I bought the ‘02 X1W that was advertised here a while back. It hadn’t run in around two years, but I wanted one, it looked great, and the price was right.

It took a while, thanks to some still broken ribs, but I put a new fuel pump in it, cleaned the injectors, and did a TPS reset.

It is a true sweetheart of a bike! I am genuinely in love with this machine!
I had assumed it would run, ride, and handle much like my ‘99 S3T. Wrong. The difference is amazing. It feels so much more refined, it’s unbelievable.

Anyone have any knowledge or thoughts on what changed between those models that would make such a noticeable difference?

Incidentally, the White Lightning (X1W) has 6,000 more miles on it than the S3T. Both are low mileage bikes.

Congrats. Lot's of X1 folks here with plenty of info to share, but looking at your profile, you already know this.

Good luck!

The steering angle is different I think.
Also, they altered the ratio of the second gear around 2000.
The new primary shoe came out 2001 along with the new shifter without the "boomarang"

It's possible the previous owner did something not mentioned or known or visible to the eye, that could make it perform perceptibly better. Like when I put in the emulator kit & springs on my M2 front fork; it felt like a different bike, even if you can't see any difference.

I'm pretty sure your X1W has a lighter flywheel. They certainly seem to rev much faster.

There were lots of changes during the four years of DDFI models.
1999 and early 2000 models had a slightly lighter flywheel assembly (“low inertia”) which returned (mid 2000) to the previously used 21.25 lb assembly which was slightly heavier.
There were several map changes between the first 1999 and the last 2002 software (maybe six? versions). Heat management strategies, AFV limitations, cold start behavior, (and others) were improved. Temp sensors, O2 sensors, vehicle speed sensors were also upgraded during those years. The temp sensor location was moved from the fin pack to the “chimney”, to provide more consistent and accurate output.
Harness routing was improved (from under the rear tie-bar to over the tie-bar) and allowing more slack in the injector area, better crimping, cleaner grounds and others... were also implemented.
Corrections were made to the manifold width, and improved accuracy in the static timing process, at the engine plant, made a big improvement in running behavior.
Mechanical improvements; adding a remote idle adjustment cable, new oil pump (higher return rate, less carryover), new primary shoe, new crank seal, new rocker gaskets, improved cam chest oiling (new cam cover and gasket), quieter high contact cam sets, piston coatings, and (I think) new cylinder casting processes (reduced liner separation) were implemented.
There were subtle chassis and body changes to ease assembly and reduce warranty - and there were more changes but I’d have to start looking things up to be certain when they occurred.
The 2002 fuel injected models were well sorted out and behaved and performed very well - especially compared to the very early models.

Another question for the experts.

I’ve seen some X1Ws with blue pipes and some with silver.
Were they changed in production or post sale?

TIA
John

Blue pipes are X1W, 2002 model year only.

FWIW, I aired up the tires on the S3 this afternoon, and took it for a short ride.
It needs the TPS reset, but runs acceptably at low rpm when warmed up.

At higher rpm, the race kit says Hi there, let me take over, and it hauls butt.

I still say the X1W is an all-around nicer ride, but the S3T will probably kick it’s butt.
Might just have to find out one of these days.
