Noticed that my N light was not always coming on with bike in N, it would take some time to light up and sometimes not at all. Last time after riding all day I went to fire it up, no N light, no power to starter. Lights etc.. working fine, I’m confident the batteries fine. Is the starter connected to the N light circuit? Anyone had this happen?

Thanks

There's a combined cut off circuit that goes between the neutral switch, sidestand switch, and clutch lever switch. The sidestand switches are a known weak spot, and a lot of people, myself included, have just removed the sidestand switch and jumped the plug. I did the same with my clutch lever switch just to be safe. If it's either of the sidestand switch or clutch lever switch, the bike should still start in neutral, and would only cut out when you tried to put the bike in neutral.

The neutral switch is on the right side of the engine by the front pulley. Maybe you'll get lucky and the contacts just need cleaned up.

Mine has been problem free for a while, but the past couple weeks I have had a few times where I tried to start the bike and nothing happened at all, and my neutral light has been flickering a lot. I initially just thought it was the dash light coming unseated, but maybe not the case. I usually turn the ignition on and off and try it a couple times and it'll start, but I'll probably have to mess with it by spring and see what I can find.

Similar problem on my '99X1. N will sometimes flicker while in gear. Usually happened when in need of an oil change and would clear up after. Right now I can only start when in N and with the kickstand up.

should the clutch switch be jumped or left open? Same with the kickstand? Thx.

I'm almost positive it needs to be left open, but I can't remember for sure. Plus side is it's easy to find out. Just unplug it and try to start the bike in gear and see what it does.

Sidestand plug needs to be jumped. Since my plug was shot, I just cut the wires and soldered them together and covered it up.

I thought I had removed my clutch lever switch but after looking yesterday, it's still hooked up. Lately my bike wants to be in neutral to start, so the neutral sensor must be working. I know I jumped the sidestand, so I'm guessing it's the clutch lever switch that's crapping out on me.

my kickstand has to be up to start and run. Neutral light works. I suspect my clutch switch too, but there may be an issue with the neutral circuit too.

Finally got a day to work on my bike, it's due for an oil change so will do that first to see if this fixes the issue. How often do you guys change primary/trans oil? What are your preferences re synthetic/regular etc.. I also have a Jagg oil cooler on mine but my understanding is this shouldn't effect how I change oil at all/quantities etc.. 2 quarts in the Engine and 1 quart in the primary/trans? Thx

I checked mine the other day because I noticed it was acting up... I pulled the plug to my clutch lever and it still wouldn't start, so that plug will need jumped to bypass the clutch lever safety switch.

I've used either amsoil or the actual HD oil since I got mine. Dont notice a big difference between the two.

5,000 mile intervals for engine oil/fiter and primary/trans, I always use Mobil 1 15/50 everywhere with good results.

my clutch switch allows the motor to turn over, but not start. Just being in neutral does not allow either. so I had to jump the kickstand. Any idea what the primary fault is?

I see from your profile that you have an X1.
If my bike is just barely able to turn over due to a weak battery, it will squirt gas but not pop ignition.
It can foul the plugs like that.

I would check for spark with a good battery first.

Another thing that turns up sometimes is the fusebox connectors can corrode.
Know how the fusebox is all warm dry and cozy under the seat?
That's just the top!
The connectors and wires are all out in the open under there.

WD40 and re-seat everything one thing at a time will fix it most often. If you live in the hell-hole of New England, the salt messes it up pretty often.

Will clean up the fuse box. In this case, though, it seems the clutch switch is allowing cranking but not ignition. the sidestand is allowing both, and the neutral switch is allowing neither. ECM issue?

In the fuse box, there are two relays and two diodes. Reseating these may solve your spooky issues.

The first time I had a no-start, I swapped the two relays and it just fixed it.
Relays weren't bad. Just bad contact in fusebox.
