Have had several people ask me, but since I'm a a bit of noob, don't know the answer. What is the difference between a sportster engine and a buell engine. I assume fuel injection is one difference. Any others? |

Hmmm, here are some I know: Different crankcases Different clutch cover Different cam cover Different cams (not just lobes, but different rotation direction) Different crankshaft Different lifters Different clutch Different pistons Different rods |

Mr. Imonabuss, thats true for the XB's. But it wasn't so true for the tube framers, now was it ? And what about the Blast ? Doesn't the P3 use a few Sportster bits inside ? Bobby |

Thanks Idude, That's what I was looking for. I'm interested in the XBs at this point. So the engine appears to be new except for the cylinders? Is that right? Paul |

Cylinders are same-same. Entire intake tract and exhaust tract are different too. |

There are similarities. But, the statement "it's a Sportster engine" has long been inaccurate. I end most arguments by simply asking the unknowing "try putting a Sportster engine in a Buell or a Buell engine in a Sportster". Think of a Buell motor as a Sportster that went to M.I.T. Actually, it kinda did.....Berkely.

Between a sportster engine and a Buell engine. Though I doubt its as an official policy, what seems to happen is that changes to the Sportster engine get tried out on the Buells and then migrated back to the Sportster. The Buell engine is no longer a Sportster engine. But the Sportster engine isn't either. |

Considering the information relayed by the buss man, that would seem a rather fruitless scenario. |

"What Makes a Buell?" The people who build them and the people that ride them. |

Hey! This means that we won't have to sit around and watch some idiot part out a Buell to build a Mutated Butthead rigid framed chopper. It really bugs me to see some jerk take a bike that handles and stops and turn it into a wobbling, unsuspended piece of junk. It's like having a solid gold pecker. It's bright & shiny, and it cost a lot to make, but it doesn't work nearly as good as the real thing. |

What makes a Buell is clever marketing that evokes brand loyalty so blinding that it makes weak-minded people ridiculously sensitive to what other people do with their bikes. |

the problem is that normal people still "see" a sportster "style" engine. And many sportster parts are still used. Gaskets, oil filters, bolts, covers, Whats makes a Buell is Buell. Improved everything. Which is why when I had an 883 its was smarter to sell it and upgrade to a s1w. Better heads, cams, exhaust, forks, frame, brakes, and Looks. |

Sorry Ryker77, I am not a "normal" person and I do more than see. My eyes and my butt tells me that yes the Buell engine/trans is very much based on the Sportster engine/trans. In fact, the whole bike reminds me of my past Sportsters. But this is a good thing because I feel the XBs are models of Sportsters that have been waiting for years to be let out of the box! Good job, Erik! Ps: for all of you who feel a need to comment on my opinion. It's ok, we all have one,but do not show me yours! |

"normal" is based on the thousands of sportster sold since the 50's. Buell makes up only a very small fraction when compared to Sportster sales, even smalle when compared to total HD sales. And probably even smaller when compared to sportbike sales. buells are not a "normal" bike when based on the number sold. I've owned a s1w and now an x1. A uly is probably in the future or hopefully a new version of a s3t. |

Well Guys it's my understanding that Opto bought his Buell because he owned a Sportie for years and felt confident about the reliability of the engine. Plus the comfort zone of knowing something about the engine if he had to work on it. I know he raved on about the differences, but to me he bought it because he just plain had to have one. Then he wanted an off road bike, nothing he looked at made him smile. He even talked about putting dirt tires on Bindy Buell then along came Uly Oh Dragon, as the Aussie's say "Come in Spinner" talk about leading with your chin did you truly think you would get away with a statement like that! Dragon is not normal, how about you tell us all something we did'nt know |

Snub, no problem, always a pleasure! And the part about leaving myself open, I work with a safety net. I tell everyone my real name is TIM HOLMES! And guess what? They buy it! PS: when are you coming to the craziness in OHIO? Check out GOBUELLRIDERS.COM Cleveland IMS. |

Oh Bindy, you do not know the half of it! I would tell you but I cut a deal and I have told you too much already. Do not bother checking, the file has been sealed by a governing body. I drive an ORANGE Buell so to draw attention away from myself! PS: Bindy, if you do check, look under my real name (Tim Holmes) and do not be scared by what you find. I can explain! Dragon.. Dragon.. Dragon only because for some strange reason I like you, I feel I should let you know, one does not ride a Buell to draw attention away from oneself orange or otherwise. Perhaps a scooter, but NOT I repeat NOT a Buell! |

Crusty, we used to be sooooo close, now what am I suposed to do with you? Bindy, If I had a penny for everytime I heard that one I wouldn't have to work anymore. As for the "..but knew that had to be wrong" comment, have you been talking to my wife? Slayer, Another thread hijacked. Put another notch on your clutch lever. |

Slayer, The wife and I went to the DC IMS. It was a bit of a disappointment but we had a lot of fun anyway. We went to the Cleveland show a couple of years ago and had a good time. |

Imonabuss, Are you sure about the cam rotation direction? If they don't rotate in the same direction as Sportster cams, that would mean the engine would be running backwards. Bob |

Bob, Consider that maybe the drive gear engages a different cam, like say the front cylinder intake cam instead of the rear cylinder intake cam? |
