Post from a short-time 1190RX owner at www.ebrforum.com (I cross-posted the warning in another thread about removing the secondary resonator):

quote:

Rode my bike without the secondary a couple times. Sounded better, that's about it. Put the secondary back on and traded in the bike for a new '14 RSV4 Factory APRC. After coming from a 2012 RSV4 Factory APRC which is without question one of the most refined sportbikes on the market the 1190 RX felt raw and unsorted to me. Low rpm fueling was off and the bike had a flat spot at 5000rpm on the expressway. Coupled with some fault codes, rattles in bodywork, so-so clear coat finish and the lack of tunability I made the move back to Aprilia.

No offense to the guy, but anybody that buys a $19k motorcycle and trades it on another similarly priced bike that quickly over some minor niggles clearly has more money than sense. I'm not saying that he's lacking in either, just that the ratio's out of whack.

I guess if I had that kind of money to blow I might be willing to try a bike and trade it immediately if it didn't live up to my expectations, but damn, what a waste of money!

The guy's apparently in Miami, maybe there's a deal to be had on a slightly used 1190RX if you're in that area!

On the other hand...maybe if you splash $19K on a motorcycle you shouldn't expect to have those minor issues at all?

For that price I would expect everyting to be sorted out either pre delivery or straight away by the dealer. He doesn't mention of the dealer offered to fix his problems though, so maybe he just realised he had bought the wrong bike for him.

^ Matt- I agree with you that for that price the bike should have been perfect when delivered.

"5000 rpm flat spot" sounds like the throttle solenoid kicking in. This guy also mentions low RPM fueling issues. The reviewer at motorcyclist.com made a passing reference to that but the other reviews (Cycle World, Cycle News, and several rider reports) make a point that the fuel injection is perfect. Perhaps this was related to the error codes he mentioned?

If the rx motor is anything like mine someone used to a four cylinder bike is likely to find the lower RPMs "stumbly". It's just the character of this motor.

I've been saying for a long, long time "keep the revs up". The motor is happy in that 6k range.

One of the great things about motorcycling today is the vast choices available for the riders, pretty amazing. Not everyone likes twins, one of the characteristics of twins is this raw character, some like me love it, some don't. Now as far a fueling goes, anyone who owns a MV Agusta surly can't complain about fueling issues!! lol

I do agree the RSV4 is an awesome machine, good friend of mine has one and road with me this past Sunday, he could not believe how quick the EBR was, he commented that I just pulled away from him. As for me the RSV4 is one of the most uncomfortable machines made, every time I think of owning one of those beautiful Italian super models, I remember the medieval torture rack is still in use today!! I have tried riding the RSV4 and 10 minutes is all I can handle, for me it is a no start situation, but that is what make it great to be a motorcycle enthustiast today, something is out their for everybody.

I actually have the opposite opinion for release of a first year anything always has niggles. The RSV4 was almost in my garage when the announcement on the EBR came in October. It was worth the wait. Take a look at the forums on any bike first year and you'll see the same sorts of issues. Part of the bodywork being made so light weight is its not all that strong. The bike vibrates more than an i4 or a Duc, so fastener torque specs have to be spot on. Too loose and they will rattle out, too tight and they will stress the parts under vibration and lead to cracks. I've had the airbox cover, left side fairing and an ECU reflash/replaced for cracks and failure to clear fault codes. New ECU and I get NO front O2 sensor faults anymore. I find that any one who buys the first release of the first model year of anything has to be prepared for such niggles.

For me, nothing available beats the EBR on ergos. For 20K could it be more refined? Yes and No. Yes it could be more sorted and polished, but no because I actually like that rawish feel.

Rode it on a new very tight(near go cart) track I had never been to before Saturday. It turns with the 250's and 600's but I found if I kept the RPMs up where I like in the 5-6k range I was making too much power to be comfortable on such a small track. I could accelerate with anyone. The power was not an issue, braking markers and not charging corners, was! Instead of FIRING my self between corners with max accel to max braking, I found myself slower working on two or three corners a lap to find the best corner entry speeds. It didn't really all come together until the last two laps of the last session of the day. Felt so good I was screaming in my helmet. On the larger tracks I ridden it so far, fresh out or the box it can run toe to toe with a lot of race prepped liter machinery. In this case the steed is far more capable than the jockey will ever be.

When I went from a 1125 to a BMW s1000rr I couldn't get used to it at all. I eventually bought another 1125. Once I figured out the I4 I was thrilled with the bimmer. I'm sure going the opposite way is equally as frustrating. Fact is once you're used to something it takes a while to get used to something else. Sounds like he didn't give it much of a chance.

"so-so clear coat finish"

I thought the RX had molded in color bodywork.

The 1190rX bodywork is similar to the old Buell plastics .. but about 50% the thickness. Pretty sure its still molded color like the old plastic. I have taken the airbox cover off mine and its yellow underneath as well.

The color is molded into the body work. I don't know how many miles he had on it, but with a couple ticks over 5k on mine, I'm really enjoying it and it still has a lot performance potential I have yet to tap. The 1190RX certainly is a machine with its own unique strong personality and soul. Definitely takes some getting used to coming from an I4 or even an Ltwin.

