Just wondering if there were any other Uly's out there with some miles on them seeing the the leak yet. 10K on mine, and front and back are starting to go. The tech that did my 10k service said something like "yeah, that's the way it is with these motors." and didn't suggest or offer to change the gaskets. | ||

Buellysses, The "known" rocker box gasket problems were confined (AFAIK) to the tube-framed bikes. The gasket type was changed from paper to coated metal on the XB's and these gaskets have been retrofitted to just about all the older bikes on the highway. They seem to be pretty leak proof. Can't imagine why yours would be leaking so soon. A couple of guys here have stated the best thing you can do to take care of these engines (including avoiding leaks) is to warm them up thoroughly before stressing them. If you like to "fire it up and GO", that may be a contributing factor to the leakage. | ||

I concur with Whodom about the need to fully warm up the engine before "jumping" on them. There are a lot of gasket surfaces and the engine "grows" as it warms up. Once fully warmed up all seals-gaskets should then be able to do their job. This is an issue with Harley Big Twins. Unless fully warmed up before running engine hard they can develop cylinder base gasket leaks. David | ||

Thanks folks. I never fire up and go, I always warm up, but perhaps not always to a full warm up. So if this is not a current 'known' issue for the XB's, then perhaps I do have a warranty-able problem. Follow up then: I know ambient temperature is a primary consideration here, but how long are folks taking to warm up their bikes?? | ||

When I first crank it before riding, I always let my bike run 2-5 minutes before getting on. THEN I take it easy for the first 5 or so miles. THEN I feel free to hammer it as necessary. BadWebber Tramp has the highest mileage Buell I'm aware of (100K+ miles) and he's a big proponent of doing this. Hugh | ||

I warm it up until the tank runs dry. Then I shove the bike to the gas station and fill her up. Then I am good to go!  (A little humor and a lot of info, BAD WEB at it's best!) | ||

Oil leaks should be covered under warranty. Have em fix it. | ||

I have a front rocker box leak (front RH corner) at 5K miles, always been warmed up before hammering, something's wrong, the Lightning never leaked. It will have to be a warranty job. Hope they don't have to rotate the motor to do it. |
