Hey guys, been awhile!!!

I have a deal started to get a 17 SX, OTD delivered to my door for $11k, does that seem reasonable? I am a bit concerned about service and maint parts, as I have been about the other 5 Buells I own!!! Some of those parts are getting pretty hard to come by. I haven't owned or ridden one of the water pumpers yet. Please advise!!!

The going price for a new 2017 model from a dealer seems to range from about $9500-$10500 so $11k delivered sounds about right.

Parts are something of a question. It seems they are giving preference on parts orders to dealers, so buying a 2017 from a dealer will hopefully give you an advantage over 2014-2015 owners. The main high wear items are the plastic swingarm protector (prevents chain from hitting the swing arm), and the front sprocket. The front sprocket, unlike most bikes, has the compensator incorporated, so it's an EBR-only part. A couple of guys are trying to reverse engineer these parts in case the supply dries up in a year or so.

Side note- the chain on these bikes needs to be kept noticeably tighter than other chain drive bikes due to the idler roller, similar to Buell XB's. A loose chain quickly chews through the guard and into the swingarm.

Besides Badweb, another good source of info is www.EBRforum.com.

Personally I've been wanting one for almost 3 years. I'll hopefully have cash in hand to buy one in the next week. My trouble is I'm still on the fence about whether to buy one or not.

Hugh, I was also on the fence for a long while. The tipping point for me was realizing how much I would regret it if I DIDN'T buy one. I knew I would want a bike such as this only in new condition, and I knew a short time ago, as did all of us here, that supply was now limited. And at the dollars they're going for, I felt I would have huge regret if I let the opportunity pass. As I now look upon my beautiful RX parked in my living room (no more room in the garage), I have absolutely no buyer's remorse, and am comfortable with my purchase. There are way too many talented, knowledgeable and willing members on this forum to ever feel I'm left out in the cold with this bike, or any Buell for that matter. I say go for it!

I think the thought of owning an EBR these days is more appealing than actually owning one.
Unless some kind of miracle happens and EBR is revived yet again, there are better bikes to spend your money on.
If more people would have purchased an EBR when they were in business instead of after maybe they would still be around.

Hey Sleez, Do it! I guarantee this will be the easiest bike to effortlessly squirt through the twisties with the most insane horsepower and torque delivery with just a twist of the wrist especially if you spring for the 44 tooth sprocket & Race ECM! As described, this is the best bike I've ever owned.

Unless you're near one of the few dealers, it doesn't seem like the warranty or extended warranty will be worthwhile for anything less than a catastrophic failure. I wonder if the dealers can/will be willing to provide some long distance support? Like, if your display goes out, will they be willing to send you a replacement if you send the bad one in? That might make an extended warranty a bit more attractive.

Buelljunkie, I've ridden one, and while nice for quick blast I don't see a having a long term relationship with one. If EBR could have reached the next level of development/refinement I would have been all in. EBR's are a quantum leap up from the XB series bikes which I own as well as an 1125R.
Other manufacturers have progressed as well and I just think there are better choices to spend money on, at least my money so I bought a new Yamaha FZ-10.

If and when Erik gets things going again, we'll see what he brings to the table, I can always jump in again.

Unfortunately the FZ-10 cost me more than you paid for your SX and only slightly more than the deal Sleez is getting on his SX.

The 2017s are pretty good right out of the gate.

What I really recommend doing is the secondary exhaust delete/race ECM/tip kit, also a 44 tooth rear sprocket.

As usual the bikes are weak at lower RPMs due to EPA, the Race ECM takes care of that. The stock gearing is too tall in my opinion, you end up slipping the clutch to around 20mph and easily stalling, and you won't get into 6th gear until you are doing around 80mph. The Race ECM lets you drop into the higher gears sooner, but the 44T sprocket cures the around town driveability and you can get into 6th at 60 no problem.

I agree with Froggy.
+1 to the 44T rear sprocket + Race ECM + secondary muffler delete.

I went Dean Adams instead of tip kit for a couple reasons. Shedding 15lbs from stock is a nice bonus.