So there's no clear coat to be so-so. Sounds to me like a guy who didn't spend much effort investigating his purchase. More money than sense.

And like I said in the original post, that doesn't necessarily mean he's dumb; he could just be loaded.

Wish I had that problem.

Sarcasm font enabled *Nope, its totally unheard of to drop $18-26K on a bike by any other MFG's and encounter not just niggles but multiple recalls. Nope is just doesn't happen *Sarcasm font disabled

Ducati has issued a recall on 2083 1199 Panigale and Panigale S models regarding an electronics issue. The recall involves a handlebar switch wiring problem that can result in failures for a variety of components, including the turn indicators, horn, headlights, and instrument panel.

The recall affects both U.S. and Canadian 1199 Panigale models (not the 899) produced between March 2012 and August 2013. Ducati says it will notify owners by mail on how to address the issue, but if you own a Panigale and believe it to be affected by the recall, it’s best to take it to your nearest dealer for further action

Let's see seven years ago in 2007 a BMW K1200S cost about 16K, all you need to do is go to a BMW forum and read about all the problems these bikes have. Let's see if I can remember a few off the top of my head, remember the K1200S came out in 2005 so this is a list for a third model year not a first.

Cam chain tensioner update with oil reservoir (to prevent loose can chains at start up), cam chain jump guard (because the tensioner upgrade wasn't enough), rear suspension linkage recall (bearing), front brake recall(foaming fluid), engine cooling recall (condensation causing rare instances of the oil tank rupturing), fuel pump housing cracking recall (fuel leaks), let's not forget the fueling issues these bikes have and the fact that BMW has a habit of updating required maintenance like the "lifetime" final drive oil that later they decided needed to be changed at the first service and every 6 or 12k after that. The best part is because the oil was "lifetime" the final drive doesn't have a drain plug(05-08 models), you have to dissemble the final drive to change the oil. Oh and they changed their mind on how much oil the final drive takes, seems the original spec was to much and was causing blown seals sending oil all over the rear tire.

Now having said that I must confess I have a K1200S and love it for riding two-up with my wife.

That's a terrible example. I'm sorry, but if I'm on the back of a motorcycle, and the rider has his knee down in a corner, how comfortable the seat is is not what I'm thinking about, even though said seat would be in direct physical contact with my sphincter. : ) Hell of a shot. Fearless.

Haha, true, true.

We've ridden a couple hundred miles in a day together on it. No real complaints other than how high she sits up and how slick the seat is. I made a grip mad for it from techspec sheets when I made some for the airbox. That helped a lot.

We had about 20,000 miles on my XB together.

" lack of tunability"

Tune it for WHAT? While at the demo day a guy who had never even ridden a liter bike before, much less the 1190RX was telling me how it needed to be tuned for more power and he would wait until a PCV and a map were out for it. I was like 165rhp is more than tons of races bikes are producing and they don'te get at least 21mpg at WFO throttle while doing it. I like to tinker too but man come on....

^^

He's one of those guys that shaves the emblems off his car, paints his calipers, uses a yellow tire marker to fill in the wording, I would assume. Nothing wrong with it, since it's your own taste, but when your list of forthcoming mods is:

Rizoma Mirrors
Rizoma Levers ( hopeful that a universal lever will work)
Flush mount turn signals
Race Exhaust/Ecu (EBR will be have an exhaust available, no eta given)
Rearsets (may just have the stock set anodized)
Tail Tidy (whenever they pop up)
Carbon (Matte) Goodies when they turn up

roughly 86% appearance-only, you need to have all the gewgaws ready to go- can't be waiting on those flushmounts, breh.

Tuneability for me is way more about enhanced performance than appearance...and I know that I can make my bike's performance better by shedding 20lbs off my carcass than by doing anything to my bike.

"I can't believe I spent $$$$ and it's not perfect"

I hear that from the gun forums, motorcycle, car, you name it.

Folks, more money doesn't mean more perfection. More money means more power, more features, lighter, better materials.

Would it be nice for production products to be perfect? Sure, but how long would you like to wait for that new product, and how much extra testing would you like pay for?

GM spends millions on testing, and they still put out cars with defective ignitions.

Lexus, Mercedes, Rolls Royce, you name it, they all have nits and picks, defects, etc...

I wonder if his flat spot, low speed fueling and DTCs were related to the fact that he was running it without the secondary? Anony just posted a few day back that timing and fueling would be way off with just that mod alone.

Shouldn't cause any dtc's in theory. If it is running so lean that engine can be damaged, the would mean it is outside of closed loop area. Therefore, shouldn't get any type of fuel system lean codes. The r have been several minor dtc issues but have seem to been easy fixes.

The Quarter Wave is like a two stroke tune pipe for a 4 banger. At a certain rpm it contributes to the HP and Torque curves. A lot of other machines do this by either having an exhaust valve or by changing the A/F ratio to compensate in one area or another. Pulling it will require the A/F to be tuned or you will definitely get a flat spot.

When I buy my new EBR SX or AX which ever it will be. It will just have to be more reliable than my brand new 1972 Harley Sportster XLCH. So how is that for requirements to live by.
