Just got the 1000mi service done. I had the dealer do it cause they said they would do it for free. Cool. Well not so. Got home and checked the oil and it is above the full mark. I had changed the oil twice before the service cause I was flogging the thing and felt bad and went by the two and a half quart method. Both times my oil level after a fresh change and a warm up ride was ~1/4 over fill line. So........ the question is.... Do I need to drain it and fill it to the prescribed 2 1/2 quarts??? Will it cause long or short term problems if I leave it??? I had a car once that down the road started leaking from every possible seal because of a 4000 mile trip with oil a inch over full on the dip stick. Thanks for the help. I must say though the bike runs great other than the oil thing.... |

Just go to a local vet and get a giant 60cc syringe. With that and some 1/4 tubing you can easily suck out the extra. I'm surprised your bike is full with 2.5 qts. Mine usually takes 2.75 to get it to the middle mark. |

You can extract the extra oil from the fill hole with a turkey baster or infant's snot sucker. (Message edited by teeps on September 02, 2006) |

Ah good idea. I will do that. My bike was not full with 2.5 quarts just a quarter above the fill. I was leery of adding more if that was all the manual said it should take. *shrug* |

I had the same problem at my 1k service and from when I bought it. Must be a harley thing. I had many people here at bad web tell me that it was not that bad. I took a 60cc syringe and removed the excess oil both times, needless to say there was lots of foul language. |

It's a holding tank, not in the sump, if it didn't allow room for temp variations or it was the sump too much oil would be harmful! |

"I'm surprised your bike is full with 2.5 qts. Mine usually takes 2.75 to get it to the middle mark." And here I thought I had the oddball. 2.5 quarts doesn't even make the add line for me. 2.75 usually does get me close to middle though. If you hae a mity-vac, it will suck out the overage quite fast and easy too. Joel |

I just went to the kitchen and got the turkey baster to remove the excess oil. My wife won't notice it missing until Thanksgiving, and I can probably get a new on for a buck from Wal-mart. |

Thanks for the responses guys I got a snot sucker and took the excess out. ~ 6-8 oz over filled. I wrote the dealer a email stating my two issues with the service. My idle was also set at like 900 instead of 1050-1150 rpm. Not huge things just wanted them to know when their techs are not actually reading the dang service manual. ps I LOVE MY ULY |