++ on what's been said ...
The Dean's is a terrific performance pipe & LOUD! As far as I know, the SX trim pieces won't go on with the Deans. (Please correct me if I am mistaken) But heck, who wants to cover that bad mamba-jamba! I went with the stainless tips from Dean (yeah I'm a pansy) and polished them myself.

Another option is APH exhaust. Simply beautify and I believe Alan has a couple versions of a muffler PLUS recently unveiled GORGEOUS headers as well in a couple flavors. I believe the SX trim pieces will mount back on with the APH muffler.

Nothing can be done with exhaust unless you have the right ECM tuning and IDS has configuration for all of these.

DAve ... my 2 cents

Pat yourself on the back . . . . you've basically bought one of the best motorcycles in the world for about half of what's it's worth.

Somewhere I've got a couple cases of EBR "memorabilia" (we didn't plan on it to become "memorabilia" quite so soon) including some of the early attempts to design and create a logo and a bunch of "trial balloon" t-shirts and gear.

One of the early challenges was getting the logo and the website . . . the website was beyond the budget and some of you recall the first one.

The design work got farmed to a friend of one of the kids. I bought a "photo box" and a fax machine and sent, along with a surplus Dell flat screen to East Troy to allow parts to start being photographed for use for a hurry up online store. That was done by a Badwebber. We had 5 folks who were doing conference calls pretty much daily . . . in CA, WI and NY . . putting out fires . . .building budgets, doing payrolll (credit to Erik's wife for taking this over at about the 7th employee) and creating a scheme (under the good ol' "race use only" to get the most 1125 stuff from HD we could.

It's been a GREAT ride !

"I read on a post here recently that someone from MN was able to put collector plates on their EBR.."

Twirlin: I think it was my post about the EBR mules that got you pointed in that direction. Let me clarify.

I have NOT purchased one, and the statement about collector plates is only theoretical, based on one conversation with the MN DVS headquarters in Saint Paul, where the required inspection for such a vehicle would happen. IF the vehicle had a VIN# It MAY not need an inspection, and they MIGHT title it on a regular, or possibly bonded, title with no more than a statement of facts, and the bill of sale.

A lot of mays and mights in there, so for now I'm still just pondering. I cant afford to tie up a couple grand in a garage ornament, even one as nice as an 1190...(TX)

Caveat on historical plates: Check your local DMV regs to make certain there are no mileage limits on vehicles with HISTORICAL plates.

I just went to register my "new" HISTORICAL vehicle and there are a number of unique requirements. For example, the insurance card must say HISTORICAL in all caps to apply for historic plates.

Also . . . .there is a thing called "VINTAGE" plates. If you have an old plate, in my case from 1960, that is from New York . . . you may make application to use that actual platte and register the vehicle with that VINTAGE plate.

VINTAGE plates may not be driven for everyday use and may be used only for parades and so forth. I may put one on my 1952 but the 1960 is getting HISTORICAL.

State laws are all over the place on what they allow. New York, for example, has a little caveat (when you hover over the explanation) that tells you they may consider other reason, other than being 25 years old, for issuing HISTORIC plates.

It really saves me pretty much nothing . . . and gets me 8 characters of text . . . I'm trying to think of something creative and may just go with BUELL since no one else will have it. That ought to sufficiently confuse folks on an antique vehicle that is neither a Buell nor a motorcycle.

OK, the years mentioned ('52 and '60) are off, but it would technically be 'correct' on an Ocelot - if you could plate one...

I considered an Ocelot ...

But .... you can't get one with a positive earth or Lucas electrics so they tend to be reliable.

Where's the challenge in owning something reliable?

thanks all,

first impressions;

this thing hates in town riding!!!

mechanical noise is almost unbearable.

love the display.

clutch kicked my butt (wrist/hand) after 148 miles, and i work out 5 days a week (usually).

the handling is better than anything i have ridden, the tires stick like crazy.

don't love the seat, but not the worst i have ridden.

i think there will be a relationship!

It's think a '17 had the reduced effort clutch. I understand an Oberon m/c helps.

44T sprocket, exhaust and IDS ECM is choice.

i assume i'll get used to the clutch, most likely will replace the sprocket with a 44, and an IDS ECM sounds like the way to go. Rear muffler delete seems reasonable, not sure where to get the exhaust tips, but I guess my local exh shop could make me something?

