Hello all, I am looking for a rebuild kit for my rear master cylinder. Is there such a thing? If not is there a replacement master cylinder that I can use?
Thanks in advance.

The 97 rebuild kit isn't listed in the parts book but it should be the same as the 98 rear master cylinder which is listed, and is the same rebuild kit for all the newer bikes as well which is part number H0040.F, ALL Harley Dealers can order buell parts now although you may probably still get the typical cold shoulder from them. Price is $16.31 before tax.

St. Paul HD actually has it listed below MSRP at $15.50 but not sure what they charge for shipping.

Are you sure the 97 & 98 S1 used the same rear brakes?
97 & 98 S3/S3T do not use the same rear brake. On the 1997, one of the rear brake pads has a sheet metal clip on it. the 1998 S3 uses a pin to hold both brake pads in place.
Can they possibly use the same rebuild kit? That would be most excellent for my spares collection.

Thanks for all the responses. I sent an email to St Paul HD as buelligan suggested and this was his response "Unfortunately I do not have those parts, they are obsolete and no dealers have them in stock. I have been looking for aftermarket alternatives but as of right now I do not have anything. The tube frame Buells are hard to shop for, the early ones being the hardest of all." Now what? I need the seals for the rear caliper too... Does anybody have a suggestion for a 1997 replacement master cylinder?

Canyon_biker,
Simple answer is to buy a used rear brake with bracket from a 1998-2000 Buell S1/S3/S3T/S1W. It will fit, and parts are more readily available.
Rear brake calipers with brackets are not that expensive on Ebay nor badweb.
Ebay prices range from $35 - $100;

When I get home tonight I will search my spares and see what I can find.

Thanks 89rs1200, That would be awesome if you have something. I would like to avoid Flea-Bay if possible.

Canyon_biker,
Thought I had a rebuild kit, but I do not.
Searched through my resources and this is all I could find. Best bet is to get the 1998-2000 rear caliper as there are rebuild kits for those.

JP Cycle has a kit which they state will work for all Buell models. Slim chance, but for $7.99 may be worth a try. Let us know if you get it;

Thanks for looking and thanks for the useful information. I'll follow up and see what I come up with. Hopefully it will be something that will work and maybe help someone else too.

Bah, I just noticed you were talking about the MC and the stuff I posted is for the caliper. My mistake. If you find the MC parts post it here. I could definitely use a rebuild on mine.

I seem to remember hearing that the 98+ tubers use the same rear brake as the XBs. Can anyone confirm if that's correct? I know the mounting brackets are different, but itd be nice to know if the rear brake setup from an XB would work if you bought the correct mounting bracket.

The master cylinder on the 98 and up tubers is the same as the xb's except the linkage from the mc to the brake lever varies between the models. Not sure on the S3 but the M2 and X1 have different length rods with the same ball joint end. The XB uses the same style rod but with a different pin and clip style end. Rebuild kit is the same 1/2" Nissin kit still available at Harley. Doin a little more research I believe the 97 S1 is just a 13mm Brembo, even though Harley no longer carries them nor makes a rebuild kit for anything Brembo, not even the current Big twin touring bike Brembo calipers. Theoretically you should be able to find a rebuild kit on ebay or aftermarket for the 13mm Brembo Master Cylinder that should work, if not get a brand new one from Gotham Cycles.

Okay, here's my dilemma, when I do a search for a 13mm brembo rear master cylinder rebuild kit the parts list that comes up do not look like the innards of my m.c. However, the parts that come up for the 11mm rear m.c. look more closely like mine. I am going to try and attach a few photos. My question is: could mine be an 11mm rear? I tried to measure across the inside of the cylinder and it looks like it measures 13. It's not 11 for sure. Could it be 1/2 inch? 11mm rebuild kit image.

Could try emailing them and make sure the image posted is of the actual kit and not just a generic picture or mispictured. I don't think Brembo made Inch sizings, everything I've seen has been metric. I saw 13mm Brembo listed on twin motorcycles site and read somewhere else that it was a brembo, so I'm not 100% positive that it is a 13mm. I'm sure you've checked but the housing may have model numbers or bore size stampings? The Nissin on the newer ones has 1/2 cast into them because they are 1/2" bore. Long shot but maybe there is a size or something stamped under some road grime.

When I was looking around tryin to find a rebuild kit for my front 5/8" MC, the pictures online didn't always match what you were actually getting. I'd try checking a few sites and a few listings on ebay to see if the same pictures are used consistently or if people are just using whatever pictures they have.

If buying a new one buy a hidden caliper kit with a new brembo

Ken, is the mounting pattern on that brembo different than the nissin calipers normally on XBs? With all the rebuild kit hassle, I'm debating just buying an XB setup and trying to make it work on my S1. I see about the MC above, still not 100% sure if they used the same rear calipers.

Yes they are completely different. Purpony sells a bracket to do the hidden brembo on a tuber. Might be only with xb wheel conversion though not sure. I have a hidden xb mount and brembo in my garage if you want to see the difference

Finally got the rear master cylinder worked out. I replaced the 13mm Brembo rear master cylinder with an 11mm Brembo from Gotham Cycle. https://www.gothamcycles.com/Bodyworkhtml/ducati-r ear-brake-master--11mm-bore-gold-straight-through. html
They had a 13mm available but no rebuilding kit for it so I chose the 11mm. They have kits for those. You do need to replace the bent banjo fitting for a straight on and it’s a little tight getting the brake fluid hose on the m.c. Luckily you can turn the nipple a little to allow it. I found this great video on how to reverse bleed your brakes which helped a novice like me. https://youtu.be/jiWnc4fNGCo
Still took a long time as I didn’t tighten the banjo nut enough and air kept leaking in. Rookie mistake but I figured it out. I took the Buell for a little ride up Mulholland drive and the brake worked fine. It is slightly better than stock set up. But not much. You can lock up the rear but you have to mean it.
Thanks everyone for all you help. I hope this info helps someone else .
