Hi all, going to pick up my new Uly here in a couple of minutes. Drove one a few weeks back and liked it enough to stay in the Buell fold. Until this bike they didn't have anything I was really ready to spring for. Looks like things do change around here if you wait long enough. Looking forward to the rest of the poker runs scheduled for this year. We only have 2 months of good riding left so we have to use it to the best of our ability. I am going to have a tear for the 02 M2L when I leave her at the shop. She has been a very good bike and has never left me stranded, not one single time. Put 25000kms on her in the last few years. I hope someone who will love her like I did purchases her and gives her a good home.

Wow what a difference from the M2. 2 up riding is incredible. Hard to believe it is the same make of bike. Just that much difference. I still think the M2 has more torque particularly in the lower RPM area. Uly is almost too quiet also. Fan is a bit of a surprise as it is on quite a bit. Makes me wonder how hot the M2 was getting as it didn't have a fan.

Check engine light came on 3 times last night. The one I drove at the demo ride also had the check engine light on. Buell may have a problem with the engine control I hope they get it fixed quickly.

I'll keep you all informed as it gets used more.

Dave/T'Box,
How about a passenger's report if you have time to transcribe it or can get your passenger to key in their own report from a passenger point of view. Also, when the passenger was on, was the beaver tail up as a backrest or back flat as a luggage rack? And if upright did the passenger feel it at all and did the passenger feel it gave enough comfort or security to override any feelings of falling off?

Just curious about this from a passenger point of view, thanks. Pretty sure it won't compare to a RoadKing as far as passenger comfort goes, just want a real world non-Buell affiliated passenger commentary on it.

Linda says the backrest is very secure feeling. She also says there is so much room on the back seat she can't believe it. As far as how good it feels, she says it has more room back there than the Ultra Classic she has been on. The ride quality with 2 up is unbelieveable. Very nice ride and bumps are a thing of the past.

This is not good news, looks like I may have to do a two-up test ride on one. Dang, was getting my heart all set for an RK too. Hmmm, maybe I'll go back and revisit the 60's DuoGlide with the solo seat and re-think the tandem bike option.

Thanks for the feedback, I think. Wonder what next week's Kool-Aid flavor is....

Tell me about it.. I was all set to get a firebolt next year when the X1 is paid off... but maybe the Uly is looking to be a good one to look into... the wife likes riding w/ me and i was hoping that the Firebolt would convince her to ride "the lightning" literally... instead of riding 2 up.. lol.

DANG YOU ERIK BUELL!!! gotta build a good 2-up bike didn't ya...

There is actually enough room on the back to put a child of 10 years old between you and the passenger. Hard to beleive but it is true.

The only thing I really don't care for is the sound of the exhaust. I want some noise even a little noise. Just too quiet for even me.

Hey mike, out there on the rock you would love the Uly. They say the belt has been very well tested and it is supposed to be bullit proof. I read on the site that they dropped steel things into the belt and sprockets at speed with no effect. May have something to do with the guard on the Uly and the vastly improved belt also. I know you had an issue with belts in the past and now use chain.

Dave,
I hear ya on the exhaust...I'm not sure where to take it though. I have a D&D on the shop XB9S, and while I LOVE that pipe on THAT bike, it is the wrong pipe for a Ulysses. I'd like to be able to take the bike on long rides without the exhaust reverberating in my helmet for hours on end, and the D&D is just too loud and percussive for that use. And the D&D wouldn't be a very good bash plate anyway.

The Latus is not much different from that perspective, and has been discontinued (hopefully temporarily) anyway. The Jardine sure ain't it for this bike. The drummer/special ops pipe options may be a reasonable option, but a special tip is going to have to be designed to clear the kickstand. So I'm just not sure which way to take the Ulysses, exhaust wise, just yet.

Al

Which Mike? I thought you couldn't bring a 1995 Buell up to Newfoundland from the States? If me then you'll get a better price from someone else. ; ) And seeings as how I don't imbide the Screech I'm a little tougher to soften up in the negotiations. .

