So I’ll be changing the oil myself for the first time on a 98 S1 and I need a little help.

I’ve read the manual and searched some threads here so I think I’m good on the type and amount of oil I’ll need.

What I need help with is the oil filter. I can’t find any info.

Anyone have a website and part number I can use to order a new filter?

Should I just go to the HD dealer for parts? Autozone?

Will I need the filter wrench referenced in the manual? Will a different wrench work? Or can I unscrew/screw by hand?

Thank you

Most engine parts can be had by shopping at your local HD shop. Hopefully you have a guy at the counter that appreciates Buell. Kinda makes life easier.
My 96 s1 parts catalog lists filter number at 63805-80A
Pretty sure its the same for the 98.
I imagine you could cross-reference that and find its twin at autozone, though ive never done this.
As far as a wrench, depends on how tight it is as to how easily it comes off. Ive never used a wrench to install one... just snug it up good with your hand and it dont hurt to check it periodically.

H-D part number for a 1998 S1 oil filter is 63805-80A, (or the superseded equivalent).

You can pick up the filter wrench at the auto parts store, too. Only 100 INCH pounds so snug but not stupidly tight.

Wix 51215 at your auto parts store.

Great guys thanks. I was able to easily find both the part numbers you gave. And I’ll give it a go by hand first. Thanks again.

It should be the same filter a sportster uses, so any HD shop should have one that fits, and most auto parts stores will as well.

They tend to be harder to get off than they were to get on, but nothing some big adjusting pliers can't take care of. No real need to but a special wrench for it. Some of the pumps have a built in bolt head shape attached to the end, which is very nice for being able to stick a normal wrench or socket on it to twist it off. I'm sure that's also encouraged quite a few people to torque them on way too tight and strip them too though.

It'll start to dump oil all over your oil pressure sensor when you unscrew it, so make yourself a little funnel out of aluminum foil to redirect the oil. I've seen some people on here say they poke a hole in the bottom of the end of the filter to let the oil drain out before they unscrew it.

LOL. I just let it pour all over the place into the bucket and then blast it with brake clean.

I was able to loosen by hand last night. And I ordered a new K&N filter and two quarts of Mobil1 on Amazon. I’ll rig up a funnel when the new filter arrives. Thanks for the help, all.

Don't forget a quart for the primary. I usually just grab 4 in case I need a little extra to top off the oil tank.

Same oil for the engine and primary? I was about to shop for “sport-trans fluid” per the manual.

Some people dump oil in there. I put sport-trans in mine just to be safe. Just wanted to make sure you knew there was a 2nd spot that needed changed.

Also worth noting, when you fill your oil tank, make sure the oil sits between the bottom and midway mark on the dipstick. If you fill it closer to the "full" line, they're more likely to spew a little oil until it gets to the level it likes.

Remember to run the engine for a minute or two before you drain the oil to pump everything below the crankshaft up into the oil tank.

Ok, I’m planning on using Bel Ray Sport Transmission Fluid, says it 85W and good for Sportsters.

And I’ll run the engine a bit before fluid change.

The K&Ns have been known to fail at the nut so do not use that nut to tighten it.

And if your "spew a little oil" is anything like mine, it looks like a hell of a lot and ends up all over the rear tire. Enough so that I bought a used fender to install until I figured it out. It took me a few tries to get it right, but on my S1 I never go above maybe 1/3 of the way up the dipstick when hot. That keeps things happy and the oil in the tank

Ok thanks for the tips on the fill level, sounds like it’ll be a bit less than 2 qts

Idk, I’d stick with motor oil in the primary. Heavier gear oils are known to kill the generator. K&N oil filters are junk. Stick to Wix (they make oem filters), Napa (which is usually wix), or hi-flo if you want the nut.

I run the Walmart synth 20-50 v-twin oil in everything. $5/qt.

I already pulled the trigger on the K&N but thanks for the tip, I’ll keep it in mind for next time.

I work within the ExxonMobil corporation so I’m brand loyal to Mobil1 even if it puts a bigger dent in the bank account.

Mobil makes a filter for your bike.
https://mobiloil.com/en/oil-filters/motorcycle-oil -filters

FWIW, as long as you don't overfill the primary you can use Mobil 1 15W50 in there. Do NOT use Mobil's Gear Oil as it will eat the stator due to sulfur content.

The PAO in Mobil1 might just come from a different company though. ; )

POA... I can live with, I don’t work in chemicals.

Yep, thanks, I saw the Mobil1 filter after I ordered the K&N.

I’ll probably stick with the same oil for engine and primary to keep it simple since the consensus seems to support that.

If it helps, HD says to use 20/50 in engine and primary now.

"If it helps, HD says to use 20/50 in engine and primary now."

as in our bikes? from 20 yrs ago? what if I already used sport trans in my primary? I'm sure not all of it will come out during a change, the clutch plates/discs would still be coated in this. how does it mix?
i ask because i just installed a new clutch and am on my first fill with sport trans.

The current sportster engine is essentially the same as it was in 1995. It’s air and oil cooled now, and has been refined a bit, thanks to Buell, but nothing in the transmission changed that would have required a different fluid. Sportrans is essentially hydraulic fluid. After years of poo pooing synthetic oil, harley branded their own and said to use it in the transmission. You can absolutely still use sportrans. But synthetic 20/50 is readily available, and is specified by the manufacturer. Be aware that “synthetic” in the US doesn’t necessarily mean that it is synthetic, thanks to an idiotic lawsuit and and idiot judge. But mobil1 is fully synthetic, as is amsoil.

I have yet to try amsoil. But ive heard nothing but good about it.
Amsoil full synthetic 20/50 in motor and primary?
I kinda want to start getting the good(er) stuff as i just installed a 1275 kit with some headwork (thanks dan/aaron) and a new clutch. After the break-in period, i think ill go this route. Ill be ok switching to synthetic after using conventional?
Sorry to hi-jack your thread OP : )

Switching won't hurt anything.
I've used regular old Mobil 1 15W50 from Wally World since 2003 in Buells with no issues.

No worries, good stuff here, and I’m learning. Seems like a good stock of 20/50 is all I’ll need.

Used since 1998 in my 3 Buells 250,000 miles. Mobile is the oldest oil company in the World.
