Hey guys,
I have an '01 M2. The brake light pig tail was starting to crap out (brake light would blink from the vibration) so I cut it off and made my own terminations using spade connectors (same thing that's molded into the rubber pigtail). After I was done I went to plug them to the brake light and shorted 2 of them together with the key on -_- now I don't have brake lights, signals, odometer, or speedometer. I checked the fuses and they're all fine. The bike starts and runs, any ideas?

I would check the relays. You may have blown one. If the lights, gauges and signals are all out, they all run through the same relay (See attached).

If it's the relay, when you swap them out, you should get lowlights and everything back, but it won't start.

Ok, I switched them and the bike still starts and I still don't have lights. I'm studying the wiring diagram now trying to get acquainted with it. I may break out the multimeter, start at the fuse block, and see where I lose voltage.
It's worth mentioning the headlight/high beam and tach still work.

Ok, if the headlights and instruments still work, it's not the relay or the instruments or lights fuses.

You sure the accessories fuse is still good?

Swapped another one in? You sure you've got the connectors where they should be?

I started at the fuse block and almost immediately found the problem. I removed all the fuses and many of the terminations in the fuse block are pretty nasty. It's a combo of oil, dirt, and corrosion. I cleaned up the accessory leads and attached them to the fuse out of the block, turned the key, and had accessories again. I'm gonna go through the entire block and clean out the 18 years of gunk so hopefully this won't happen again for a while. I appreciate the help and the wiring diagram!

Go to your local music store and get some Deoxit D5. It will clean terminals, deoxidize and protect. Another good lubricant/deoxidizer is ACF-50.

Now that problem's solved can I hijack the thread to ask Ft_bstrd about that M2 picture?

Nice bike, not a typical M2, to say the least. Can I ask what kind of shifter is that? Very tidy install.

Jayvee,

It's a Billit2Race shifter. Aren't very many around.

If you are interested Purpony here on Badweb (Mark Cranklick) can cut you one.

Otherwise, he can also do a Banke version that is also trick.

Banana shifters suck.

That's a funny plate. I drove an M60 tank back when we had a peacetime army, and got to shoot our real Ma Deuce a few times. Cleaned it a whole lot more often than I got to shoot it, luckily.

Jayvee, it was too easy a name to pass up as a tag.

When Ma Deuce speaks, everyone listens.
