Ok, so the Uly isn't intended to be a GS adventure or Dakar... But I'm sure there's a few people out there who have thrown caution to the wind to hang with our BMW (and other) brothers off the beaten path... So, What have you done? Would like to do? Would recommend doing to make it a tougher, more rugged beast? | ||

Cmgaviao, I'm a Uly newbie, so I can't speak with much experience. I don't plan on doing much off-roading. However, I think hardening the bike against damage is a good idea, regardless of whether the trail is paved or not. Here's my plan: Hard luggage - anyone who has dumped a bike with hard cases attached can attest to their effectiveness as giant frame sliders. Hard luggage cases are expensive, but they can absorb a lot of impact, and are a lot cheaper than frame hard parts. Most cases provide a lot of standoff for the rest of the bike. Dark Horse Moto composite front/rear sliders - Again, expensive, but cheap insurance against damaged fork legs or a trashed rear swingarm. These mods, along with some of the OEM features (like the frame bumpers, hand guards, and underslung muffler) should help protect the bike against some of life's harsh realities. Ft_bstrd, That is what I used under my ULY seat to block the hot air from hitting my right thigh. Aluminum mylar was on both sides of the bubble wrap though. Works pretty good and the heat seems to have no affect on it so far. | ||

I've done my fair share to toughen up the Uly. I've added real brushguards-the stockers would pop off very easy, folding shifter, engine/exhaust guards, and axle sliders. | ||

Anyone install a stuntworxs crash cage yet? http://www.powersstuntworx.com/CrashBars.html I was considering it for pegs and lights for the long hauls and early or late at night rides. It will be a must install if I go west for some off road adventures. | ||

There was a bunch of talk about that cage a while back because of how it mounts to the bike. I don't think the person that owns the one bike we know of with it is a badweb member. | ||

Lduly, That has got to be the tallest windshield I have ever seen. Is that to keep the windblast off you while doing a "Indian Larry" impression (standing on the seat)? Tough lookin' Uly. | ||

Lduly, How long have you had the crash cage installed and have you "used" it? I would love to install the cages to make the long days 700 plus mile days a little more comfortable with some pegs installed. Is the cage the standard xb ones on the website? The panniers look like 40MM Ammo cans. I love the look. | ||

On the end of the cross tubes there are like frame sliders, I put a set of bicycle stunt pegs on the ends for "hiway" pegs. They work great, the only thing is the vibes. Sort of like a foot massager. I'll post more pictures later, working weekend nights so no time now. Those panniers are indeed ammo boxes. I had two latches break at poor times during timed rallies. I looked at other cases but could not stomach the $1000 price tag. Got these for $40 shipped to my door!! The windshield is a Cee Baileys 16+. I like it a lot . |
