I just switched to all synthetic and my bike feels better than ever. I'm sorry but I don't care what kind of additive package you put into a dino oil it's not going to match any full synthetic in film strength or in longevity. Oh, and to all "the sky is falling crowd" who may jump in, my clutch is doing great. Until someone can speak/write intelligently on the Formula+ vs. Synthetic debate I'm sticking with what I know. Synthetics are better in just about any way but cost.

Until someone can speak/write intelligently on the Formula+ vs. Synthetic debate I'm sticking with what I know.

The factory recommends Formula+. The engineers there spent years studying this stuff, and they work just as hard as I do and are at least as dedicated as I am (probably more).
I bet if I take their suggestions, my tranny and clutch will last a long time and the bike will shift beautifully.
Now, if you want to know what pattern to use when drilling a 14 foot diameter tunnel in Basalt, my opinion is as good as anybody else's and better than most.

My clutch was grabby in first gear with the Syn3, and not with the Formula+. I had to be very deliberate with the clutch release to get it to not grab. Now this could have been related to the level of fluid in the primary case, I didn't check it before I changed fluid, and the dealer put in the Syn3. The other thing I noticed was a low pulsing hum at certain speeds. This occurred consistently for most of a 1k ride. I thought it might be the tires, but it went away as soon as I switched.

Just my experience, take it for what you will.

IMHO, clutches typically don't benefit from synthetic oil. The tranny might, but there isn't the amount of heat in a tranny that there is in an engine, and that's where the benefits of synthetic really kick in. Dino in the tranny should be fine, but as soon as my bike hits 3000 miles, I'll be going to synthetic engine oil and not looking back.

The only advantage to using syn in the tranny is for cold weather operation. Engine will turn over easier in clod weather if you have syn in the tranny. Having said that I am sticking with the formula + oil in my transmission. I will change to Synthetic in my engine when my second oil change is due.

I have come to the conclusion that dealers should only be listened to if they have a bible in their right hand and the relevant service manual in the other lol. Plus it would be of some comfort if they could show me proof that they are able to read. This is sarcasm

Formula + is not synthetic, and as I posted earlier we switched Branebagger's bike back to Formula + during his 5K service and we discussed it with our District Service Rep. who just bought a new ULY. He stated that there is some confusion on this issue and has advised those concerned. He believes we should use the recommend oil F+ until there is a clarifying statement from the motor company. I have now heard Red Line following their testing of F+ and they do not have a recommendation at this time. They do believe that RL75/90 might be too slippery for the new clutches. We are going to do some testing for them and I will keep all informed. ... Terry

my bike ran like a champ all the way back from california to ny in 2 1/2 days and 100+ through more than a few states

When I went to the dealer to pick up fluids for my '06 XB9SX's first service, the parts guy just about slapped my hand when I went to grab the Formula+. He insisted that the Sport-Trans was what I needed... I think I'll take it back and make the switch after reading all this. What's the diff anyway?
