Finally picked up my Uly this weekend! I wanted to thank all on this board for helping me make my decision to buy, and to know the issues to expect. I will not repeat the issues that have been so well covered, but will give *my* hilites. - It fits me perfectly - 6'3/240. I'm in heaven. Do think I need a bigger wind screen. - I am *really* glad I knew about the loudness of the fan. As it was, when it first came on my first thought was that I had lost a bearing. - Favorite Thing - Handling! Completely neutral and easy. Found myself doubling the speed limit on the twisties without drama or technique. Very big change from Harley BT's I've been riding for 10 years. - Least Favorite Thing - Switch Gear. I would love to have the option to use Sporty controls. Will take some getting used to. Would like self-canceling turn signals too. Thanks again to all and rise safe! fubar | ||

Fubar, I agree totally with the switchgear comment. Somehow, I would like the controls to be more substantial. I'm not much of a Harley nut, but I do like their switchgear. It's big and burly and somewhat BMWish. The self-canceling signals would be nice. Paul | ||

Having to go back and forth from the Harley to the Buell is a minor pain. Being used to the Harley with the self cancelling signals I would have to agree that Buell needs to go this route. | ||

Ergonomic studies show that the 7/8" grip is more comfortable for the majority of riders. HD has stuck with the 1" controls because HD makes their own market so to speak. Having ridden thousands of miles with both types I greatly prefer the 7/8" controls, non-self-cancelling switch gear, etc. which Buell uses now. It's most noticeable in terms of reduced fatigue on a 500+ mile day riding. If you really want 1" controls you can sleeve your 7/8" bars with a piece of split PVC tubing and mount up HD controls. You'll have to do some wiring of course which is the only hard part. Not sure how that effects the non-canceling feature of the turn signals - I had heard that it was somehow wired to the speedometer/odometer - not sure though. Regards, Jim in Santa Barbara | ||

Too funny. I prefer Buell's controls as they are relatively standard among sport bikes. I really get messed up when I switch to my Wide Glide and really get the laughs when I try to start the bike with the right turn signal switch.  | ||

I like the 7/8" bars and I really don't need the self cancelling turn signals, but the overall size of the switchgear, the little switches that you have to hit with your thumbs just seems small and puny. I'd go with something like the ones on a modern sportbike like the ZZR or a CBR1000RR. The Buell switches just don't feel and look as substantial as the rest of the bike. Paul | ||

Fubar - Congratulations on the Uly! When I first got my XB9R I wondered about the switch gear too. The others I was used to seemed more substantial at first. But now a year and 12,774 miles later I actual like them more. They are holding up great too, so my fears seem unjustified. Also, I have learned they only require a light touch. I have gotten used to that... Now I prefer them over my R1 and my GL1800 Goldwing PS - I have the Buell touring grips on mine, which are larger than stock.
