Purchasing an X1 with no keys, will likely be a parts bike but want to power it up to see mileage and if it runs. Pretty complete, has the RH controls to start but no keys. Once I disconnect the main harness from the ignition switch, can I jumper over to power it up so I can get it started ? Which wires do I jump across? Or is there anther way ? Or does someone have an X1 ignition switch and key they can give me a good deal on ? Thanks, Rick |

My bikes are older but I don't think anything has changed. The ignition switch has either two or three wires which lead to a connector. Just splice both or all wires together and plug the connector back in. If three wires, one is live, one is ignition but no lights, and the last is everything on. hence splicing them all together. They may have reverted to two wires and omitted the ability to run without lights. I keep the spliced connector with me always in the event of ignition switch failure or losing my keys. |

One is power, one is taillight circuit, and one is engine power. You can just lay a hunk of large solder across all three pins and put the connector back together. Harley has gone back to flat keys, and they can sell you a switch that will fit in your dash. I got two keyed alike so I only have to carry one key for both bikes. You will have to solder your old connector onto the new switch. |

I remember years ago Kryptonite locks started replacing all of their lock with cylinder keys for ones with normal keys, because someone found out you could open them with a 5 cent big pen. Before you start cutting and soldering parts on a bike you're just gonna part anyway, you could always try jamming one in there and wiggling it around and see if it works. https://www.wired.com/2004/09/twist-a-pen-open-a-l ock/ |
