All,
My previous XB9 had the race kit and the airbox top cover from an 08 bike (With the cutouts in it). My current XB9 has the Race ECM, Drummer SS muffler, K&N and American Sport Bike open airbox kit. I remember by previous bike being a bit snappier with the throttle. How do these two options compare? (The American Sport Bike open airbox vs a 2007+ top cover)

More probably a slight difference in the ECM mapping.

If you look at the throttle body, butterfly diameter, vs. the incoming air on the 07, I'd say that the incoming air is plenty enough to keep the throttle body filled with air.

Mike,
I should have pointed out that my XB9 is an 05. Is it possible that the extra flow from the open air kit would have adverse effects?

More likely the exhaust than the intake. I have a race kit on a 2004 xb9r and the stock exhaust actually runs munch stronger to 4000rpm than the race version. As for open air boxes they just make more noise.

Throttle body diameter is the bottleneck of the intake system. So no matter how your airbox is open it will not give you any extra HP over closed airbox with stock airfilter.

What Tpehak says, and there will make more intake noise...
