What gives? Havent heard a winge in ages regarding the cooling fan... Must admit at 8000 kms i can go riding even in heat & the fan wont come on till i turn the bike off. Unless im giving it a caning! Which is hard not to do most of the time! Have toyed with the idea of cutting an elongated triangular hole in the left one & fabricating a half funnel scoop myself as a cheap fix. Have found that once the fan does cut in, it doesnt usually 'cut out'. Is someone at HQ editing out loud fan nay-sayers?

I have the RSS and love it. It still gets pretty freaking hot in south florida traffic. the fan will come on while stopped, but as soon as I am rolling it will cut off.

The header still gets pretty hot tho.

No rss here, fan still running like there is no tommorrow. I wear earplugs now and it doesn't bother me as much as it used to.

That's because you put one on and it works. Not much to "winge" about.

Not yet.
Yes the fan still runs, at what seems (to me) illogical times, on my Ulysses. The fan is still TOO LOUD(!) when it runs.

However since installing "free flowing muffler", '07 airbox cover and '07 ECM Flash (ecm flash, thanks to Daves.) The fan turns off after a few miles of downhill riding.

I rode To Winterpark Colorado last week, it was a beautiful ride on a week day. Berthoud pass had few cars the clean freshly fallen snow draped the trees and ground smooth and beautiful only broken by a a few fresh tracks from the local Deer, Foxes, Rabbits. A solid blue sky silent by the calmness and all of a sudden by WEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEEKKKKKK sound of my cheesy tinny sounding fan.

The reason you may not have heard about it for a while, why would you keep complaining about something you can do nothing about, It was 29 degrees outside. WWWWWEEEEKKKKKKK.

Consider yourself lucky your driving habits and conditions never warm your engine, The rest of us still have to look the other way when nearby people start staring in curiosity at what the heck is that noise and where is it coming from. WWWWWEEEEKKKKKKK

To RSS here.

The fan doesn't bother me. I wear earplugs, and I like the sound of machinery at work.

I think the sound of an ice cream maker is beautiful! ;)

Some of us ride our bikes above 50 mph.

You probably also get 12,000 miles out of a rear tire, too. ;)

"Some of us ride our bikes above 50 mph."

How do you hang on at those speeds? And my rear tire only lasted 7000 miles!

I like the looks of the RSS, but can't justify the price.

No RSS. If I feel'er heatin' up, I'll hold my hand down there to manually duct some fresh air in.

I enjoy explaining; "it's the electronic inter-cooled turbo, like those found on a helicopter, it simply has to wind down", when ever people ask.

Ft_b ...I still haven't figured out your tire wear problem. Mine is at nearly 12,000 miles and that front 616 is going to go at least another 4,000. I just got my new Sync for the rear and realized I can probably make it to 13,500 before it will have to be installed. The original 616 rear made it to 6,000 and the first rear Sync will have 7,500 on it.

BTW I broke 50 MPH a couple of times today alone! You know that I also run all three bags all of the time, usually with 20+ lbs of stuff in them. Me and my gear top 245 lbs, and the passengers that I ride are around the same.

It has got to be the BLACK coloration......it's the only thing that makes sense......ORANGE is truly showing to excel in this tire issue also!!!

I just dropped off the new rear tire. We'll see what I can get out of this one.

I am going to change my riding style a little bit and run with the higher pressures that the manufacturer recommends.

I don't see how you break 50 MPH with that "drag chute" on.

Toting my luggage is my PERSONAL preference, I thank you.

I can exceed 50 MPH, when it is legal of course, nearly any time I want. All I need to do is to twist the throttle WFO, going "with" the wind, of course, and shift as fast as I can, then.......50...sometimes up to 55 MPH can be had all in one ride!

Man, it is exciting.......you've seen it....remember .....you were behind me.

No extra scoop on mine. I don't like the added unsprung weight and parasitic drag of additional scoops. Not to mention it would be a waste of money for me. My fan rarely comes on while I ride. When it does, it causes me no distress or discomfort.

Anybody have a problem with that?

Do you ride a meat uly? I'm starting to feel you have issues. If it isn't the Austin Powers thing, it is the bald tires thing, and lately.....the meat stuff. Have you been sleeping OK?

