Well, the EBR,1190RX won out over the R1..!
Really hadn't intended on doing this today...but...I now have a dark grey, serial number 0028, 1190RX sitting in my driveway.

I talked at length to the Buell guys in the mid-east yesterday, and that basically sold me, as long as the dealer gets the extra coupla parts recommended by Adam fairly quickly, things will be fine.

About a 25+ mile drive home...in what else, 30mph SoCal traffic on the freeway, it wasn't nearly as bad as I'd thought after reading all of the heavy clutch and the engine not liking to run slow stuff on the net...it really was better than I expected.
NOW...if someone will just come up with a windscreen that is tall enough so I can actually...see...the dash board...! Even if I were racing this thing, the current windscreen is pretty much useless.

Well, here we go, it'll be my daily driver, 84 miles a day, lets hope it stays together and lasts a "few" miles.
My last three Yamaha FZR1000/R1's went over 100,000 miles, so this has a goal to meet..!

Mike

Pictures...so far, it looks like all the rest of the dark grey bikes.
Not being a smart-ass...but.

Court -
And yea...corrected, back in the mid-east/west. Adam.
He was very helpful in suggesting parts to make the bike more "easily" drive-able in bumper to bumper SoCal freeway traffic.
A coupla teeth on the rear sprocket and the muffler removal kit, "neither" of which appear as currently available..! On "back-order".

Not sure how accurate the speedometer is yet, but the first three or four miles on the freeway were open. It seemed VERY easy to run 90mph...and cruse there in 5th gear. Sixth gear almost seemed like lugging it. So adding a couple of teeth to the sprocket should add to the "overall" drive-ability nicely.

Just got done doing some controls adjustment. Now to do some preliminary fork and rear shock adjustments.

Happy so far...

Mike

Looking thru things, I'm I missing this or is there no coolant temp. indicator other than the red..."over temp" indicator ?

Thanks

Look at powerbronze for a windscreen. Think they are the only ones making one right now. Which size rear pulley did you decide to go with?

I asked about the display showing the coolant temp several times and was told "We have no current plans to implement that". I guess if enough guys bitch about it they'll do it. I'd like to see it on the dash in the morning when I'm leaving at least.

Lol. If by "driveability" you mean quarter throttle power wheelies at any RPM, then yes, dropping a gear would make it much more drivable. ; )

D Adams -
Agreed, seems dumb to me that they won't show coolant temp. I'd like to see the charging information too. That (gauge information) saved me on my CR when the stator died.

Mike13 -
If by "pulley" you mean sprocket...a 43 tooth as recommended by Adam at EBR.
And thanks, I found the Powerbronze earlier.

Nope...I mean low speed drive-ability..!

Couple thoughts. I'm nearly 6'4, if you're looking at the cluster through the top of the windscreen you're like sitting way close up on the tank. Scoot back a bit and you'll find the ergos to be sublime.

As for temp and charging stats, you can access them from the live data screen when stopped. To be honest this bike makes you want keep your head up and out anyway. It tends to disappear underneath me. I thought I wanted a panigale like everything display but the truth is I don't miss it a bit.

I think their reasoning for not having something like the actual coolant temp readout on the main instrument screen is that people, when given this information, tend to fixate on it. At the slightest change of temp, the dealership and the manufacturer end up answering hundreds of questions about, "why does my buddy's RX run 3 degrees cooler than mine does?"
They still give you the critical "engine cold" and overtemp indications, which is really all that 99% of us need to know.

Have you noticed that the temp gauge in your car is always in the "safe" zone when the engine is warm, whether it's -10 or 100 degrees outside? It's more of an idiot light than a precision instrument. Same rationale.

That is exactly right. I asked about it with the RS. Same answer. Their answer: don't overstress it until it warms up, let it cool off if it is too hot. If it is between those indications, regardless of what the temperature is, it is o.k.

Congrats on a great bike and yes too much information in the wrong hands can be a very bad thing. I see the snowmobile crowd get stupid about this exact thing. the new Polaris show head temps and you would not believe how some of the folks in our crew get when they see anything over 5 degrees above normal. they will literally stop for 10 minutes to let the sled cool down!!!

