Quick question. Don't all S2 bikes have black engines with machined fins?

Looking at a bike and he says they're stock heads that have been Ported but theyre raw aluminum like an s1 head

Thanks

If he had the heads off it to port them maybe he had them bead blasted to clean them up and never bothered to repaint them black to match ???

true but i would see flat machined fin area... none there. i guess i just asked too many questions?

so he put in a 1250cc kit and "ported" heads on it. i thought he took off the original heads and jugs to keep for another s2 since they were low mile units. makes sense. but he said thats what came on the bike. so who knows but at 16k miles i dont think it should of had anything else on it.

not sure who totally sand blasts heads to rebuild them. especially since youd think as a s2 youd want the engine to match original style.

I've got one I've toyed with getting rid of but the motor is worth a couple times what S2s have been selling for.

Cheaper to keep some of the old S2s as paperweights

...or drive them through a deer and MAKE it a paperweight...

Those heads pictured almost look like XB heads, and that's not a stock front mount which would support a head-change. My S2 had (well, the engine still does) all-black (no highlighting) thunderstorm heads on it, simply because I wanted a performance bump.

Perhaps it's a phrasing issue. "Why aren't the stock heads on it?", versus "have you done performance work to the motor?".

so current owner whos had it since near new with low miles said it came that way. the heads pictured are the heads that came on the bike.

he told me the engine has been built. i thought he used lightning or thunderstorm heads. he said no. he used the stock heads that came on that bike.

i told him i was pretty sure all s2 bikes came with black jugs/heads with machined fins. he stopped all communication after that point.

so not sure if i just pissed him off asking questions.

to phrase what he said:

"S&S wheels/knifed
S&S rods/lightened
Wheels and rods balanced
Millennium Tech barrels/1250cc
JP pistons 9.5:1
Branch Heads and intake/ flowed
Mikuni 44 flat slide
Factory race header/White Bros. pipe
Compu-fire ignition"

Branch generally does a core program. The heads you send in - unless you specifically request it - are not always the heads you get back. We also had customers send heads to be machined, and during the process the heads would get hot-tank-cleaned which would remove the black. Again - unless specifically requested, they may or may not have re-blacked them.

If they were even the same heads that were sent in.

"my head had a nick on this fin, now it's gone". Well...that's because you now have "a" head, not "your" old head.

Not that it matters much at this point, but the heads were likely exchanged as Ratbuell describes. They could be "Lightning" heads which were either as-cast finish or powdercoated silver (later version). They're not XB because of the subtle casting difference on XB fins - in front of and to the rear of the pushrods.

Ok well I asked twice and got the same answer twice just trying to clearify
so I probably pissed him off asking

I think that you were less than diplomatic in asking if he kept the "nicer looking stock S2 heads for another bike." Especially after he told you he used the stock heads. Sounds like a nice motor. As others have said, Branch typically does core swap, so he may have been mistaken himself as to what was on it if he thought they had re-worked the heads he sent in as core replacement.
