Demo'd a Uly last Saturday. This is my opinion on the test ride.

Seating position excellent.

Transmission shifting excellent. Clutch feel excellent.

Fuel injection left something to be desired. It seemed to have a hesitation or lag when accelerating. Is this common with the FI engines?

Highway riding felt solid at speed. Bike did not feel top heavy at any speed. I lost some confidence in a couple of corners. I ride a Cyclone and it would have went though the corners with no problem. I am not an agressive rider and was riding even less agressive since I was not used to the bike. The salesman did have the suspension set up for my weight before the ride.

In all I liked the Uly but I don't think I would want to give up my Cyclone to get one.

The Uly had a tall windshield on it. It buffeted my helmet so much by the end of the ride I was starting to get a headache. The saleman agreed that for his and my height the shorter windshield would be better.

Thanks to Dustin at Vallejo HD for the test ride, and sling bag.

Am I being to critical for a thirty minute Demo?

No; but then, your opinion and a buck fifty will get you a tall coffee at Starbucks, it is what it is...
However, I do agree, the F.I. (calibration?) on this bike does need some work, in my opinion.

A couple of questions come to mind-was the bike new? Less than 500 miles on it? I have noticed with mine as it breaks in, it runs MUCH better. Also, was it a California spec bike? Leaner jetting...

If you buy the coffee it won't even cost me the $1.50. Thanks for the FI comment, at least I'm not the only one.

Bike had 3500 miles or so, it is Vallejo's demo bike. Probably the one FMJ dropped when it was new. Yes it was a California smog special.

Cheers Hacksaw,

Don't let that F.I. hickup stop you from buying a Ulysses. This minor bother will likely get worked out in time.

I like my Cyclone. I was looking at the Uly for carrying a passenger(wife) that is not comfortable on the Cyclone. I don't know without taking her for a ride on the Uly if she would be more comfortable or not. If I was really impressed by the Uly I wouldn't let the FI bother me. I would take the Uly over the Sportster that is setting in my garage.

Does anybody know of any Uly rentals available?

Hacksaw - The fuel injection has quirks.

With regard to the wife, I say this in all seriousness. If you don't want to buy the Uly, do not let her testride it. She will love it.

I used to have an M2, and M2NC still does. My g/f and his wife love the Ulys in comparison to the M2s.

You get used to the 'tip-in' surge in the fuel-injection system, but everyone's F.I. systems have the same problem to some degree. If they could only come up with a workable mechanical accelerator pump for EFI systems, the problem would cease.

In the last two weekends I rode basically the same ride. One with the wife on the M2 and the other with my daughter on the Uly. After a very fun ride with the wife we get home and I say, "the old M2 (almost 43,000 miles) still is a great bike." She answers, "Yeah, but it's not the Ulysses." as she rub her back side and that with the Corbin seat. The Uly actually rides better two up. The seat was designed for all day comfort and the wife and daughter prefer it to the M2 and every other bike they have ridden. Like Jim said, don't let the wife ride it until you are ready to buy it.

As for the throttle, if your M2 is like mine the throttle response is excellent and the Uly felt a little artificial. The M2 throttle response is hard to beat, but in time you get use to the Uly and it does pay off. The M2 got 55mpg on the first trip and the Uly got 59mpg on the second. Also, the Uly does have more power and as the revs climb the bike does show considerable more muscle.

Thanks for the insight everyone, for now I think I will wait until the new bikes come out next month just to see of there are any changes.

"Yeah, but it's not the Ulysses."

The wife here - they have hit the nail on the head. While I like the M2, I love the Uly. I'm even giving consideration to my first long trip this Sept to participate in the BRATPAC trip in western NC.

Best of luck on your decision and as the guys have said, take your wife on the test ride. It sold me. Of course this was after a 40 mile ride to the dealership 2-up on a Sportster! I think it was a set-up.

Reno H-D & Buell - Reno, NV just added a Uly to their rental fleet.

Yeah, that was fun for everyone involved! Got to know better that I'd ever thought I would LOL!!!

It didn't help that the Sportster had one of those 'wonderful' Badlander seats on it. My tailbone still aches when I even look at that seat hanging in the barn!

Kristi, I'll throw the pegs on the back of the Lightning if you ever need a reminder.

I'm done hi-jacking

Defector-Director out.

Took wife for ride today on Cyclone, she made it about 40 minutes before we had to stop. I think I will set up another Demo to take her and see how she is after 30 minutes on the Uly.

Thanks Ulywife, Bud, and Ayden.
