I have noticed that while riding in the rain, my Uly kind of coughs once and a while. I don't know a better way to describe it. It just kind of hiccups here and there. It's not happening constantly, just once every few miles. It only happens when the road is wet. Anyone else notice it? Any way to prevent it? | ||

I did about 200 miles in the rain the weekend of April 1 and I think I may have noticed that once or twice, but it wasn't pronounced. Some folks have mentioned plug wires not being thoroughly seated in the coil on new bikes; might be worth checking that to make sure water's not getting into the connections. | ||

No problem with mine and I was drenched 3 times this past week. Best tank yet before low-fuel light came on. 170 miles. I know others have done better but this bike started new with 135 mile tanks and it has improved over tie. That 170 mile tank was full of gasahol not premium. Mine runs fine on gasahol. Never got that type of mileage on premium. | ||

I noticed the same thing. I think it has to do with the relative humidity and air temp more than plug wires. I would check those too, but I noticed that it coughed at first but didn't later. I think the ECM goes into learning mode and adapts. Just my theory. Completely WAG. | ||

Yes my bike does the same thing. I first thought I was letting off on the throttle just a little or maybe it was sucking in too much rain. | ||

I just got out of about 150 miles of rain and had the same feeling, not sure what it was or why. Seemed to do it more the wetter it was. Horr | ||

Mine does it once after running about 30 seconds on cool mornings. Usually below 50 degrees. | ||

Mine does it at 3000 rpm until it gets warmed up (not above or below,3000 on the nose) and then its good to go. | ||

My Uly does cough when its cold, but not wet. I rode for more than 100 miles in heavy rain and found out where the D616 tires shine. Hands down the best rain tire I have had so far. I was running down I-74 in the dark trying not to get run over between 80-90mph. The bike never missed a beat. | ||

3,000 RPM also carries with it an ECM map "hole" in the fuel mapping. There is a "weak impulse" that is part of the mapping. I think Al at American Sport Bike has documented it in mapping threads here. If you hold the throttle at 3,000 it will stumble just a bit. It doesn't do it if you twist the throttle. You can just feel it miss, and it doesn't miss completely. It just feels like it's at half power. | ||

I was running down a long straight at a consistent speed. It may have been 3000 rpm. I'm guessing more like 3500 though. I'll keep an eye on it next time. It definitely has something to do with rain. It's never happened when it was dry. | ||

I heard it was the plug wires. The early x-Bikes were worse. I had a Firebolt that became a thumper in most all rain. The front cylinder went away. | ||

Someone on here posted a very thorough post about wire chafing. If I remember correctly the front plug wire is very succeptable. I followed his recomendations and used dielectric grease in my plug wire caps. On the way to MBIV I rode through alot of rain with no problems. Search the KV for wire chafing and you should get a hit. | ||

I used to ride a Honda 900 that had rain and washing problems until that fateful day that it was missing terribly and I reached under the gas and grabbed the coils and practically went into defib. Cracked coil casing. Epoxied and no further problem. | ||

I have a similar glitch in very specific conditions. When it is under 50 degrees and raining and while running at steady throttle, right around 3500 RPM, the bike has a recurring cough. Mostly a pain when doing highway miles as this happens to be right at 75mph or so. No problems in a warm rain and never happens on back roads when rolling in/out of the throttle. | ||

I had my '06 stumble several times in hard rain a few weeks ago. It was the first time I had ridden it in hard rain, and it was a mountain downpour. As soon as the rain stopped, the issue went away. It was about 70 degF west of Waynesville NC (about 3k ft elev). My bike (ECM, airbox, etc) is totally stock. Have not checked the electrical connections/coils yet. | ||

I chopped open my air filter cover on my 06. Then a week later ran it in the rain for about 250 miles in a row, noticed the cough a few times. Nothing worth caring about. Still took off when I cracked it. Was all highway maintained 75. | ||

0.o I wonder if i have the spark plug wire issue, because my bike hates it even when it gets a little wet from other cars kicking up the water on the road. I did the open airbox mod and i only had this problem after, i just assumed i was sucking in water. My bike looses alot of power, idles at about 600rpm and sounds like total crap whenever it gets a little rained on. | ||

I had my issue before switching to the 07 airbox. I thought the water was getting in there too. | ||

I've had cough issue in both the wet and dry, pre-07 airbox and after. It's not real bad but could be a bit of a pickle if your mid corner and it does that. I'm checking the plug wires this weekend. |
