In need of a new rear shock for the S1W, this one has come up, its the old exposed style spring model, were these the ones that were recalled? Is it safe? Straight swap out for my all silver one on the bike?

Info appreciated : )

There is a picture somewhere in Badweb of recalled shocks. I can't find it again. The first is an exposed spring shock described as 95-98 WP (all recalled) 16.5" eye to eye.

I found the pic but badweb won’t let me upload the pic from my iPad because it’s too large...

Here’s a link

To newer your question:

Is it safe? Probably. But to me, probably isn’t good enough when something could kill you... .not to mention, If you buy an old WP shock, you’ll likely need to spend hundreds to rebuild it. Same with a used Penske. Do yourself a favor and buy a brand new shock from twin motorcycles for under $600. I’ve got two and I love them.

I would recommend this also.

If you find one cheap, grab it and hang on to it as a collectors piece. Then go purchase a new unit from Twin Motorcycles and ride worry free, knowing the WP is safely at home where it can kill no one. ; )

I’ve got a gold valved racetech rebuilt wp on my S1W. It is nice! Cost me about $600 to acquire it, powder coat the spring and rebuild with gold valve. I had the stock wp rebuilt by racetech on my s2, i probably have $350 in it without the gold valving. It has a heavier (threaded on?) front eye and billet spring plates. They made 3 styles of WP. The early with heavier eye, billet spring plates - came on S2s an early S1s. A “short spring” with stamped plates and “ling spring” with stamped plates, both have a suspect welded on front eye. The short springs were on S1/S1W from what I can tell. The M2 had a WP without the reservoir. I had a post going about this and I read all the posts I could find on badweb. The consensus was they were recalled and that’s probably reason enough not to run one. However, there were no confirmed crashes from front eye failure that I could find outside of Buell race team issues. Court had a showa? separate and put the rear tire up through the fender once. The 16in showa was recalled or SRP kitted in certain applications. Both are equally dangerous IMO. Aftermarket or the 14in are your options for safety. The 14in showa will need periodic rebuilds, the seals dry out easily.

I'm not gonna run one, there is one for sale cheap though, 60 bucks, worth grabbing for a collectors piece (will probably end up in the same box as all my broken headers that I was gonna get around to welding up one day lol)