Thanks for posting them Sleez. Not sure what my issues are: )

I pretty it's 2.25" stainless exhaust tubing. I can measure for ya if you want. Found the bends in the scrap bin and cut them up to look cool. They fit perfectly on the OD of the stock muffler and I even used the stock clamps!

This is the old tip I had on before for comparison:
https://www.flickr.com/photos/77190879@N05/36223317265/in/dateposted-public/

They have a much deeper tone than the titanium small ones I had on there before, I'm surprised theres difference but I like it!

Bosozoku!!!!!

Correction: I did end up buying the SX mockup/ prototype on the RS frame. I pick it up this Thursday. Once I get it home, I will likely be popping bodywork off and posting a few pictures to get as many background facts as I can for when I present its odd vin to the to the MN DMV for titling. I have assurances (found in in statute) it can be titled, and insured, but I have no idea what to write in for the year and model.
According to the auction listing, it's on an RS frame. (Would that make it an RS/X?) I presume it was assembled in 2013 (as far as I can guess from postings here on this forum and others). I guess that because if 2014 production pieces were available I would have thought they would have been used on the bike rather than the 3D printed pieces currently on it.

I also need to do a thorough run through of its assembly to make sure everything is actually there, and in working order before I turn the key. It might be the last "off the line" hand built, and rarest EBR of all, or a pricey ob jet d'art. We'll know by next weekend.

Easily could have been assembled in 2012. I'd probably take all the 3d printed parts off and keep them as conversation pieces.

Odd: That's presuming it has pistons, throttle bodies, and an ECM. It likely will sit under a blanket for a while while I figure out just what it actually is.
If I can get it running and titled, I might try and flip it. If the offers are no good, I bought it at a price that I could turn it into an sx/t type bike and ride the wheels off it. If its a $huge$ project, I might just sit on it a while to see where the value goes and gather parts.
I didn't buy it as an investment, I bought it to have fun. When it quits being fun I'll sell it.
That being said, everything I own has a price.
I'll know more on Friday.

Yea, it's gonna be a long 2 or 3 weeks. I have parts in hand to completely rebuild the front forks on my Honda Ascot which will hopefully keep me occupied while I wait.

Those seats look really nice, but I need to make sure I'm good with the bike at stock height before I invest in one as it looks like they'd add a bit to the seat height. I do recall from test ride back in 2014 that the seat height seemed a little taller than my Uly, which I've changed to XT suspension since then.

Depending on your weight, if you get the suspension adjusted per the owner's manual recommendations, that may help with the seat height.

Yea, I have no idea how the suspension was set up on the demo bike. I just remember it was a smidgen taller than my XB12X at the time.

Here's a pic my wife shot of me just before I went on my demo ride back in July 2014:

Hugh SX

You can see I'm toes down on both sides. I could likely handle a slightly taller seat; I just need to ride the bike a while and see how it feels.

BTW- the pic is from Buells in the Alps 4 at Little Switzerland; that's the Skyline Village Inn in the background. The then-EBR dealer from Greenville, SC, RPM, brought up an SX and an RX and gave test rides on NC-226, a pretty nicely twisty road. I don't know if he sold any bikes based on that but they attracted a LOT of interest and several people left there that day intending to buy an EBR (me included). It was by far the biggest turnout we've had for this yearly meet. Things were looking VERY good for the future of EBR that day.

Sadly, RPM folded shortly after EBR did about 6 months later.

Seat height (pre-load) shouldn't be any different unless the demo bike was cranked up for some odd reason.
The purpose of adjusting the pre-load is to have the suspension set at the same neutral static height with you're specific weight on it.

You misunderstood my comment Shoggin. I wasn't saying to improperly lower the preload for the sake of lowering the bike. I was saying to check the specs in the owners manual as adjusting the preload for proper weight will help if the current position happens to be stiffer than what is recommended for his rider weight.

Well, two days in:

On initial startup - failed to maintain idle for even 2 minutes, and shot out a worrying amount of white vapor/smoke. Initially thought it could have been a dead battery, bought a battery tender (needed anyways). Ended up being a leak at where the fuel injector line screws into the manifold, flooding the engine (and the airbox). Tightened and put a thin bridging line of JB weld over the offending fastener/manifold. Runs like a champ now.

