I am doing my 10k service, and I've got just about everything done except for the forks. Has anyone done an oil change on the forks? Reading the service manual, it looks like I need a special spring compressor to remove and replace the fork caps. Has anyone changed the oil without using any special tools or spring compressors? Details??

Do a search - I was looking into this before and I know someone posted up pics using a tie-down strap to compress the spring.

I've done it twice on the Uly and more on other similar Showa forks. You do need some way to compress the spring. I fabricated my own tool out of wood (with steel bolts I can screw in to engage the holes) which works fine. Suspension shops will sell you one for not too much money. It's really a two-person job (Mrs. Greg helps me out ; ))

I'd avoid the tie-down thing and get (or make) a "proper" tool. The spring is soft enough you just need something that engages the holes in the fork tube that you can press on. No additional leverage or ratcheting needed.

I just did this, and had a thread where I posted some gotchas. "Special tools" might include the 32mm deep well or box end wrench to get the fork caps off.

Also the ratchet strap didn't work for me. Hooks are too big. The compressor tool that Traxxion Dynamics sells is like $30 and was very useful. They say it takes 2 people, I did it myself. YMMV. It is something you could make yourself if you wanted. I don't see the point for the $100+ tools that others sell.

Oh ya, let me know if you have any questions. I'm just in the process of getting the fork legs back in. (no, it doesn't take that long, I've been out snowmobiling!)
