CDAllen,

Are you sure Dave was not referring to the bracketry? One set of bracketry for all three and another different set for only the side bags? Meaning one would need to have the side bag bracketry installed in order to mount the trunk?

The side bag brackets bolt on independent of the tail box brackets. I bought the the set so I don't think it matters which option you buy, the brackets would still be the same.

The side brackets bolt on with two bolts under each side of the tail and one bolt to the inside of the passenger peg.

The tail box bolts on with two bolts under the grab rails and an extra bracket that bolts on under and through the tail into the seat latch.

If I get some time, I will take some pics and post here for everybody to see.

Any drilling required?

No drilling needed.
All the brackets use existing bolt holes in the tail and there are pre-drilled and tapped holes in the underside of the grab rails and insides of the passenger pegs.
Installation only takes about 1/2 hour and that's taking your time doing it.

Does the cross bracket that Bienhoabob has his hand on in the top pic come with the side cases or did he get that for a top box, I've ordered the side box set and that cross bracket would be handy to tie a sleeping roll on!

PS the side cases hold about 42 litres each and the top box 50 according to the OEM's website (H&B)

Brat,
The brace I have my hand on is the support for the top case. I brought the whole setup from the dealer. (side & top) Yes, it does make a good luggage rack when the top case is off. I'm thinking of installing a fuel cell on it, if/when I do some more IronButt events. Don't know if you can only buy the support without the case.

Thanks Bob, The side cases here retail for au$1,700 for the pair, the top box is au$800

As we use a back pack (do rock climbing, treking as well) I'm not getting the top box, the bracket for it looks like it adds strength to the whole structure, is it ok without, we'll be doing some tough miles!

Wow what does Buell have against Australians. My bags here in Canada were only $1420.00 for the 3 bags and our dollar is worth only slightly more than yours. Thats the installed price too.

I didn't pay retail but it get's worse, the XB12X retails here for au$18,400 plus on road costs, and with a shortage of bikes there's no discounts happening, the dealer's done the right thing with the options though!

I saw where the top case is now available separately as 92031-06Y, but with a caveat. The purchase has to be approved by a tech as it is for replacement purposes only.

I personally, would like just the top case with it's own bracket/mounts. I guess I'm SOL, or am I missing something?

Cheers, Alan