I'm 6", and I'll sit where I like. But thanks for the "heads up".

Sorry, I like to monitor my engine to take the appropriate precautions in the event things..."start" to go wrong. I really don't much care what's happening to other peoples bikes, that's their deal to monitor. What I do care about is what's happening to mine.
Just like I see people whining about the clutch pull...I don't see it as a problem..!

Well after the first morning on the road...
1. The battery is just BARELY there for three starts. One at home was fine, one at the gas station (about 2 miles away), also fine, the third start (about another two miles away) at the post office was well...not too nice, but it did start.

2. The headlight(s) are much less than I'd hoped for. Just like LED flashlights, just because they are LED's, doesn't make them bright. They could use some more lumins/candella power.

3. Nice power even for only having less than 100 miles on it.

4. Very nice control-ability. Better than the S1000RR BMW I just came off of. As we know the Buell is known for.

5. I don't think the clutch pull will be a problem. Will note after tonights drive home..!

6. Will also see about the slow speed driveability in tonight's drive home.

7. And, it's more comfortable than the BMW.
That, along with #6 should prove to be a great benefit splitting lanes in my afternoon drive home.

A little concerned about the battery deal, but overall, so far, happy with this bike.

Mike

P.s. - Lower pegs and higher bars aren't required. The EBR guys got it right.

140 AUD means Australian dollar i believe.

If you have the part numbers i can tell you what those parts cost in American money along with the 10% discount I offer for Badwebbers.

If a light tint (preferable), dark tint (second choice) double bubble is available, I'm in for one.

Daniel, I believe it is an Australian company that just makes windscreens. I am looking at getting a tinted screen in the original profile. Here is a link to their contact page. http://www.screensforbikes.com/contact-us/ The site does not list prices. I got that price from someone who already bought one of the double bubble style windscreens.

+ 1 on the powerbronze, after trying it I like the look but its louder than stock with only real benefits being in the full tuck the screen doesn't slit my view, and its MUCH EASIER to get my XL gloved mits in to work the dash buttons. From an aero perspective the stocker may well have it beat. For now the powerbronze stays.

I talked to the Shorai guys today. They eased my mind a bit, we'll see what happens.

And yes, the gearing does need the help of a few more teeth for splitting lanes in SoCal traffic.

The clutch pull is not a problem.

Anyone got a way to have both the headlight, high and low beam on at the same time ? Not sure how much that would help, but..."need more power" !

Still getting used to the hyd. clutch, but getting better. Like the cable pull better.

Handles great in traffic.

Even with all the little things, overall, so far, great purchase..!

Looks like a call to PowerBronze is in order.

Next on the list of things to do is wrapping the exhaust and some engine case protection.
The header tubes heat up everything, the right side radiator, the water pump and the clutch..!

Congrat 1 Mike, wait til it really opens up around the 2k mark! Do yourself a favor and get the tips or race exhaust for the race ECU, you will love it. Also the fixed pegs are AMAZING!!!

The headlights are the max lumens allowed by law for on road use. From the factory mine were adjusted down too much, I actually brought them up quite a bit to get them adjusted as suggested in the manual. That really helped. Now I think they're the bees knees for riding at night.

the ebr 1190 headlights as previously mentioned are the max allowable brightness by law so if yours aren't sufficient either they are aimed wrong, defective, otherwise compromised or maybe your eyes are getting older without permission.

when you say you want to gear it down some, are you finding first gear to be too high sometimes? talk about a long-legged gearbox

Lowbeam aiming is way low, high beam is nice. Any higher and I'd be looking for aircraft.
As far as allowed by law, the OEM lights (H4) on my S1000RR and old R1 were "brighter", but not nearly as white as the LED's.
Will check into the aiming this weekend. Hopefully they are separate.
Still want to combine the low and highbeam when the highbeam is on.

Updates -
1. Speedometer accuracy is nice, very close. I haven't seen accuracy this close since my little XB12. Even my 1125CR isn't this close. There's two schools near me with radar signs, two each. As checked on all four signs, I'd say within a 1/2mph.
And NO offshore bike has ever been this close.

