Crusty, I agree, the S3T is the most beautiful bike ever made... Which is why I *STILL* own one. The lines on that bike are priceless!

And, that big red/bold type? Ya tryin' to stress me out to get this thing done or summthin'?

And of course, ran in to yet another snag : (
There is a bushing on the triple tail that calls for one on each side. I only ordered one : (

So I guess it's getting some billet aluminum bushings that I'll turn up instead of plastic : )

Today's delema is the fuse block...
The wires going to it are really a tad too long. But one thing I noticed while scoping this out. The whole fuse block is a modular deal. I may have to cut and splice some wires to the fuse block to get it to sit side by side. But I think that will work. There are dovetails molded in to the fuse blocks to allow many combinations.

Ya ever notice how funny our scoots look without a tail section?

Well, here's the tail mocked up with the seat on it.

Not *MUCH* accomplished today. But whadda ya expect after working a 12 hour day as well. See I picked a *REALLY* sucky time to do this. Beginning with Homecoming, I've got a month of vacation, and I've got a butload of work to do before then unfortunately : (

I like the way these bikes look without the tail section. I would do some experimenting if I had the cash.

Great job! So is anyone planning on putting one of those fairings on a Uly?

For those of you who were wondering why Steve was referring to me as a vulture here is my little project:

'04 Buell

2004 XB12S the day I took it home 4 weeks ago.

Stage I

Stage I

Stage I Mods: Pirelli Scorpion Synchs, Race ECM, Exhaust Mod, Race Air Filter, City X Bars, STT Beak, STT Headlight Grille, XB12X Mud Guards, STT Hand Guards, STT Dash Ears, '04 Black Air Box Cover, LSL Steering Dampener, American Sport Bike Right Side Air Scoop, Gold Heel Guards and Levers. All of the STT parts came from Steve's bike.

Inside Pass

Here's me at Road America on June 7th. I look like a monkey doing "something" to a football-need more seat room. Hence Stage II:

Stage II

Stage II

That's right, a complete 2007 XB12STT Tail Section mounted onto a 2004 XB12S. I really though it would be worse: had to do a little grinding on the sub-frame and I have to change to the 2007 XB12STT Rear Brake Reservoir and hose. I also had to splice a few wires but not too bad. I also had to re-route the hose and rear shock reservoir and I will have to upgrade the seat and the saddlebags. Not too bad for about 10 hours of work. Thanks Steve!!!

No, I'm just getting excited about Homecoming. I'll get to see your bike and Maximum's red Uly and I'm going to see Lake Superior, and Niagara Falls, and Moto ST, etc., etc., etc.
Even if the bike isn't finished, I want to see it!

"So, I turned the compression all the way down on the rear shock, sat on the bike, and with help from Budc, we ran a ratchet tie down strap between the rear wheel and the tail. I could only get the rear shock compressed to about 3/16" of an inch of full compression. At that point, there was a good 1/2" to 3/4" between fender and the undertail.

So, I think I'm pretty safe. "

Soooo... I was under the impression a few people had already done the Uly tail swap and discovered an actual problem with bumping. Does this mean it was really all just speculation from the beginning?

Man..... rumors..... they're like viruses.

If it's true there's no real modification needed, just a matter of getting in there and doing the swap, then I'm REALLY interested now. Maybe a winter project, though... I lost too much ride time last year from being rear ended, and I'm not gonna' waste the good weather this year!

Thanks for all these chronicled updates Steve. You're working the kinks out for the rest of us!

~SM

That statement came from a Buell engineer during the on-line chat session after the release of the Uly in 2005:

benandcindy: Is the tail section and windscreen adaptable to the 12S ?

John: No, they are not directly adaptable to the 12S (or 12Ss either). Due to the long travel suspension on Ulysses, we've moved some of the components in the tail around to give as much trunk space as possible. If you put the Ulysses tail components on a Lightning, the rear tire will end up hitting some of those components on hard bumps. The Ulysses windscreen also will not directly fit a Lightning due to the differences in size of the front fairings between the two bikes.

Of course, I haven't met an engineer yet (myself included) who doesn't include a CYA factor when they make such assessments.

I do love how "easy" it is to get the stock buell out of its normal skin. Love that look of the XB12S with the uly front set, but then I did it last year. : D Your job is to now go get MUD.

Nice pics bud!

Now, I think I got's that 'lil fuse block problem licked! No dicing and splicing required... Just tear back about 6" of the cloth tape...

And slide the two together until you hear a faint "snap".

I think I can now route the wires quite nicely... For now, I'm going to have to zip tie the fuse block to the battery box after I line it with some hi-temp mastic(AKA Dynamat).

This is the only part that is stopping me from putting the triple tail on : (

I've got one, but I need two. I did say I'd make on out of aluminum, but I'd rather just use the plastic one. It *SHOULD* be here on Monday.

Update:
Steve and I both got our remaining parts yesterday. I finished putting my bike together last night and will have it on the road today. I know Steve is planning on doing the same thing if he can squeeze it in between all of the other stuff he has to do. Stay tuned!!!

Well, it's all together now. Snapped a few pics at East Troy's 4th of July parade that a friend of mine invited us to join them and some Buell factory people to ride in the parade.

http://picasaweb.google.com/mackay.steve/FinalUlyb oltPics

But, unfortunately, the bike overheated in the parade and I lost an intake seal : ( But Hals service is confident they'll have it done for me tomorrow evening.

Steve, that thing is damn sexy, and highly functional. What was the final tally in parts and labor for you ? ie man hours of your off work time. Looks great, I hope E Troy takes a hint.

Thanks Brian.
Man hours would be very difficult to pinpoint. Since I did the bike here at work. When I had a few minutes, I'd go over there and tinker with it here and there. The dollar count, I'll have to tally that one up. But Hals did give me a GOOD deal on parts when I bought the bike.

But the good news is, my bike runs again. New intake seals, and a TPS reset. I'm going to pick her back up in about 10 minutes!

Perfect. Perfect. Perfect. I was telling Rhinowerx yesterday I wanted to put a Uly rear on an STT and he pointed me back here to you. Pics and pitfall descriptions are great Steve. I made my Ol' M2 a sort of sport tourer for the ride to Laguna and American Sport Bike's Buellton Bar-B-Que. The UlyBolt is a lot harder than I thought and since we are blessed with year round riding conditions here in SoCal my biggest problem since I made the M2 mods is that I love riding it so much I don't save any time for projects. Mine is embarassigly fugly compared to yours. More cheap and dirty than the organic beauty you built.

Thanks again and if there is a way for you to post the parts list please do. If Buell doesn't introduce it before then, I will build one this fall. I was planning on just fitting the Uly screen with the taller windshield for a little wind protection. Doesn't that sound like a project even a banker could do?

I hope to start right after we get back from Laguna in September.

Doh! Wait! I have to put the clip-ons and rearsets back on the M2 before the Buell track Day in Oct. Maybe I can build a UlySTT this winter...

I'll see if I can dig up the entire parts list for this job. Or make one, and post it.

But I can tell you 1st hand, Erik himself saw the bike this evening at the Boiler Room. He was impressed, as were a number of folk.

Buell, get the message. Build it, and they will come!
Someone said I should put a petition on my triple tail for Buell to build this bike : )
