So I have an ever so slow oil leak out of the primary adjuster screw. Does this nut go nylon side up (so it looks like the nut is upside down) or down like mine here? There’s some conflicting info on the XL forum. Supposedly flipping the nut over nylon side up stops the leaks and is correct.

The nut is on correctly. The nut seal is on the end. Some of the bike had a sealing washer between the nut and the primary. Most of the time replacing the nut will fix the leak.

I'll always default to Lance's knowledge over mine, but will point out that the instruction sheet that came with my new primary tensioner said that the nylon side went against the primary cover(was just looking at the instructions last week after a different primary tensioner question was posted last week). I don't think the nylon is there as much for the sake of the nut spinning loose, as much as it's meant to seal the hole. A sealing washer would probably do the same, but no harm in flipping the nut over first. It's the quick and free option.

I’ve always put those on with the nylon against the case as well to provide a seal at the surface.... seemed intuitive..... but I’ve been known to overt-think the obvious as well so all of mine could be upside down I suppose.....

The nylon is there to stop the nut from loosening and that pic is correct. Turning it around may or may not help, but I've never seen a nylock nut used that way.

The top of the nut that captures the nylon is super thin and will just crush against the case. IT WAS NEVER MEANT TO SEAL ANYTHING.

If you want to stop a small leak, put a gasket under the nut, against the case, like the factory did.: )

And don't overtighten it. You can pull the threads out of the primary cover, causing you to wonder why your damn chain tension won't stay where you put it.

DAMHIK.

You tha man maiden. When all else fails, READ lol

On the XL forum, they say the nylon was for leak prevention, as it was a jam/stop nut for the adjuster. Doesn’t need nylock once it’s tight against the cover.

I put the nut on backwards once and when I reversed it my leak stopped.

The picture seems incorrect to me, but once I read the instruction I reversed it and it works fine.

BTW: Mine did NOT have a washer under it either and I am positive it was from the factory like that as the first time I removed it was when the original tensioner foot detonated on me.

Well, learn something new every day! : ) It sure looks like a regular 'Nylock' locking nut, I wonder if it's special in some way (like the crown that holds the nylon is shorter or crushable) in order to be used backwards like that, or it's just a trick that happens to work? Never seen that before, on any bike, but if it works... win!

FYI, I have used oil pan drain plug gaskets at that spot to stop a weeping leak before. Works perfectly.

It has to be different. A regular lock not is not threaded in the nylon section. You can't really thread them on backwards. Maybe after the threads have been cut from being wrenched on you could. These lock nuts must have the threads cut already.

So the diagram in the Maintenance Manual shows nylon side up. The photo shows nylon side down. Haha!