2. Just past 300 miles and I finally rolled the throttle on moderately hard this morning getting on the freeway....what a disappointment..!
From about 3500 to about 8000rpm, is just kinda cruised up the scale. Not a head over the handlebars flat spot, just a VERY light acceleration...NO power.
The moderate roll-on type acceleration is fine, the cruising fueling is fine.
No popping, no banging, no odd bucking, just nothing. Just smooth slow acceleration.
Hell, 5th gear 4000rpm roll-on has better acceleration.
15 second drag race timeslips here we come.

3.Still playing with the chassis adjustments, getting better. The freeway maneuvers to keep from getting run over are a very good thing. Handles like my XB12s.
Compared to the 1000RR...the RR is a tank.

Sounds exactly like what happens when the solenoid engages on the 1125R, it closes up the butterflies reducing power output. The fix on the 1125R is just to disconnect the cable from the throttle body.

Noone's correct me thinks, sumthins broke.
But I don't think I care...

I turned off the Traction Control before I left work.
The engine "seemed" different, even winding my way out of the parking lot, I dismissed it.

By the time I made it to the freeway, the onramp was pretty crowded so I had to wait to make some power. But again, on the drive to the freeway, the engine seems different, sounds different.
Ok..on the freeway, I moved around so I had some space, slowed a little, 2nd gear, hit the throttle hard... The front end got "really" light, and it took off like it should with 100+lb. ft. of torque.

The engine does sound different, all the way thru the rpm range, from a 3rd gear roll-on to a second gear roll-on, on to about 97+mph just before getting off the freeway.

Whatever turning "off" the Traction Control did, it is like just that, an on-off switch, only in this case, the "off" is the good direction.
It's a completely different nature that the engine has now, sound, feel vibration, like a different engine.

I just hope that whatever's "wrong", that it wont cause any other problem(s) in the system.
NOW...I'm great with this purchase. Even the headlights are ok...well not really but for a coupla days, they'll be passable...if you know what I mean...

For what it might be worth, the current milage is 378.2.

Yea...I wasn't dreaming last night, all is well.
The engine's running great now.
The Engineer in me wants to turn the Traction Control back on to see what happens, the chicken in me says no.

We'll see...

FWIW, I left the TC off during the break-in on my 1190RX.

Didn't want any traction (control) action interfering with properly breaking in the engine.

Lord knows I wouldn't be riding it hard enough to need the traction control during break-in...

Might be too large to email but perhaps if you are coming to Homecoming you bring a copy on usb stick or even mail one to me? Send me an email if you can help

450 mile (600 mile) checkup today.
The main thing I wanted to see was the oil and filter.
Visually clean......! No specs of any color visible in the filter, nothing shiny in the oil, both as aided by bright sun.

Happy...

Mike - congrats. Dave - fingers crossed and prayers for y'all.

Dropped the OEM oil in the RS Thursday, looked real good.
Kind of expected it to look good, being Amsoil.
Loretta, my 1125R had H-D dino 20-50 and it was BLACK at 400 miles.

At 620 or so, 10km, I'll do a full change and check the screen.

So far so good...

Does anyone know...for sure what the 1190 engine case is made of ?
No "I think" here. Maybe one of you have had to do some welding to the case...aluminum or magnesium.

Actually it's not the actual case I'm interested in, it's the oil filter cover.
I want to weld a pipe fitting onto it so I can...plug it and unplug it at will..!
In my oh so humble opinion, the filter cavity is way to large for the oil pump to fill without having the bearings, cam run dry during an oil change, even for more than the four seconds it takes to shut off the indicator when starting.

Anal, maybe, but I'm hoping to get 6 digits worth of mileage out of this engine/bike. Taking the time it takes for the pump to fill this cavity is an awful lot of time for things to run dry, stretched over that many miles.

I actually started thinking about this way back on on my 1125CR, but never finished the thought when I found the pitted cam.

Anyway, any help would be appreciated.

Mike
