When I faced this situation, I decided to 'bite the bullet' and went aftermarket. I looked for a Penske on Ebay, and sent it for an inspection/rebuild before installing it. Expensive, but quality is quality. Hope this helps, Dave |

I did the same.....I scored a used Penske. Its ok as is, but it was built for a 170lb rider and I'm about 230lb. I plan to send it in next winter to be rebuilt and get the proper spring put on it for my weight |

i have two shocks from twin motorcycles and you cannot beat them for the price. Costs about $600 shipped from the netherlands. https://www.twinmotorcycles.nl/webshop/artikel.asp ?mc=1&aid=4323 |

I had a penske bought used sent to penske for a rebuild. The shock tubes wear through. Takes about 20k miles I think. The plastic slider ring his harder and rubs through the aluminum body. They told me that was due to the action of the Buell shock and they had seen a couple wear completely through. Bad design IMO. Mine was worn bad and had to buy a new shock tube so, I had them shorten it to 14in and put on new 14” pull rods. Cost about $400 to have all that done and I had paid $400 for the shock. I knew it would wear through again and sold it. I’ll be going with twin most likely. But I really like the looks of the Ohlins. Works have a good rep but they aren’t around anymore. Racetech will rebuild them if you find a used one. None of the other brands seem to wear the shock tube. Just my observations. Racetech will rebuild your stock shock for $200 plus shipping to/from. I had them rebuild and gold valve a WP ran me $375 (I know a touchy subject with a recall shock) and it is much better than the Showa on my S1W. They rebuilt the WP on my S2 for $250 without gold valving. (Message edited by Williamscottrobertson on February 02, 2019) |

Another good option is Works Performance (now Worx, I think?). I believe theirs are user-rebuildable but haven't had to rebuild mine yet. Have a Penske on my S1W and love it, one rebuild so far (the tube), outstanding customer service. Works may end up with some parts-supply issues but again, I've never had to rebuild mine and have had it on my S2 since '06? '07? It'll likely end up on my S3 Defender now, since Bambi totalled my S2 back in May. But either one is absolutely GLORIOUS compared to stock (which was no slouch to start with). |
