not sure if its a CGI or the real thing but on the Australian EBR website when you click on the AX model it comes up with a shadow pic of the AX...Definitely see some differences....small windscreen....different tail set up...larger rear tyre guard...exhaust looks the same though...I think the seat looks a little different too. It might be on there to throw us of EBR scent too???
Cheers from Oz

I noticed the same, at first I thought it was the SX but it is not correct for it. I don't think it really is the AX though.

I can't imagine they would put that tail section on an adventure bike.

Here's a side photo of the SX:

1190SX

The bike in the silhouette image seems to have the same tail assembly with a different rider's seat, but no license plate holder. The airbox is much taller at the front, and there is some sort of windscreen. It doesn't appear to have mirrors.

I'm guessing it's just a doctored SX photo with some randomly altered details which may or may not bear much resemblance to the actual AX.

Duel exhaust - is that the condition one enters when physically overexerted by conducting activities of one-on-one rivalry?

No, dummy. Duel exhaust is fartfighting.

Well, the one thing we did learn about the AX from the Q&A with Erik on Facebook yesterday is it will NOT have shaft drive.

I think the AX will be an SX with extended suspension travel up front. The rear is going to be hard to get additional travel from. I wonder if the subframe on the AX will remain magnesium? The whole sub frame/tail/seat assembly is very light and almost completely water tight.

Dealing with a chain isn't all that bad. Dirt bikes have done it for years.

Being a current Uly owner, I would like a belt drive from the factory, with affordable chain conversion parts in a catalog for the very few people that really do plan on riding gravel and dirt more than 10% of the time.

And I'd be happy to give up power for longevity, longer service intervals, economy and range on an adventure bike.

A 130 HP AX that would go 200,000 miles between rebuilds and got 50 MPG would have me giddy.

The AX needs to have the same general 'look' and ergonomics as the class leading BMW GS1200 and KTM Adventure really I think. Anything too far from the 'state of the art' adventure bike architecture will put buyers off.

The Multistrada, Triumph Tiger, Suzuki adventure thingy etc are not in the same league when it comes to off road performance but are more road orientated. They appeal tot he same buyers who buy a Range Rover becaue it looks cool rather than any off road capability.
Maybe EBR will aim more for this sector instead of hardcore off road style, especially given the overtly sporty nature of the motor?

Either way, I don't think it will look anything like the 'silhouette' above.

I was told when I was at Laguna Seca that the AX would be delayed a few months for a redesign. It has been decided that they need to have a best in class adventure bike not just another good adventure bike. No I do not know what that entails. I did not realize how big that part of the market adventure bikes are like 20% of the street bike market. It was felt that they had 1 shot at a first impression and they had better get it right. I agree the last thing they need is a relaunch of the 1125R.

Heard a rumor that EBR will have a special surprise at the EBR Bike Night at the Iron Horse Hotel August 14th in Milwaukee.

AX? Something else? Last year Erik rode in on an 1190RS.

Adventure bikes are really just the new naked standard bikes.

You can mock them and make jokes about posers and range rovers and claim that everyone on an adventure bike is imagining they are racing from Paris to Dakar...

Or you can recognize that the best naked bike should have had more ground clearance, greater range, more suspension travel, and lots of luggage space all along, and it just took the industry a while to recognize it.

If you really think you need a GS-1200 or KTM Adventure, I think you should have bought a KLR-650 and spent the other $13,000 on gear and travels.

If you really think you need a GS-1200 or KTM Adventure,

Whether anyone NEEDS these is one thing, but plenty WANT them. The vast majority will never ride over a kerb let alone off road, but they are comfortable, have big tanks and ideal for long distance work. The GS is also surprisingly fast on real roads.

What is the best selling BMW in the UK by a huge margin?......GS1200. How many ride off road? virtually none.

I agree that EBR need to get it right on day one with this model as the buyers tend to be more mature and keep their bikes longer in this sector. if it isn't good straight away it will take a huge effort to convince people afterwards.

Is the DR650 air cooled or water cooled?

I get nervous about big bore air cooled thumpers to be used as street bikes, and their longer term durability.

I had a KLR250, lots of fun and a proper dirt bike when you wanted it to be.

I watch for local cheap KLR650's, I'll have one when budget and opportunity intersect. I'm thinking of trying to trade the KZ-400 cafe conversion for one.

Related to the AX discussion...

I test rode an 1190SX at Little Switzerland, NC this weekend (see the "Buells in the Alps IV" thread on the Quickboard). I was just really struck how much amazingly better it was than the 1125CR I owned for about a year. More comfortable, much less heat to the rider, higher quality pieces everywhere, more tractable at low RPM, and more torque. I have a feeling this engine would be awesome in an ADV bike with NO changes, but generally I'm with Reepicheep on what I'd like to see EBR do with it.

The test rides were provided by Real Performance Motorsports of Greenville, SC, who brought the RX and SX up for our Buell meet this weekend. Several people asked the dealer rep (Randy) about the AX.

Randy wasn't real definite on this, but said EBR had indicated the release of the AX may be delayed for a bit from what had been indicated previously. He thought it would be late this year or early next year.

Randy said the reason for the later release of the AX is that EBR is concentrating on doing whatever it takes to get Hero's bikes into the U.S. ASAP since that's a big part of the overall plan. Randy did say they'd gotten a good bit of info on the Hastur (650cc streetfighter) and that it looks really good.

You can't see the grin on my face, but I promise it's ear-to-ear:
