12x_infatuation said (about Eor): "BTW i think it was you that had the most influence on the purchase of my 12x!" Same with me!!! Got back from Iraq a couple months ago, and just bought my Uly last weekend! Thanks Eor! |

"Drug one of your jugs off yet?" I tried.... It's nice to hear that the Uly thread was helpful. I enjoyed doing it, in spite of the strange way in which it developed. I'm long gone, but get email notices that people are still posting to it and sharing info about Ulys. That's pretty cool. I attempted to re-create it with the 1200GS over on ADVRider.com but the vibe wasn't the same and my interest in it tapered off. I might pick it back up someday but now I'm mostly interested in enjoying the ride and taking photos. Here's one for old times sake.... See ya!

Eor, Take the jug bra off, ya chicken! I hear magnesium throws cool sparks. I hope to have the bike in Joplin for the Buell fest there in July. I'd love to try to hook up with you and ride! (Message edited by ft_bstrd on January 19, 2007) |

"I hear magnesium throws cool sparks. " Reminds me of something stupid I did in high school. Chemistry teacher warned us of explosive properties of pure magnesium. Left alone in the back lab, I spied a container marked magnesium. Filled a beaker with water, grabbed some tongs and took some magnesium (I have no idea what liquid it was being stored in) and put it in the water. Lucky for me the magnesium had a slight coat of oxidation. It sat there apparently doing nothing (I said it was a dumb thing to do.) I got bored and left the lab. A few seconds later "boom!". I stuck my head back in the lab and through the haze I could see scattered shards of glass. (I said it was stupid.) Man, was I in trouble. For the non-chemists, the magnesium we see on bikes and cars is safe. It is an alloy, not pure magnesium. Sorry for the thread hihack. |

Magnesium reacts with water? I had no idea. We used to do the same thing with sodium. All we did with magnesium is put on welding goggles and burn it. Talk about a BRIGHT flame. WOW! |

>>>>Reminds me of something stupid I did in high school. I found out, in 8th grade, by getting kicked outta school when Tom Hewitt, who knew damn well what he was putting me up to, told me "this is some left over stuff I need to get rid of . . take it in the boy's room and flush it down the toilet". I did. Fascinating stuff. I had just walked back into the long marble hall when you heard the porcelin shatter and water running. |

"I had just walked back into the long marble hall when you heard the porcelin shatter and water running." ROTFLMAO! Makes you wonder how we survived! |

took some magnesium (I have no idea what liquid it was being stored in) and put it in the water. Are you sure it wasn't Sodium? That is highly reactive with water an usually stored submerged in kerosene or something similar. Magensium generally isn't stored that way. |

"Are you sure it wasn't Sodium?" Geez, you really want me to admit I'm so old I can't remember exactly? It may have been sodium. The storage medium impressed me as some type of petrochemical liquid. The juxtaposition of storing a highly reactive material in what appeared to be a flammable liquid struck me as stupid. It was obviously smarter than what I did. |

Yep...sodium is typically stored in a light oil. The Magnesium we used to play with was in shreds. We'd put it in a beeker and place it over a burner. Once it caught fire, it was so bright you couldn't look at it. It was cool. We used to take the chunks of sodium and toss 'em in 5 gallon buckets or throw them in mud puddles. |
