I dont have or havnt ridden any of these 3 bikes but I see strong points with all of them. The S1 looks the meanest of the bunch and seems like it would be easier to work on than the XB.

The X1 I guess got fuel injection in 2000? and fuel injection is nice. The XB just looks more modern than both bikes and has some neat features. I think this also takes away from the easy to work on factor.

Im just curious what guys who've had a chance to ride all 3 models think. Id like to get one this year.

the Xb and the X1 are a little different in the seating area, this is totaly subjective, to me the Xb feels like I am on top of it the X1 is more of an IN it,
( the S2 is better yet!, thanks Henrik)
Both bikes are the EFI It is great when it works but can be annoying to trouble shoot. It is largely trouble free, the X1 is a bit easier to service with the removable side plate. The X1 has been fuel injected since introduction in 99

2001 x1 cf tank cover, trim, spoiler, billit dash with temp and press gauges, catch can [ home brew ], oil cooler.
Force intake (carb version) Super trapp.
Factory PM wheels

The only thing that you may not have is a laptop or palm and the software to diagnose and adjust neither are that difficult to obtain, This is the place for info and help, Good luck ..

My M2 has a 98 S1 seat. It's great for the track, acceptable for commuting, and poor for distance riding. You'll find a tuber much easier to work on than an XB because the frame doesn't cover so much of the engine. OTOH, if you get a new XB, you probably won't have to work on it as much.

If you get a tuber, find one that's had the primary, starter, and cam cover gaskets replaced already. The primary gasket is easy to replace, the starter is a bit more difficult, and the cam cover gasket requires a bunch of the motor to come apart.

by all rational and objective measures, the XB series platform is far and away a better bike than any tuber.

Yet, we all know that little about motorcycling is rational and objective, don't we?

the AM version is that, if you're lucky, a bike will speak to you (ditto guitar, firearm, edged tool, etc). Listen closely, and you're likely to hear

old Spanish proverb (I think) -- it's a lucky man that has, in his life, a good horse, a good dog and a good woman.

Johnny....

I've ridden the S1W (own one), an X1 and almost every bike in the XB line-up. They are all different in their own rights.

The S1W is more "raw" than the others.

The X1 is similar to the S1W but a little more comfortable in the saddle.

The XB-S models are closest to the S1 & X1. But for me, I didn't feel as comfortable on the XB. They felt cramped and almost too twitchy. But I will say that the power delivery is MUCH smoother.

If you're interested in the S1, then make sure it is an S1W. The extra power is very noticable. The X1 is a solid bike. But I'd avoid the '99 (early production problems). With either bike, I'd upgrade the oil pump gear. As for the XB line-up, I'd go with the 1203cc model. Again, the extra power is nice.

you need to ride them then...

We can do all the describing in the world but won't mean a hill of beans to your personal taste ;)

IE...

Like Lake said the S1 is RAW. Touring from Green Bay to Detroit via the U.P. is a chore in it's self.

The X1, as erik said, was built for people that didn't like the X1.

and the XB's

there is a whole can of worms there.
;)

I'll give up a little reliability to get the look of an S1. Most of my driving will be in short 20-30 minute spurts too and from work. I like the easy access look of the S1. Id rather have fuel injection but wont mind a carb. Im 5'9" so I dont think any model will be too small.

As an owner and rider of all three, '98 S1W, '99 X1, '05 XB9sx.
I have to say the S1 has it hands down.
It is all a Buelligan could ask for and more.

Granted, my XB has the handling down pat, but the S1 be far, is still the pick of the litter.

Buellfighter: Sweet bike !!!

S1!!!

I've had three of them. You just can't beat the S1 for looks and fun! Get one, you won't be sorry. Here's my current S1.

The only thing I dont like about the S1 is the location of the rear shock. Just seems like a bad place for it. Im sure Buell designers know a lot more than me though.

Very nice Buells guys. Just confirms the fact that I think I need an S1.

The shock laid under the motor is one of the best looking features on the S1's.

Who cares if it works or not. You can always spend a few dollars more making it (work).

I have an S1 and an XB9R w/ S tail. Love them both for different reasons. The S1 looks mean as hell and has tons of raw power whenever you decide to twist the throttle. I can't go anywhere w/out someone asking me what it is and have had dozens of offers to buy it on the spot. The XB handles a bit better, actually has some wind deflection (which is nice in the winter), and has a much more comfortable seat. I personally do not care for the looks of the X1, but that's just my opinion. I have never ridden one, so I can't speak first hand as to their performance.

Bunch of pussies I tell you, only touring from Green Bay to Detroit by way of the UP. I bet you even took the ferry across to get back.

I don't think I can still feel my butt after 3 years.

For me I love my S1 but also love the look of the S3.