Tell ya what I'm going to do. Bring about $5,500 U.S.Dollars down to Daves shop in Appleton on Saturday September 3rd, and I'll bring the S2 title and the S2. Also bring along a bottle of screech, I'll bring some soda or bitter lemon. I'll take the S2 title out of the envelope and sign it off, then I'll take $5,000 of those U.S.Dollars and put them into the envelop and place that money into my pocket. We'll then take the remaining $500 and split it in two, $250 each. Then we'll play Texas Hold-em until one of us runs out of the $250 we start out with. When the cards are done we'll crack open the soda and screech and toast each other to a well done deal. I'll then take the $5,000 in my pocket and will go talk with Daves to see what he can find back in the dusty racks in the back of the shop, you can then take the S2 for a ride around the block to see what little things it may need for your ride home. I'll be sure the fluids are fresh and the gas is full for ya.

But you'll probably find a sweeter deal out there, probably even one with the Signature Series documents and stuff (never got that stuff with mine : ( ).

I'm sort of thinking if I ever move away from Wisconsin and head back west that a little more dirtable bike might be nice for the dry season.

In any case, starting to feel like Autumn down here a little bit, going to be an interesting next couple of weeks I'm thinkin'.

See Al Lighton's ride report for some pertinent info on your check engine light issue. Seems some diodes got installed in reverse.

Blake, the diode was the neutral light coming on in all gears with the clutch in issue. The check engine light that I was getting was related to the exhaust servo. See here:

http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/141464.html?1124809250#POST 502665 and
http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/32777/132029.html?1124571669

Best to do the diagnostic test to see if it is related. If it IS the muffler Servo, Buell knows the fix.

Thanks Al for the input. But for now I have no desire to change to a louder pipe. I have a drummer on the 9r that is great for that bike but on the uly I want quiet. So I was thinking maybe there is a set of baffle disks or something that could be slipped over the stock pipe at the tip. on a second note what oil filter does it use? The same one as the 03 9r now that would be great news. My service and parts books are on order and my dealer does not have any books yet either. Must be why they had my suspension so far out of adjustment. I set it to factory per the owner's book and WOW what a great bike.

Raining this morning and foggy. Cool also about 47F. Drove the new Uly to work just the same. Didn't notice the rain or the fog or the cold. It is amazing how a new motorcycle will make you overlook all that just to get on and ride.

Quiet is good on any bike that you plan to ride on Forest Service Roads. As a dual sport rider (DRZ400S) I can tell you that noise is a serious issue with the environmentalists.

I have an announcement to make:
The Ulysses is the best bike Buell has ever built.
I'm dead serious.
Glendale HD was kind enough to hand me the keys and let me loose for a weekend. After 900 miles, I can't stop raving about how kick this bike is.
I really didn't think I was going to like it, but I was way, way wrong.

I hear yuh. I couldn't agree more. A lot of people are having their eyes, ears and senses alerted like never before. I get a kick out of the ones who haven't tried it and then yack off. When they try one they have admitted they shouldn't have said all they did. I will stand by my original thought the day after release. This will be Buells best selling bike ever to this date.

Hi Matty,

I have listed my venerable S2 for sale. Proceeds to be used for a new Uly. And I haven't even ridden one yet.

Make mine Barricade Orange with the hard bags and low seat.

It was either a Uly or a plasma tv. Guess which disposable income option won?

PS. When I saw EB up at Willow Springs in May he responded to a question about how Buell XB geometry worked by saying "We figured something out".

I'll say. One of the CW guys said the Uly was the best American bike ever built.

"She's named Buella."

Nice name Thunderbox! You're not old enough to remember Beulah as played by Ethel Waters on the early 50's TV show, are you? She was certainly no one you wanted to take for granted.

Just one of the perks of being a Glendale HD/B sponsored racer! =)
And what better way to advertise than to have a lunatic ex-skeptic running amok, blathering about the trilogy of tech, and how it's been perfected on the Ulysses?

Or should the badwebers be looking somewhere else for a good deal on a demo bike? :>; )

Brood, check out Buell's web site. They 'splain it there. Mass centralization, low unsprung weight and torsional rigidity.

Resistance is futile.
