Thanks for all the help with the oil change questions.

Here is a sister thread... For the transmission fluid change the manual says to put on rear stand and remove muffler before draining. And there is a diagram showing a reference line for fluid fill level.

Can I get by without a rear stand by adding 1 quart even per the manual? Or do I need to use the rear stand and reference line to get the level right?

Any insight on the procedure would be helpful because I don’t have a rear stand. I can see that I’ll have to remove the muffler to access drain plug.

28 oz will do it, a quart is too much and may spew out the trans vent.Fluid should just touch bottom of the clutch basket.

You should be able to wiggle the drain plug out without removing the muffler. It’s tricky, but not impossible.

So for the fluid just touching the bottom of the clutch basket does it matter if the bike is leaned on the kick stand or up on the rear stand? In my mind the reference file line would change depending on bike orientation.

There is about an inch of clearance between drain plug and muffler, how do you keep the oil from draining right into the muffler if you leave it on?

You don’t : ). But you can wrap the muffler in plastic wrap or aluminum foil. I have a flexible oil director funnel thingy that works well. Unfortunately I don’t remember where I bought it or what it’s called.

The exhaust systems on these bikes have a tendency to rattle themselves to death if improperly attached and not tightened in the correct sequence. Best not to remove it if you don’t have to.

I have new headers I want to install as well, maybe I’ll combine the jobs so I only have to remove muffler once.

Or maybe I’ll google “flexible oil director funnel thingy” and see what I can find.

On my X-1, I put a section of rebar through the rear axle and prop the ends up on frame stands. Keeps the bike level, and provides a fairly stable work platform.

I was able to wiggle the plug out of the motor to change the trans fluid, and yeah, it makes a mess. When other, later maintainance made it necessary to remove the muffler, I took a ball peen hammer and added a 'clearance' dimple to the muffler to ease plug removal.

Hope this helps, Dave

Yes, that helps, I’ll look at the feasibility of that on my bike as I have automotive jack stands. I’m not opposed to buying a rear stand if it’ll be useful for other projects, but I can’t think that far ahead.

A rear stand is beyond useful to have. You can get cheap ones from harbor freight for $25, and bulletproof stands from pitbull that'll last you the rest of your life for $125ish. The harbor freight one is fine for random work like oil changes, but I didn't trust the one I had for parking my bike long term. I also have one I picked up from Cyclegear for I think about $55 that's pretty decent for the money, plus the handle retracts so you're not tripping over it in the garage.

For stability, if a bike doesn't have spools on the swingarm I usually always just stick a bar through the axle and lift it that way. It's a lot more sturdy assuming you don't have to pull off the rear wheel, which you can't do with a bar through the axle. I have a thread on here somewhere showing how I've put spools on both the steel and aluminum swingarms, if you really want to get the best out of your stand.

If I remember right... you can pull off that cover over the clutch with the bike on the sidestand without anything leaking out(assuming it's not overfilled). Drain the oil, pull the inspection cover off, dump in the new quart, then just stand the bike upright and take a look to make sure the oil is where it should be. You can put a piece of wood under the sidestand to keep it more upright, just don't use something too thick and let it fall over on it's right side.

The only downside to doing it without a rear stand(or a metal bar and jack stands) is that the bike leans to the left, so you're going to have to get down on the ground and work a little harder to get to the drain plug, and I don't know if all of the oil will drain out properly if the bike isn't completely horizontal. Some of it may pool on the left side of the primary.

In general, I always just use aluminum foil for those things. Make sure you put a lip on each side so the oil doesn't just run over the edge, and be careful that you don't rip it with the wrench or head of the bolt.

Thanks! I was about to search for rear stand threads, so I’ll be sure to find the one you mentioned.

I’m leaning towards getting a rear stand, and removing muffler for primary refill and new header installation at same time.

Good to have all the tips for changing lube without removing muffler and without rear stand in case I go that route.

Whoa that thing looks awesome, I’m ordering one now. I was totally thinking about making something like that, but less flexible, from a binder cover or something.

Great find, maybe the muffler can stay on

Well if Jeff is gonna be doing research, I can't let him leave me looking like the lazy one. Here's the thread I mentioned:

I've also heard a lot of good things about T-rex stands. Not AS good as pitbull, but a little cheaper and very good quality.

I’m just down in The Woodlands/North Spring, if you need a hand with anything.

FYI-
If you use the rod thru the bolt method, make sure your lift adapters are tight.
don't ask me how I know.
a set of venom lifts can be had for 100. this comes with front and rear with the triple attachment. Ive mine for 2 yrs and have had no issues. I did mod the rear to make it wider to accept the s1 rod/axle method which made it easier but I typically just use the swingarm lift for the rear.

Hootowl, be careful what you offer... I’ll probably need help with EVERYthing.

So it sounds like I’ll be looking for a rear lift with adapters for both swing arm and axle/rod lifting because I may want to try both.

I need to see all this in person, maybe a trip to Cycle Gear on lunch break today.

https://www.cyclegear.com/accessories/trackside-re ar-paddock-stand

This is the one I have from cyclegear. Looks like the price has gone up slightly since I bought mine, but it's still a solid stand. Don't let the sale price fool you and think you need to rush. If you're familiar with cycle gear, you know they're ALWAYS on sale and that's the normal price. It's not AS sturdy as the pitbull, but it's the same basic design with both types of mounts, and I don't have any second thoughts about leaving my bike parked on it for long periods of time. I always park my bike on the rear stand when I'm at home. I had a sidestand bolt snap on my supermoto. I just laughed, picked it up, and used a chunk of 2x4 in it's place until I got a replacement for the bolt, but I know I wouldn't find it anywhere near as funny if that happened to the Buell, so I try to leave it on the sidestand as little as possible.

Ha, that’s the same stand I just put in my cart online based on your description earlier in the thread. I’m going to check with the local Cycle Gear to see if they have it in stock so I can get to work this weekend.

You can see it put to use in one of the pictures I posted in the "End of my tube frame days" thread
