I've got 6000 miles on my front Diablo Strada and about 3000 on the rear. The rear is nearly done, and the front isn't too far from death either. They may last me through the winter when I don't do a lot of riding, but come spring, they'll get replaced. |

That's what's weird. The Azaro front looks great. I think I'll replace the rear and see how many I get from the front. |

For those of you who like the Avons, evidently the Azaros are being phased out in favor of a new tire, the "Storm ST".

Avon is to launch a new sport-touring tire range named Storm-ST, replacing its highly popular Azaro-ST product. Storm-ST has already been tested and approved for fitment to all major motorcycles in conjunction with the well-respected German TUV agency.
Available from Autumn 2006, Storm-ST is available in 15 sizes:
Fronts AV55 - 110/70ZR17, 110/80ZR18, 120/60ZR17, 120/70ZR17, 120/70ZR18, 130/70ZR17
Rears - AV56 150/70ZR17, 150/70ZR18, 160/60ZR17, 160/70ZR17, 160/60ZR18, 170/60ZR17, 180/55ZR17, 190/50ZR17, 200/50ZR17.
Storm-ST is the first tire to include Avon’s new ‘Reactive Footprint’ [RF] technology. Reactive Footprint technology marries Avon’s unique variable belt density [VBD] carcass with Lifetime Profile Engineering [LPE] to produce a footprint which changes size and shape, depending on the bike’s lean angle, for the full life of the tyre.
The result is a contact patch that grows as the bike leans, giving more grip in corners whilst minimizing wear rates when traveling in a straight line.
This technological breakthrough could eliminate the need to use dual compounds and would help solve the uneven wear problems associated with them.
Pete McNally, Avon’s Motorcycle Product Manager explained, "These new technologies combine to make a tyre that doesn’t just handle well when new but also in the last 25% of its life." He continued, "With Storm-ST it’s not just the compound that’s harder in the centre and softer at the edges, it’s the whole tire. We believe we are the first manufacturer to produce a reactive footprint tyre for motorcycles."
In addition to Reactive Footprint technology and Lifetime Profile Engineering, Storm-ST is bristling with an impressive array of advanced features:
A new Super-Rich Silica compound [SRS] delivers sure-footed grip in both wet and dry conditions and allows the tyre to quickly warm up to reach optimum working temperatures.
‘Inverted Front Grooves’ (IFG) on the front tyre, a system pioneered by Avon in the late eighties and only now being adopted by the competition, resists ‘stepped-wear’ and ‘cupping’ to deliver smooth handling throughout the tyre’s life. A further advantage of the IFG configuration is improved wet braking and shorter stopping distances.
The Storm-ST rear benefits from Avon’s Enhanced Aqua Flow [EAF] pattern, first used in sports tyres, which rapidly clears away surface water to further increase confidence in the wet.
Also developed for sports tyres and now built into Storm-ST is Avon’s Advanced Tread Arc Combination [ATAC] profile which varies the tread profile across the tyre for the ultimate in handling and stability, whatever the lean angle. The ATAC profile results in neutral contours, ensuring smoother transition on lean angle changes, and noticeably increases stability, especially under heavy braking
Finally, all components are fine-tuned by Avon’s Enhanced Stability System [ES-System] to deliver a tyre in which the carcass, sidewalls and tread pattern work together to reduce localized flexing within the tyre structure to optimize grip, durability and warm-up capabilities.
Methinks I wood like to try a set of these. |

FtB, I was in Knoxville until Thu AM and then drove to Cincinnati. Started back home today and made it to Gatlinburg and stopped. No time for riding this weekend, but you're close enough that we could do some riding.

I SOOOOOO want to get over to your neck of the woods to ride. We ran over to Maggie Valley last spring and I want to get back over that way. We will definitely need to hook that up. How far is "Pumpkin Central" from you? |

Hey Skinny_Legitimate, It's Pumpkin Center and we're about 90 miles from Asheville.
I passed a black Uly, running two-up, on I-40 today @ 3:15. They were heading west and somewhere just east of Asheville.
We're growing a decent sized group here in the western part of the state,,,,C3 west  We'll still have some decent enough weather to make a Deal's Gap run if ya'll are interested?

I'm in the middle here. I can now say I have enjoyed riding to my left, as most of my riding is to my right and bottom.
Ft_bstrd, thanks for the invite and spirited ride! Now that I've had a day and a half to rest up, I'd like to ask how your video came out.
It was good meeting you, Chris, and Company. I appreciate you're laying back when my arm was cramping. Guess I either have to get younger or start working out so as I might keep up on the whole ride! Sure was great November weather!!

It sucked. It was a first attempt. I've got to work the stabilization a bit more and the view was all wrong. I needed a bit wider view and aim it higher. I got to see a lot of leaves and dirt up close when you head up hill.
I'm glad you made it out.

FB, Javadog, Jlnance, Bigdaddy - One of things I would love to do is a boarder raid around Deals Gap. Not to hijack this thread but if the weather holds I would love to make one more pass at the Dragon this year. We need to start a  west rides like we have for the Jacksonville rides. Maybe get the guys from Roanoke and South Carolina in on the action.
On topic - I got about 3700-4200 miles out of the D616 rears and replace the front at just over 8000 with some life left. I got 5000 miles out of the Strada rear and still have the front tire in the barn. The Road Attacks have 1500 miles on them and they are still holding their shape. i am guess they will do better than the D616, and may rival the Stradas. Best tire life I have been able to get was out of a Dunlop D205 9,000 miles Front and 5700 miles rear. They had great grip in all conditions but are very neutral on center. Not necessary a bad trait on a Uly with its wide bars and reactive geometry. I've said it before but I did not like the grip of the Stradas. Not bad, but second worse tire I've owned next to the K505 Bias-ply tires I had on my Old CB750. Syncs or MT-60s I believe are next for the Uly and I still run D205s on the M2.
As for Horse Jockey - well Big Daddy has me beat, but FB I believe I am a few inches shorter than you but weigh about the same so I guess that makes me a...

I'm going to try some Avons one of these days -- I've been saying that for a few years Crusty has nothing but good things to say about them and he puts in some mileage.
The Uly is the first bike I've owned that fits right off the stealership's floor -- absolutely love the ergos.
Border raid? I'm in and we'll have plenty of good days prior to January. It'd be a good weekend if we could catch up with Ft_B and crew. I'd need some heads up so I can do it on the weekend the wife's on call

"Fits" is right.
Went to see the new 1200R BMW yesterday, the two they had looked awesome.
Threw a leg over one and it felt... weird... and fat. I expected the lean forward to the bars but the wrist angle was goofy.
My Uly is just perfect for me, even with the slightly lower '07 seat.
About another 500 miles and I'll be installing the Syncs I have in the garage, might do the front sooner though, the 616 at almost 13k has developed some pretty good ratchet-blocks! |

It's a bit of a long story that I can't completely cover now...but it has to do with overcoming G forces based on related speed, corner sweep angle, bank angle, tire slip angle, variants of each and mostly resistance to the forces gravity and toting your ft_bstrd ass around!!

The only work I had done at Stricks was a tire change. A couple of their guys looked at a brake problem I had and did not notice that one of my rear brake shoes had fallen off and left the metal holder to chew up my rear brake rotor. No worries, still had the front.I spoke with Mary Strick recently and they said they were going to limit their future service to common maintenance jobs like oil changes.I'm going to have to stop in there and find out what they are really
doing now that they let their full time mechanics go. |
