Larry Pegram: "He was fast right from the get-go and ending up by breaking the Jennings lap record by 7/10ths of a second!

We were using my bikes from this year, with full World Superbike spec suspension, Pirelli tires and ‘fly-by-wire’ electronics."

Niccolo Canepa: "Larry and I swapped bikes several times and we both had similar comments, so we know we’re heading in the right direction. At Jennings I broke the lap record, which made us all very happy."

I don't know much about motorcycle racing but I do know a qualifying car or car during open practice is much faster than the racing setup.

What does fly by wire mean? are EBR's going digital throttle controls? Could EBR truly believe this is more important than ABS?

It means no throttle cables which means less weight. Harley has been doing this for a few years and is considered tried and true in the automotive world.

My S1000RR has it and I don't really like it. Feels like it lags. Track spec is probably different.

Has EBR found their alien jockey?

Although you have provided me with information I already possess, I thank you for contributing what you knew. I don't know much about WSBK homologation rules so I don't know if the throttle by wire will be on production bikes.

Has EBR found their alien jockey? If by that you mean their race pilot for the upcoming season, I believe so. I wish they could tempt Danny Eslick back though. He was truly deadly on an EBR.

Defeats a higher horsepower Suzuki with essentially skill and courage. And a razor handling EBR.

"Feels like it lags"

I've noticed this on every fly be wire vehicle I've had experience with. In fact, pretty much every control interface that goes through a computer has lag.

I have always thought that the LACK of electronics on an EBR bike is an asset.

I always felt the FBW on a throttle provided too little resistance and felt light, and hard to modulate in small increments making you chase it.

I continue to be shocked at how hard you can get on the gas leaned over on this bike. Even a slight attempt to be smooth makes it want to wheelie instead of spin up while leaned over. I've heard several EBR people say it was designed to put down all its power WITHOUT TC and that TC was added because when it Rome, but its not really needed. I'm slowly starting believe them.

Same thing for wheelies for that matter, any attempt to be smooth and it simple accelerates HARD. It doesn't power wheelie unless I make a specific attempt to. By "attempt" I mean the kink of hamfistedness I would never attempt on say an S1kRR or RSV4 as it would result in something way too hard to modulate. Does needed a better steering damper though as wheeling on exit can get you all crossed up really quick.

I don't know much about modern tech, but I do know that when throttle by wire was still a growing technology, there were often as few as 18 distinct throttle positions. Obviously with a real throttle you have infinite positions available for instant use. but often I have longed for a "block under the gas pedal" that allows me to go to a certain position repeatedly. in addition to full throttle and no throttle.

Eslick is good but I think his rival Josh Herrin drove him to a particular level. If he wasnt battling Herrin he really wasn't doing much but following Geoff May around.

It isn't just about the lack of a throttle cable giving direct link to the butterflies.

Ride by wire puts another tool in the control system toolbox.

Watch a Moto GP rider whack the throttle open at apex without the bike launching him to the moon. Rider says "wide open", ECM says OK lets see what the sensors say. Nope, not now, but as soon as the comparators come in line, you got it. The electronics guy set the level of wheel spin to the skill level and capability of the chassis, tires, and track conditions. Using GPS, they can change parameters for anywhere on the track.

Production street bikes only have a tiny fraction of that ability, so they are set up WAYYY to the side of caution.

Any speculation on whether production models will feature throttle by wire or whether a broken lap record means the bike is a world-beater?

I dont think it means a world beater. It looks more promising then it did, though. If they can get a Marquez-esq rider it certainly will improve their chances. This guy is likely more familiar on the European tracks then May and Pegram and apparently isnt afraid to go balls out on an unfamiliar track as well. I'm excited to see how this pans out this year. Can't wait until February. If this guy starts putting this bike on the podium you can kiss those sale prices goodbye. Get em while you can boys.

Podium in wsbk? Lol. Mid pack would be fantastic.

A well tuned fly by wire system can also boost hp/tq at some rpms. Come out of a turn in a gear where rpms are a little low but you got a long straight coming. You want max power asap. Convitional could produce a bit of a dead spot if wide open throttle is achieved at throttle blades. Fly by wire would sense desire for WOT but actually give 90% throttle until rpms raise a thousand or so to where WOT produces max power
