Does anyone have an exploded schematic view of the rear wheel and its components? Took my rear wheel off for the first time today to do a tire change and I'm a little stumped at the parts in the center of wheel, specifically the part indicated by the red arrow in the photo. It appears to be a spacer, but it's very stiff to rotate, and certainly doesn't seem to want to come out. I didn't use any force on it because I'm not sure I can, and the manual is useless here, so I'm hoping someone here knows what it is, and why it might be so stiff to turn. It's hard to imagine this is meant to spin on the axle, so my guess is it has to be the part that rotates on the inside of the wheel bearing. Something just doesn't seem right here. This wheel has done about 5000 miles from new and is on a bike that's garaged when not in use, so it's hard to imagine corrosion or seizure here. Perhaps it's meant to be this stiff? It would be good to know how to remove this part, because when I tried to balance the wheel after fitting a new tire, the whole assembly was too wide for the balancer!! If that spacer (or whatever it is) can come out then it might be easier to balance the wheel. Hope this makes sense. Not the easiest to explain.  | ||

If you go to https://www.erikbuellracing.com then click on `parts`, then click on `chassis parts book`, and scroll down to page 41, you can see it is a spacer which should pull out of the bearing. Enlarge the drawing to help see it ! Hope that helps,, Alastair. | ||

The drag you feel is likely the drag of the spacer and the outer dust seal that is making it difficult to rotate by hand - that's normal. If you need to remove that spacer, this tool works well - https://www.parktool.com/product/head-cup-remover- rt-1?category=Headset | ||

Thanks both! The exploded view makes it clearer - not sure how I hadn't found that already. Now I just need to go find a wheel balancer that can support an 11" wide wheel assembly!! |
