Sent my Uly in for 5k service, kickstand recall, ping/poor fuel mileage. Got a call about my clutch cable being cracked and frayed. Had not heard of this on this board. Gonna be a week of no Uly! Anyone else had any problems with a clutch cable going bad?

Hey Riderbob, another SoCA Uly rider with a pinging bike these days.

My dealer assured me, after I requested they check into it at the 1k service, that it was "normal" for a Buell and to run it at higher rpms.

Until in July, when it pinged so badly all the way to ID I brought it in to the local dealer where they found it to be 5 deg too advanced!

Clutch cable frayed, did they say where?

Every few hundred miles my clutch lever gets sticky, this acts and feels like a frayed cable but it's actually the ferrule at the cable end at the clutch lever. A drop of lube in there (I use CLP) works great.

Just replaced my throttle cable.

There was only one strand left at the throttle body, all other strands were broken, frayed and caused the throttle to not want to close. Rode it home about 75 miles like that. Not a enjoyable ride.

I have heard of the clutch cables breaking also. I lube mine often,(every oil change) and it's been OK for 25,000 miles. Not so for the throttle. It's more diffcult to lube.

no freyed cable here but the plastic sheathing has worn to the metal casing.
this knawed into my frame right above the vin number.. scarry huh? nice half inch notch in the frame... buell needs a full side pic of my bike to make sure i haven't altered it in any way... i hope my bumpersticker on the saddle bag will not black list me again.

Hello XBimmer,

Which dealership did you use?

I took mine to Camarillo for the 1k service and complained about the pinging, asked them to check the timing.

Service Mgr. told me "it couldn't be adjusted".

Of course I knew that static timing could be changed but have never had much luck arguing with Service Dept. Mgr's so I said "okay".

Perhaps their tune has changed?

I don't get constant pinging but I get some on every ride. I would prefer a bike that would run 87 octane without pinging (91 octane is not always available).

Oh well, I still am enjoying my Ulysses immensely. Just clicked past 5k. Not bad considering I only ride weekends, it's less than a year old and it has to fight for riding time with my dirt bike.... ; )

Come up to SB some time and give me a holler.

Hey Jim_sb, Camarillo eliminated themselves from the running when I was checking out Uly's and the salesman told me he'd get the keys to fire one up for me and never came back.

I drove right over to Moorpark and arranged a test ride for that Saturday, owned a School Bus by Wed.

Overall the attitude at Moorpark is much better among the employees. I like most of them. I have a couple of service issues going on here but they know that I expect what I deserve as a loyal customer is satisfaction.

Funny difference between the two dealers, they're both owned by the same guy...

LOL!

Yeah, I knew they had the same ownership.

I just wish I objectively knew if I had "bad" pinging or "it's no big deal" pinging.

I usually wear ear plugs when I ride but I try to do a short ride a few times per month without ear plugs so I can really hear what's happening down there...

Thanks for the input folks. I'm currently using Glendale. However as of yet I ain't "loyal." Not sure where the cable is actually failing at, all I know is I got a call. Anyway I'll see what the story is on pinging, I brought my baby in at 3k because the pinging had got so bad.
thnks again friends
