinkered with it prior to failure. Bike has been at the dealer nearly 3 weeks now. Bearings and spacer have arrived but still waiting on delivery of rear axle.

The torque for each and every fastener installed at East Troy is recorded along with tons of other information in a data file for each and every motorcycle.

If possible, e-mail me your VIN. I'd like to see how many degrees of rotation the fastener went through and what final torque was on your bike.

If your dealer has been waiting 3 weeks on ANY part from Buell, someone is feeding you a line of pure unadulterated bullshit.

If your bike is "down", unrideable, there is no reason you should not have parts in 24 hours.

I'd be raising more hell with my dealer than you could imagine.

I believe that most HD dealers employ mule train shipment methods. I have noticed that ANY part that they have to ship in will arrive in 7-10 days.

I was told by my dealer that they could get a tire from CO to ID in 7-14 days. For this they wanted a special order charge and special shipping charges added to the cost of the tire, which was already priced about 25% above market prices. Payment due in full before the part is ordered, of course.

I am still "impressed" by this.

Wikipedia actually has a rather high signal to noise ratio. An academic study (don't have the reference) found that it compared favorably with print encyclopedias. The BS tends to be associated with controversial topics on which people have violently different opinions. If there's an active community, errors are soon corrected.

Wikis are an excellent tool for community developed knowledge bases. The SciPy wiki is a good example.

All the torque wrenches on the assembly line are connected to a computer system that tracks torque on each fastener for each VIN.

I pick up my 08 ulysses last night with 6 miles. So this morning got up around 6.30 am and took off. At first I was a little weary about the bike it just didn't take off like my 06 did and didn't seem as strong. As the day went on the bike started to get stronger. Take off seemed to get better and started to lift the front wheel in first like the 06. My engine light didn't come on at all. The steering is great, the heated grip are very nice. The fuel injection is alot quieter and the fan is too. I put around 350 miles on it. So when I got home I let the bike cool off and started, took off the stock exhaust and replaced it with the drummer. Then took the bike for a little ride. Let me tell you this it changed the bike so much. When I took off the bike just seemed to pull twice as hard, I changed to second gear and the bike just wanted to come up. I just love it. To me the bike is ALOT STRONGER then my 06 was ever was. My old 06 I had a drummer, race ecm and K&N filter. My 08 just the drummer and it is STRONGER...

I don't have a clue about the fan but before on the 06 it was just louder and sounded like it was going to lift off. On the 08 you can hear it but its not like its going to take off, plus it feels like it blows hard (if that make any sense). The fuel injection before on the 06 you could hear it with your helmet on but now on the 08 its hard to hear with your helmet off. This morning I took the bike for a little ride to the park way and some back roads. With the new drummer on, the bike performs like a champ. The bike seems to get stronger with every mile. Oh yeah something else. On my 06 the power seemed to really come in around 4200 rpm. On the 08 it seems to come in around 3200 to 3300 rpm. The only thing I didn't like is the seat, you sit back more in it to get comfortable and its uncomfortable to sit close to the tank for aggressive riding. So I put on my low seat that I had. It really helped but that seat really makes my butt hurt after about 1 or 2 hrs.