That bald tyre thing probably needs some badweb input here. 8000km odo & 20km into my fun... er... commute home & stopped to fill up (another story - usually run 98 octane but could only find 95 last fill & am experiencing a little ping) & the bald back was like molten lava/rubber with like craters in it! And quite gooey to touch! The next 20km im just riding quite gingerly expecting it to blow! Was sitting on 130 (kmh) before pulling into the servo. Once home i checked pressure once cool & all good!?! Nothing to do with fan noise or RSS but im not on drugs, just high on my new, single, buell oriented lifestyle! OK, give it to me! :-)

Why bother getting this scoop thing anyway. I have yet to hear of a single case of a Uly overheating. Even those who have had fan failure have not mentioned the bike going to miss mode to control the temperature.

Seems like a lot of worry for not IMHO. Engines run properly when they are good and hot and the oil is flowing easy.

Thunder,

I believe it's an issue with not liking the fan noise.

The fan either bothers you or it doesn't. For those that don't mind the fan noise, a RSS is unnecessary. For those that do, it's vital.

The performance of the bike is unaffected either way.

Fan noise and illogical (to me) operation is my complaint with it. However, it is not worth $200 plus for the RSS to minimize the irritant.

The whole fan issue (such as we make it) is a simple market quality problem that was either not anticipated, by Buell, or was just blown off. I find it hard to believe that ANYONE at Buell, thought that the current fan characteristics were ok...

"I find it hard to believe that ANYONE at Buell, thought that the current fan characteristics were ok..."

I don't find that hard to believe at all. There are plenty of us who bought the bike knowing full well that the fan is an integral part of the cooling system. As such, most of us knew and accepted the fact that it is bound to operate much of the time when the engine is at operating temperature.

Evidently, there were not enough folks that decided not to buy the bike because of the fan - since they have been using this fan since the first XB and since it is still there in the '07 MY.

The side stand was a quality issue. Fan is a customer satisfaction issue.

Lowflyer,

You know the fans were removed on the demo models, or no one would have bought one. BMC mislead us into buying the Uly by hiding the sound of the fan prior to purchase.

The way I look at it. If the fan SOUND is the biggest thing you have to complain about, Buell built a pretty damn good bike!

It is not about the noise for me. I don't mind the noise because loud fans save lives.

I spent a few years recently in south florida on a hd twincam softail. When you get caught in traffic in the summertime, it gets freaking hot. Rider and passenger both get hot. The rear cylinder always runs hotter than the front, due to lack of airflow at low speeds, and the more air you pick up between lights, the longer it will take to get hot sitting there. Harley Davidson actually installed a fan behind the cowbell horn on police bikes to help keep them cool.

I have been stuck it traffic on the harley in the keys, and the motor went into skip mode. That was kinda scary because we were trying to go up hill on a bridge at the time.

I went as far as to install a jag oil cooler, with two electric fans attached to it. I used a solid state thermostat for a cage to control the fans. Never had a problem overheating again.

As hot as it gets here, you can never have enough air for the rear cylinder.

Hmmmm. We could probably do the same thing with the Uly. Probably be much easier, cause ya wouldn't need a thermostat-as it already has one....

I don't care much about the fan, usually the wind is loud to cover the fan, but 7000 miles for a rear tire??

my has just over 5k and the rear tire is asking to be changed, I'm trying to use during the short rides this winter, but a new one is comming, I wish I had 3k more to go

If somebody asks about the fan, it usually makes a nice topic of conversation for a bit to talk about Bikes and Buell innovation. I enjoy it.

If a friend starts giving me $%^& about the fan noise, I cup my ear towards their bike and say "shhh! Listen! Do you hear that?"

They inevitably say "no, what sound?"

And I respond "It's the sound of the oil in the vicinity of your 900+ degree rear exhaust valve being turned into sludge".

;)

The tire mileage is all in the wrist action! Ft_b says he never wheelies, I do it frequently.

He gets 3000 on a rear, I get 7000. Hmmmmmm......maybe I'm hookin' up and he's spinning.

Naaahhhh......still gotta be because his is black and mine is orange!!!!!
