Are the headlights disconnected from the battery when the starter is engaged? Or does the fact the lights go out when the bike is started just reflect the voltage drop caused by the starter load?

My headlights are directly wired to the battery and they don't dim at all when starting, so my guess would be that they dim by design to reduce drag on the battery during starting.

I'm confused. We both have Ulys right? So if your lights don't dim, mine shouldn't dim. And if yours are wired to the battery mine are as well.

Given mine do dim (actually go out) and the bike doesn't start as well as it used to, I'm thinking my battery is dying.

Sounds like a battery going bad, or a bad connection.

Check your battery terminals and the ground connection to the frame.

The headlight(s) DO turn off when cranking the starter.

As Windrider pointed out, it's true that Mr. Bstrd has modified his headlight circuit.

hey Jinance, my lights dim also and the starter on my uly seems to not not want to turn her over easily either. I naturally thought that the battery was weak. I would put it on the trickle/float charger and it stopped charging within 10 -15 min. I think that it is just that between the size of the engine and the compression level, the starter has a hard time cranking it over. well thats my guess anyhow. T3

Thanks guys

Perhaps it's the cold weather making it more difficult to turn over.

20W-50 is not lightweight oil when it is cold.

See this thread "battery takes a crap", for my battery experience.

Jlnance,

Every time my bike has been slow to turn over it was the battery connections.

I've never had a bike that I had to keep tightening up the connections so often.

It would help if I used some loctite, but It's so easy to put a wrench on them about once a month.