Rear left turn signal bulb burnt out on first ride. After some google-fu, I believe my options are to pay at minimum $5 per bulb online to have them shipped from China, see if my Triumph dealer down the road has one, or buy a fender eliminator package and circumvent the issue. Leaning towards the last option.

Bodywork is slowly melting from the heat of the cat, and continuously smells faintly of burning plastic. Removed lower fairing and purchased 15' of heat shield tape on amazon.

If I go the FE route, I'm looking at $200 in unplanned spending in two days. I believe I officially own an EBR. But this thing is so cool.

Congrats Hughlysses!!

That thing is going to scare you....in a good way.

What's that line across the rear tire in the photo, looks like a cut.

That is some "extra" rubber from the seam of the mold, it is harmless.

Hughlysses,

Ok, now that you have it, where's the ride report? Did it make your eyes big?
The Ulysses will seem like a washing machine compared to the SX.

I've put about 60 miles on it so far; hopefully I'll get a long ride in tomorrow. I'm very pleased to report that my initial impressions from a test ride over 3 years ago are proving accurate. I owned a Buell 1125CR for about a year and I just never clicked with that bike. The SX seems to fit me noticeably better and despite having ~25% more power feels more controllable. I'm digging it!

I managed to put about 80 more miles on the bike yesterday afternoon. It was sunny and low 70's here. My rear was complaining about the seat after about 60 miles, but it's not a torture device by any means. Curves are few and far between around here, but I did manage to find a few near a lake about 20 miles away. Shifting is getting smoother already and the bike is running great. I do think I'll soften up the suspension a bit, and the chain could stand to be tightened, so I'll do that before my next ride. Off to Harbor Freight to get a rear stand today.

^ Nick- judging from your profile pic, I'm guessing you got a seat from Stitch? I will definitely go that way if I decide to upgrade. I'm a little hesitant to get a taller seat at present (I'm enjoying being able to easily reach the ground!), but I'll probably go that way if/when I upgrade.

I did a couple of ~8 mile loop rides this morning; this has become my standard "quick ride" route since it consists of the only remotely curvy roads in the county and they're close by. There are a lot of pavement patches on this route and a couple of rough bridge transitions, which were beating me up pretty badly on the SX. Following the manual, I backed off the front compression 3/4 of a turn (1/2 to 1-1/2 turns recommended) and backed off the rear 1/2 turn. Took a ride and decided the rear could stand to a be a little softer so I backed off another 1/4 turn on it. It's not "Uly like", but it's much better for these rough roads.

Also Hugh or anyone else, I have brand new EBR wheels bare but complete, that would be great for powdercoating custom colors.

Thanks for the correction. Nice to know there are at least 2 alternatives available.

Hugh, Phelan is correct.
I was able to fully customize the foam profile, so if you're worried about ride height, you might be better served only slightly thickening the foam but going with a firmer composition. It would be less likely to crush. James will take down all your details and come up with a great looking seat that functions equally as well.

If I got another EBR, I'd go with another seat from Renazco. It is the best upgrade I've bought for the bike, because it makes me want to ride it more!

Shoggin,
I didn't do any of it. All that you see was done by Renazco Racing. I sent a JPG of the pegasus and he had it embroidered in.
If needed, I could share the JPG I used.

Seats weren't cheap, but nothing worth its salt should be. Plan on $450 per seat, but if you get both seats, he may knock off $50-100 on the package deal. Be prepared to wait. I waited 10 weeks for my place in line, then 1-2 weeks to get the seat (depending on how much back and forth). James is great to work with.

I can email you the JPG, just PM me your address.

I'd have that thing just about broken in by now.
So, what do you think, worth getting?

Steve- I’m up to about 350 miles now. I did a ~100 mile ride on Friday. It was rainy here yesterday so I didn’t ride any. I did notice the chain’s stretched a little so I need to adjust it; it can probably use lubing as well.

I’m really liking it; much better than the CR I had. Definitely worth getting.

That bike looks really good in red.
Not in the near future for me but perhaps someday. It looks like a tremendous amount of fun!
