Tim you lucky SOB! Let us know what you think.

I can't afford any upgrades right now - but I'm thinking ECM, filter and Drummer or Spec OPS when I can.

I have owned six Buells with my current - 2006 Uly. All of my Buells have had "Race Kits" or equivalent(s) installed from day one. Sad to see this upgrade option going away from Buell. Get them while you can!

BTW - My Uly has approximately 1600 miles on the clock and runs flawlessly!

What is the gas mileage with the race kit?

Hmmm, me thinks a Special OPS or Drummer is in my future. My two 9's lost too much bottom end with the full race kit. Had that off-idle stumble just like the Uly does from stock. Plenty of top end there for me and I don't want the fuel mileage to suffer...just want some grunt and a better sound.

My mileage ranges from high forties to mid 50's, depending on speed and riding conditions.

My Uly has a Race Kit, and the best I've seen is 53mpg (I ride fairly aggressively). Worst I've seen has been 43mpg.

Wife called, just got two boxes from Buell of Appleton....RACE KIT is HERE. Does installing the race kit void the warentee for the bike?

Hey Chad, did you take the "snorkel" out of the air box? You didn't mention it in your write up awhile back (but as you noted, you got lazy and stopped taking pics). If I'm reading them correctly, the directions say to remove it. Does that make any sense?

Ike and Kuud, I was pouring over pages of data from Al Lighton, re: the exhaust shootout, when Dave called about the race kit. I think "plan B" would have been (and who knows....someday.) the SSDrummer (I was even going to stop by K-D Fab on the way to Myrtle Beech). I will let you guys know how it turns out. The data (with the whole race kit) shows a mid-range dip, but Hargis (and many others) haven't mentioned that they feel any dip. We will see.

Hey Ike, what's up with your waterproofing?

I didn't mod the airbox in any way. I don't think I have a "snorkel". My airbox breaths through the right side via some slots in the airbox.

I have not noticed any dip in the power. If you look at the power curves, it looks like a bigger dip than it is. It's probably not going to be noticed by my amateur butt dyno.

All I know is that my bike simply ran "better" after the Race Kit. Smoother, revved faster, and had better throttle response. I didn't, however, notice it being any faster, though I'm sure it is.

Waterproofing is holding up so far and I've ridden in some pretty serious downpours for up to 3 hours at a time.

Talked to Dave at Cerini's a couple weeks back and Buell tech services told him to keep an eye out for that problem (day late and a dollar short). Guess I'm not the only one that's had it happen.

The 06' models do not have a snorkel. Only the pre 06' models had them. It's a rubber piece that fit down through the air inlet that went through the frame into the LH air scoop. They added a good 10hp, sorry you don't have one.

I thought they were talking about the rubber stack-looking-thing (sorry for the techno. jargin) in the inside/ center of the air cleaner.

I will disregard. Thanks.

Ok, so what does the race kit cost if you can find it and what happens to the valve servo?

$650'ish for all three pieces if you pay retail and Daves can't hook you up, and the servo goes away. Of course the servo is supposed to enhance low RPM power, but based ho easy mine lofts the wheel now that it's wearing the race kit, trust me, you'll NEVER miss the servo

I guess the servo question that I had in mind was the fact that the engine light may or may not come on - one servo. Correct?

The race ECM does not "look" for a servo valve, so it does not activate the check engine light.

OK, I took my time with the install and had no problems at all. However, are those muffler straps the best way to mount that thing? A slight pain in the arse! They are light though, can't argue with that.

Anyhoo;

I take the bike down to the dealer (as DaveS suggested, with muffler installed and parts and tools in hand, swap out the ECM and filter and go inside.) I tell the girl at the service counter that I need a TPS reset and why and she gets a funny look on her face.
(me)Is there a problem?
(her)Did we install that?
(me)No I did, but I need you guys to do the TPS reset.
(her)Oh..
(me)What's the problem?
(her)Oh, nothing, but we can't warranty the work if we didn't do it.
(me)I have complete faith in the guy who installed it, I'm not worried about any warranty.
(her)We don't care if people do their own work but if there's a problem we aren't going to pay for it.
(me)look, I trust this guy with the life of my children, I understand that you can't warranty the install, I just need a TPS reset.
(her)oh, ok.
(me)

So, they did the TPS reset. The tech. tells me "your going to notice an abrupt drop off of the power on the upper end. It's an inherent problem with Buell race kits". Not wanting to get into an fight or long drawn out debate, I said "oh, ok", and pay the $55.
I like this place but what is going on? First the whole stupid conversation with the service girl, then the tech. who obviously is misinformed (if not worse).

I, like all of the rest who have the race kit or the like, abso-f*!$@^$%-toutly LOVE IT!!!!!!!!! What a kick in the pants. This thing is great. How can something so simple totally make a great bike even greater? If you don't already have the race ECM and one of the after market mufflers, don't wait any longer. You'll love it!

"The tech. tells me "your going to notice an abrupt drop off of the power on the upper end."Tell him yes this is true, it's called the rev limiter.

From a strength and stress stand point the straps are a GREAT way to mount the muffler

Sorry to hijack this thread:

Just installed my American Sportbike - open air box conversion kit to compliment the Buell Race Kit installed when my Uly was new. All I can say is this is a perfect addition to the Race Kit. A little more intake noise - which is very cool, IMO, but definately smooths things out the entire RPM range and throttle response is noticiably better through out. My BUTT Dyno says a few more ponies also.

Thanks Al.

Simple explanation. The girl at the counter is an idiot. The tech is also an idiot. It's typical at stealerships in California.

I got plenty of power from the moment I lay my hand on the throttle all the way till I bounce off the limiter. Love my race kit.

WOW!!! Just put the Race ECU on today and had the TPS reset done. Very noticeable improvement right off the bottom with my Drummer. I was very surprised how much it clears up the midrange. Either that or I have been riding my KLR 650 too much

Well worth the money.

Well I just ordered the last race kit Daves at Appleton had. Thanks Dave!

Sorry folks, I got the bug and jumped. I can reset my own TPS using the VDSTS software so now I'm just in wait mode till it gets here.

I have 9K miles on the bike since last August and I'm loving the bike more all the time. I'll have to admit that I really don't need more performance but having that little extra is always more fun!
