OK, another question for the Uly gurus out there. I just bought a pair of new PIAA 1100X auxiliary lights ($159.95 shipped - flea bay). I am ready to connect the white power lead from the PIAA light switch - it comes with a crimp connector - but what hot wire should I connect it to under the instrument cluster? It says to connect to a wire that is only on when the high beam is on, but I'd rather be able to turn them on whenever I want, not just when the high beam is on.

TIA!!

Geek,

Are you using a relay or just hooking directly to the power outlet?

If you want them to be on when you want them to be, I would suggest a direct run to the battery using a separate fuse and relay. Attach the relay to the power outlet. The switch is run after the relay.

I would be concerned attaching too many things to the power outlet.

When the outlet comes on, it trips the relay. It therefore uses virtually none of the outlet's wattage capacity leaving it available for vests, accessories, etc.

BTW - light bar? You don't need no stinkin' light bar! I mounted the lights right to the metal instrument nacelle (drilled through for the bolts) - will post more pics when it's all back together.

Thanks for the quick reply, FB. The lights come with a relay, and I've got the lights connected directly to the battery terminals. The switch itself doesn't have a relay that I can tell (but I'm no electrical whiz, obviously ;^).

I thought about connecting to the red wire (assuming that's the correct one - the other is black/yellow) behind the power outlet, but was concerned since I'll need to use the outlet for my heated vest. You think it will be OK to use that one?

- Scott

What kind of vest do you have Scott? I have always wired my plug directly to the battery with an in-line fuse. My power cord on the vest had the on/off switch. The battery connection tucks away nicely under the seat if needed, otherwise is not in the way where it is.

The red wire is the hot wire and will trigger the relay. The switch shouldn't have a separate relay. My light kit had a fused attached to a "cube". If you attach to the red wire you should be fine. The red outlet plug comes on when the key is turned on. It triggers the relay and makes the switch hot. The relay takes virtually no power away from the plug, so you should be fine with your vest.

Thanks, folks! I took a chance before I heard back and connected to the red wire behind the power outlet. Bingo - works great. Man, these things are BRIGHT! I'll take and posts pics when it's all buttoned back up.

Fastfxrs, I have a BMW vest that uses a BMW plug. From the Powerlet site, I bought a BMW-to-cigarette style converter, so I can use the Buell's power outlets.

Oh nice, you can't add pics once you've saved it. Can we have another web site, please?

Let's try this again. Sure would be nice if we could add pics of any size, a la advrider.com. 71K is silly small with today's cameras. I've to save this to 320x240 size to get it under the limit.

It's a shame the pictures are too small to see the lights very well. I like your mounting idea and would like to see it better.

I use photoshop and it has a neat feature called save for web. It allows you to set the size larger and cut the quality back to meet your required size limits. Needless to say though at 71k, when the image is viewable in size the quality gets grainy fast.
