I don't hear the fan 'cause my a$$ is muffling the sound. ;)

I think the problem with my rear tire wear is exit speed/torque.

I LOVE to slingshot out of turns.

I don't know. I'm gonna work to be smoother on entry to allow entry speeds to be higher and carry the speed through the turn and exit.

I guess it could also be lateral forces on the tire. I just don't know.

All that I know is that at 7,000 miles, I'll be on my third rear. I wouldn't be bitchin' about 5,000 on a tire.

I don't do many wheelies. I think I've had the wheel up a couple of times. They don't do that much for me, and I want to keep the fork seals in good shape. Maybe wheelies are required to get longer distance out of tires. Is it somewhere in the manual? ;)

I will begin more wheelies today.

"You know the fans were removed on the demo models, or no one would have bought one. BMC mislead us into buying the Uly by hiding the sound of the fan prior to purchase"

NOT so!!! I test rode and purchased my Ulysses on the day that the Buell demo fleet was at the dealership. You should have been there to hear the sound of all of the fans running after they had just took 12 new Buells out for a test ride! The man heading-up the demo fleet had trouble talking over all the fan noise! The fans were installed to cool down the engine after it had reached a certain temperature. The only problem I have with the fan is I don't think it should be running when I'm traveling 70 mph down the highway.

And it doesn't with right side scoop installed.

I think it depends on how quickly you got to 70MPH. ;)

At 70MPH, I couldn't hear a fan if I wanted to.

You must have good ears.

Electric fans are used everywhere nowadays, no one minds it being there, no one minds it running. The noise is so odd sounding and so loud compared to other in the market that it is and will be an issue until Buell stops buying them from the close relative they now do and make a purchase decision on the customer experience.

If it does not bother you, you are absolutely tone deaf and damn lucky in this case, but take a look at the faces around you when its heard.

Remember you do not have to be a mechanic to know when something is wrong, but you must to fix it.

A V-Twin is to be heard, not covered up with a alternating electric tin sound like something caught in a vacuum.

"The only problem I have with the fan is I don't think it should be running when I'm traveling 70 mph down the highway."

Yes, this is why I say it is a customer satisfaction issue and NOT a quality problem.

Loud fans sell scoops.

I think whether the RS^2 actually adds any appreciable benefit to the design or not is still unproven - scientifically anyway. That is, unless Buell already ruled it out. Hmmmm?

Perceived benefit is usually all it takes for some folks. I reckon I am just a much harder sell.

Has anybody run a well-engineered and impartial test on this yet?

My fan was running the few times my bike has been up to 70 mph, legally of course.

Poor engine has to work its butt off totin' me and my gear to those excessive speeds.

The Dopler effect is staining my bags red at the front, blue at the back. They are also appearing to be getting longer.

On the tire wear, I am fatter in my upper body, as such, I can feel an aerodynamic lift when I exceed 50 mph. Maybe this lifting of my fat layers is unloading my tires enough to help gain extra mileage!!!???

Buells are not happy unless they get to point at the sky at least once every ride.

That never ceases to crack me up.

I think they should put a bigger, more powerful fan on the next Uly. I would actually like to get some thrust out of it.

What was?

Teeps is headed in the right direction, actually getting data, and yes the head temps go up. When it's very hot out, (Arizona summer, etc), they get very hot. That's why we don't put a big right side scoop on at the factory. The right side scoop basically stalls some of the air flow across the heads by reducing the low pressure behind them. This causes head temps, then fuel temps to go up, causing real fueling issues at high temps. That's the reality of it. Now if you ride in areas that the temps don't get too high, then the right scoop won't be a problem. We have to make the best all-around configuration however. And if you want to install the 40 thermocouples and massive data logger, and then go run in every environmental condition, then you can have all the data we have too!

Lift vortex generating man tits! Whoda thought! ;)

I didn't know Erik was Italian? (Where the fans come from. ;))

I just want them to last longer that 7000 miles. They do last longer than tires, though!

Or maybe some people just don't care what people around them think about the noises their machines make?

Like FB said, when I'm riding the bike I don't really hear the fan. And when I'm stopped it just doesn't bother me. I've had a few people ask about it, and I tell them. They look a lot less confused after that.

Lowflyer,
The post you asked about was posted a while back(the last time the RSS issue was being debated) by an anon.
Seems they did test a bigger RSS and decided against it.

I have the bigger RSS. I chose it because the air the fan draws from the right side to the rear cylinder is no longer tainted with the high heat from the exhaust pipe.

Cooler air is good.

If I had the ceramic coated fancy exhaust, it might not make that much of a difference.

I dunno, I can't think straight after seeing FB man tits.

In my eyes, that thread/statement was Buell saying "We ruled it out." Which seemed to be what you were looking for.

Agreed. Marketing is the task of making people feel or think they need something without good reason. I think to some extent we're all victim I don't have an RSS but I've got plenty of other products that do little other than make me feel good. : )

True. And I'm one of them. I'm talking about MINE and what I think.

The person you describe is likely not to care what they smell like either or may bring yelling children into a quite public place also.
