Got a question for the experts.

Quick background: I'm headed back to Suches for a trout fishing trip with some Army buds next month. And since it's in Suches (about 5 miles from TWO), well...let's just say I have to ride! No truck for me on this trip.

So, with that in mind, I have to figure out what to take...and a few ideas on "how" to take it.

I've a got an ultra-lite rig with a collapsible ugly stick and 4 lb. test and I'm thinking about just loading up a fishing vest with the required tackle.

BUT, I've never done it so I'm looking for some ideas/help!

Thanks in advance.

small panther martin or rooster tail spinners work well.
You can also "fly fish" using an inline float with a leader attached to your favorite fly.

I have used cardboard tubes strapped to the seat, but I am only 10 minutes from the lake.

I have thought of using PVC since it is cheap and easy to work with.

I caught a 17-pound channel cat using a PPF when I was about 10. No kidding. It is a POS though.

i take my sage fly rod in it's case out to the lano on occasion. It's a four piece, so it fits nicely strapped to the back. I keep all my tackle that I use in one of the side cases. I think that the 10' surf rod pick says it all...

What I want to do is rig some sort of rack so I can take my mountain bike to work, and ride from there.... I've seen it done, but I haven't figure out how to do it myself. Fishing is pretty easy... to me... now, rigging a bicycle to the uly... haven't nailed that one down yet.
If anyone has done the bicycle thing, please PM me with details.

Fleas,
What size wheel, 26" or 24"? Either way it should be doable. Remove and strap both wheels on one side and the frame on the opposite. Easier if you have the Buell hardbag frame work to strap them to and hold the bike away from the ULY wheel. While in college I was passenger on the back of a friend's Magna and I one armed curled my Schwinn LeTour road bike across town. Talk about sore tendons. Letours weighed about 30lbs.

A similar trip is on my to do list as well.

How about a "dry" bag for waders to keep things tidy post stream?

I carry two collapsible poles (one open and one closed face reel) in last years Buell sling bag, with a small net, a flashlight, needle nose pliars, some live bait, and a small tackle box. It's tight, but it fits.

Thats all shore / bank fishing though.

I have a 5 piece 9'6" fly rod that breaks down good. I also have a duffle where my wadders, vest and gear can fit into and that goes right on the back seat. Or...I can stuff it into the side bags and be fine. The rod is the hardest thing, but it packs down to a 2' hard tube. That will strap anywhere.

I've seen people use PVC pipe and just strap it to the passenger pegs and seat somehow. me... I bought a travel rod so it packs down. I also used the travel rod when I flew with work. best money I ever spent.

Its not the pole I am worried about, Its the catch baskets.... I would need to mount those on the bike, or mabye just a cooler... Already camping off the back of the bike, I suppose fishing is the next step.

If you look at the picture you will see my biggest problem was keeping the Bunker (bait)juice off my back during braking. The melted ice from the bait cooler would sloush out of the playmate cooler and onto the back of my jacket. This is a testimony of the great breaking ability of the Uly. The odor added to the whole fishing experience. Off of the beach road I would brake the rod in half to avoid hitting overpasses and gas station awnings. Otherwise the Uly is a great fishing platform. I used a sand spike that I altered so that it could be zip tied to the luggage frame.

Aerostich now sells a 6 ft light rod and reel that packs to 15'' long I think. Go check out the website.

Photo from a local streamnear New Lennox,IL last fall.

For the serious flyrodders.
You can see me here:<http://www.angelfire.com/biz2/martinezrodfly/> and listed in the Black's directory.
Recently my focus has been working with seven, yes seven piece rod blanks that coincedently fit into a Ulysses side case in a rod/reel case. I have had great times being able to pack the rod on the bike and I'm very impressed with the way the blanks are made and preform. I'm not trying to pull business my way from the Bad Web, but the topic came up and I do have some experience when it comes to this.
I did fish at March Badness on the Toccoa and took 6 Bows and a very nice 14" wild Smallmouth on that rainy Sunday.
